Sims 3 fireflies collection?
« on: March 05, 2012, 05:57:09 AM »
OK, after installing the latest patch, I found that my Sims 3 collection has a new type of insects called fireflies. Does this collection comes from the Showtime expansion pack? Also, the percentage of recipes known had dropped to 66%.

Does anyone else have a clue on this? Does Showtime contain new recipes?

Thanks!

Yes, to both. There's also a new fish, a starfish, I think. The new recipes involve tofu or bananas. Tofu is available at the store, and probably you can pick up a banana seed. I don't know if there is a new gem or metal.

Not sure about the insect, though fireflies would be cool. But I have heard that there are new recipes, a bunch of vegetarian recipes and banana's are the new plant.  On the Showtime post here it has a link to another site which has everything about showtime, including new recipes. According the the second link there are 11 new recipes.

Thanks for the kind reply! Also, I am sure that there are NO new metals or gems with Showtime because before the patch came out, my Sim had already found 100% metals and gems. With the patch, the percentage of gems and metals my Sim collected remained at 100%.

But I have one more question to ask. I installed mods in my game and removed them before applying the patch. Once the patch was applied, I reinstalled the mods with no apparent issues. The question is, should I remove the mods BEFORE installing Showtime or just leave them alone as there are no new patches yet.

I hope Pam would not get angry over this question!

Thanks!

Depending on the Mod creator.  I know twallan's are safe, and he's up to date with patches, which shouldn't interfere with your game.  However its just as easy to remove the mod, load Showtime, wait a few days and load twallan's new mods (the up to date ones) or keep an eye on his website for news, his mods might already be up to date.

As long as there isn't a patch that you'll need with the installation of Showtime that will change the patch level of the game, your mods will be fine.  The game doesn't care if you've got mods installed or not and as long as your patch level remains the same, your mods will not be affected.

I hope Pam would not get angry over this question!

There's nothing to get angry over.  Discussing mods are no longer against the rules.  Although, this is a bit off-topic.

Sorry they are a little dark.   Fireflies only come out at night and they seem to share spawners with butterflies.   I found this guy at the exact same spot that I had caught a mission butterfly a few hours earlier.  There are various fireflies so they may be included with the other spawners now.  Just have to remember to look at night.

Oh and to catch one you swat at them with a jar like Link does in later Zelda games.

Edit: I did a test where I put butterfly spawners on a lot.   Fireflies did spawn but they only spawn in the night hours and they disappear by morning.  I'm going to try this one more time in another city to see if it will work everywhere.

Sorry for the double post but I wanted to make sure Blanchflower saw this.

The new game code as long as you patched up is that Butterflies disappear at night now.   In places where butterflies spawn, you can find fireflies.  I started a new game in  AP without placing any spawners and I found fourteen fireflies over the course of two nights.   A collection helper would probably go a long way to helping you find them but like I said they are only available at night.

Edit:   I reached 100% for my firefly collection with 8 fireflies but it doesn't show as complete in my Collection Skill Journal.  Here is a picture of all 8 and their names plus quality.  I put them by monetary value but I don't know the ranges.   Fireflies do take over all butterfly spawns about 8 pm at night and disappear between 4 and 6 am.  Butterflies start to appear again around 7 or 8 AM and disappear around 6 PM.

OK, thanks for the kind reply. This is a big help! I am seeing this thread now which I had forgotten! The question is, are you sure there are 8 types of fireflies. It is because when you collected all of 8 of them, the collection journal did not show as 100%, am I right?

I knew I should have taken a picture of the journal.  The journal said I had discovered 100% of them after collecting these 8 types.  However the journal challenge didn't highlight like it was finished.  So either you can discover more than 100% of the fireflies or the skill challenge has the possibility of being broken.

OK, so far, I only managed to capture 2 types of fireflies despite creating spawns of butterflies all over the place in the Pets town. They are Firefly fulvus and Firefly pratinus.

Why is this so?

I didn't have to put Butterfly spawners anywhere but if you look at the list I gave you there are differences in quality.   You can't find a rainbow beetle every day in a game and you're not going to find the pink and purple fireflies every day in a game.   Also, the fireflies only spawn from specific spawners.

Pratinus (green) and Fulvus (Yellow) are the most common of the common.  I was able to get them everywhere including Cat park, Dog park, Billboard across from junkyard, Bedlington lot and horse ranch lot.  These two are most likely the Low 1 spawner

I only found Albus (white) in two spots that I remember. So it's probably Low 2 or Med 1 spawner.
The blue one I only saw once and it was near a fence between town and the junkyard I think it shares a spawn that does the red admiral butterflies.
The orange one was the hardest one to find out of all of them and it's only an uncommon.
I saw pinks and purples near the waterfall and at the end of the road where all the rich houses were.  They seemed to be spawner High 1 or 2.
I think I got the red one in the middle of that field behind the junkyard.  It was the second most rare out of all my searches as I only had 2 of them after a week of hunting and having an entire lot full of spawners.

