I know this hasn't been updated in a while, but I figured a way how to fix it. That problem has occurred to me heaps of times.
When the carpool comes, change the sim into their career outfit, then click go to work and it works! Sorry if this came really late, but I just found this out.  :D
Also, this glitch can also happen to male sims, not just female.

The above worked for me when my Sim was at level 1, but not when she moved up. I think the career outfit was the problem, though.

This totally worked, it was sad to have to get ride of the awesome outfit I picked out and use the sometimes questionable one the game picks but I no longer have the not going to work problem. Forums are awesome!  :D

Do you mean the Sim's house, or the lot where the workplace is found?
Because, if you mean house, yes that a possibility, but then the sim would wave it's arm in the air, saying somethings in the way.
But, it happened to me the first time when my sim was playing for tips near the Diner, she couldn't go to work.
So, this specific problem where the icon just disappears, would not occur with locked doors to blame.

This is a known bug with the new customizable career outfits. You can fix it by going to the dresser and selecting "Plan an Outfit" and adding an outfit to the career category.

I changed my work clothes back to Sims 3 basic clothes and took all my accessories (jewelry etc...) and hairstyle. It worked after those things.

Changing his outfit didn't work for me but unlocking the front door did. It had been set to lock to everyone but household. When I changed it to unlock he went through the door without opening it but he did go to work.

Sometimes I queue up five or six "go to work" commands, especially if the Sim is running late.  That way, if they time out on one, they'll just get to the next command and still go to work.  It helps when they're reluctant.  Good luck.
