If you have the gem cutter you can cut the gem and then set it outside and put the gem dust outside also.  The dust will grow and become a larg spiral.

I did that this week when playing, cut the gem with my gem cutter and had one group of gem dust.  Put them both out and they both grew.  Took them to the consignment store and got a whole lot more for them, don't remember what the amount was, but it was more than the  amount that showed up. 

The next time I get one I am going to cut it to nothing but gem dust and see what happens.

All the tiberium gem dust will grow into large spire.
