2014 World Ranking
« on: December 11, 2013, 03:43:00 PM »
2014 World Ranking

The World Ranking has two basic components: a Wins component (50%) and a Participation component (50%). The World Ranking I devised for the Sims 3 Tournament is a very simple ranking system, but still an effective measure of player caliber. To receive a World Ranking a player must finish at least three Tournament challenges. So, let me walk everyone through how one's World Ranking is determined.

Each of the 2014 Tournament challenges has a column in my Tournament spreadsheet. Individual cells in the challenge columns are filled with a ratio of how many players a player beat in that challenge in relation to how many could have been beaten. Let’s take a look at Joe Blow and how Joe did in the first 3 events of the season. Let’s say the field size of event #1 is 25 and Joe finished 8th. That means he beat 17 out of a possible 24 players (I don’t count Joe), so Joe’s event #1 cell is =17/24. The 2nd event was larger, 30 players, and Joe did even better and finished 6th. Event #2’s cell is =24/29. Event #3’s participation dropped to 25, but Joe pulled out all the stops and won it. Event #3’s cell is =24/24.

Down the spreadsheet after all the individual challenge columns is the “Sum of Wins” column. This is just the total of all of one’s ratios in each challenge column. So, with the first 3 events in the bag, Joe’s “Sum of Wins” column is 2.537.

Next comes the “# of Events” column which is a simple count function for all challenge columns. Joe has only participated in three 2014 Tournament Challenges so far, so his “# of Events” figure is 3. The “Sum of Wins” is then divided by the “# of Events” for an “Ave of Wins” column:

2.537 / 3 = .845.

Now it’s time to add the weight for the Wins component. The Wins weight for everyone is 50% of final score, so we take .845 X .50 and get .422 That’s Joe’s final Wins component.

The second component is Participation. The participation component has been significantly beefed up for 2014 (50%) in hopes of seeing more players submit scores. Everyone who submits a score in a challenge receives a 10% participation bonus figured into their ranking. So, there’s a 10-event cap at which point a player receives 100% of the Participation component. If someone participates in more than 10 Tournament challenges, then a player’s best finishes will be used to compute the World Ranking.

Okay, so Joe Blow has participated in the first 3 events. His participation bonus is .30 (10% per event). Participation counts for 50% of final score, so we then take .30 X .50 to get Joe’s final Participation component of .15.

Joe’s World Ranking is his final Wins component + his final Participation component:

.422 + .15 = .572

Not surprisingly, last year's World Champion, LenaLJ, is intent on keeping her crown and sits atop of this year's world ranking now that 3 events are in the bag. Grats Lena. And good job to everyone who participated in the first 3 events to earn a world ranking. There are plenty of events to come for this year.

With the closing of Baby Boomer I updated the World Ranking. Lena still clings onto the top spot, but Nutella and _Annika_ are right up there now and are chasing last year's champion. Baby Boomer saw great participation (56 players) — for many it was their 3rd event of the season, so I was able to add quite a few more names to the World Ranking.

The world ranking has been updated with the closing of the Grandmaster challenge. Femke82 leaped from 5th to 2nd place. Nice job.

Yep. It will be an incredibly tight race at the end, Lena. And you're exactly right — because I have weighted participation more this year it changes things slightly.

The World Ranking has been updated with the closing of the Ghost Hunter Bingo event. I am trying to figure out who was paid off to allow me to jump into 3rd place!  ;D But, seriously — Lena and Femke continue to hold onto 1st and 2nd place. With Blackrosea's win, she jumped 2 spots, but she is a prime example of how important participation weight is this year. The GH event was only her 4th event, but she has done really well in her 4 events including a 2nd and 1st. If the ranking were based solely on finish, then she would probably be in the top 5.

With A Portrait of My Hometown now finished I updated the World Ranking. Not surprisingly, the winner of that event, Alexandria_, jumped quite a bit in the ranking. Grats to everyone that moved up and several players had the painting event as their 3rd one this year and were able to join the World Ranking. It's getting to be quite a nice list. :)

The World Ranking has been updated with the closing of the Fortunate Fortnight event. Wow, lots of new players in the World Ranking — I must have added close to 8 new names since this last event was their 3rd. Welcome, and thank you for participating this year! :)

I am very proud of my first place still, but now where we have hit the mark with 10 completed events i cant wait to see if i can keep with.

With the wins counting the half of the score and partipation the other half i can foresee that the leaderboards could end up beign tight.
Ohh im so excited, i love when it gets interesting in the end! :D

Yeah, exactly Lena...now that 10 events are in the bag for those players that have actually finished 10 events it's only going to be their 10 best scores that count from now on. Could be interesting. And yeah I foresee some players getting closer to you because your participation score is now capped.

With the sculpting challenge now over I updated the World Ranking this morning. I think Chare has Lena in her crosshairs and it's going to be quite a close fight by the end of July. 4 players have played in all 11 events to date this year — myself, LenaLJ, mayayeti72, and Femke82. So I was able to drop these 4 players' worst performance since World Ranking is based on your 10 best finishes. Assuming Chare turns in a solid performance for Jimmy Bond, I would then be able to drop her lowest performance since Jimmy Bond would be her 11th event. I am thinking the gap between Lena and Chare will narrow even more at that point.

I had a LONG break from playing Sims in 2013 due to work circumstances and a bit of boredom with the game. I wish I discovered this forum, and the challenges in particular, earlier. They have breathed fresh air into the game for me and I am really enjoying Sims again, finding new ways to play and discovering things I never had a clue existed. Thanks for an awesome forum and for the fun & clever challenges  :)

The final 2014 World Ranking has been posted now that the House Hunters II winner was determined. 69 players earned a World Ranking this year which I am really pleased with. I am proud to announce LenaLJ as this year's World Champion. Lena has been around since day 1 of the Sims 3 challenges and is the only player to pull off a successful defense of a World Championship title. Great job, Lena! And congratulations to runner up, Chare. You made it an exciting and tight race at the end. Both of you ladies will be receiving your prizes soon.

A super big thanks to all participants not only this year but to everyone that has thrown their hat into the ring for these competitions over the last five years.

You should be very proud, Lena. Everyone should step in this thread and give you a tip of the hat. Which reminds me I need to head off to the trophy shop right now and tell them to get your plaque made :). Back to back titles is really impressive. Well done. Chare made it very very interesting and a close fight this year. It would be great if some of the old heavy hitters like Chuckles, Nancy J and drift came back for Sims 4.