They are new to the game and they are not something you're going to be able to just collect in one night just like you can't get them all with butterflies.  I spent the day getting butterflies and the night getting fireflies.

OK, so high spawners means rare spawners, right? And medium and low means uncommon and common respectively, right?

I was trying to help you with what spawners to place down.   In my game, under buydebug, the spawners are named high, med, low and epic not common, uncommon, rare and extraordinarily unusual.   As previously mentioned green, white, yellow and orange are common.  Blue and red are uncommon. Pink and Purple are rare.

It just happened to take longer for some of the lower quality to spawn then the longer.

Thanks for the kind reply finally. So to understand correctly, when a low spawner is placed, a common butterfly (or firefly) will spawn, right? When an epic spawner is placed, a rare butterfly (or firefly) will spawn, right?

Is my understanding correct?

Sorry I was sleeping that's why it took me a while to reply.

And for the spawners there are specific ranges of butterflies associated with each one so you can't say only common or uncommon will come from them.   That's why I gave you the spawners several posts back that I expected actually spawned fireflies as well as butterflies.  There are something like 12 butterfly spawners.  The ones that I expect to never show a firefly are the ones with specific names instead of high, low and med.  I want to say that epic probably won't do one either but that could just be that the epic I placed on my lot didn't spawn any for the 2 sim weeks I was in the game because it's supposed to be that kind of timing.

This is not going to happen overnight and I don't know if there is anymore possible information about the subject.

As for epic, I am not sure what is wrong with that spawner. By the way, do you know the meaning of low, medium, high and epic spawners? What do they mean exactly? Do you have any clue, my friend?

I found this list with a little help from google - it's from right here on the forums.   It doesn't show what fireflies are attached because it's an old list but I hope it helps.  BuyDebug Spawners List

Thanks for the link! It helped! So to spawn fireflies, I just have to create Butterfly spawners which are nameless like high, mid and low!

OK, I am facing serious problem here. I keep collecting Firefly fulvus and Firefly pratinus on AP! Why is this so. 2 Sim weeks have past and my collection remains at 25%!

What can I do to achieve perfection? I am a "completionist" by the way and I love to complete all my games. I added the necessary spawners but still I am getting these two types of fireflies again and again!

You've looked at night in the places I previously mentioned every night for two weeks and didn't see them ?  Not just where you placed spawners but where I mentioned having found some.   Also, collecting is a waiting game.  You can place spawners but you can't make them spawn.

Were you certain that you placed the spawners in open areas where no where within the green squares were items that fireflies, butterflies and minor pets could be hiding in?   Minor Pets spawn from the same spots too so make sure to look and see if any of them are there.  Maybe you need to catch some butterflies during the day and some pets to make sure the fireflies spawn.

OK, I finally collected 88% of the fireflies. There is one more firefly which I have yet to collect and that is the Firefly luteus! This is a common firefly so why is it so hard for me to collect it in AP? Where can I find this firefly on AP?

Thanks!

The orange one was the hardest one to find out of all of them and it's only an common.

It took me more than 2 sim weeks to find it and that was scouring lot after lot every night to find this thing.  Just keep looking as I don't remember where it was anymore

Then the developers might have made a mistake. This type of firefly should be rare, not common!

OK, I am having a major issue here and hope someone can help me. I am using Twallan's traveler mod by the way. So far, I collected 88% of unique fireflies. Then, I decided to travel to China. To my dismay, when I reached there, the percentage of unique fireflies collected showed 25%! The other collections like butterflies and beetles are shown correctly but not the fireflies. When I returned home, the percentage of fireflies collected dropped to 12% !

I am simply frustrated! I guess Twallan never foresee the problem of fireflies being collected. The same principle applied to analyzing of rocks but with the mod, it solved the rock issue but not the fireflies issue.

What can I do now? Can someone inform Twallan to fix this issue? Is anyone else facing the same problem?

I guess trying o achieve the perfect Sim seems impossible with all these bugs!

Once twallan is aware of an issue he usually fixes it pretty fast.  If you report it to him on his wiki - http://nraas.wikispaces.com/ - then he would get it even faster.

Then I'm sure twallan has already added it on his list of "Things to do" and will get to fixing it eventually.

Just be patient and keep checking his wiki for updates.

OK, I have finally collected 100% of the fireflies but my happiness was short lived. This is the reason:

This was BEFORE I installed Twallan's traveler mod.

When I analyzed the unique number of rocks before the mod was installed, I traveled and unsurprisingly, the percentage of rocks analyzed dropped. So I installed the traveler's mod and the issue was fixed...so it seems. When I have analyzed 121% of unique rocks, the sentence pertaining to "Awesome Rock Collector in the Universe" was not BOLD in colour! It had seemed that I have not collected 100% of the rocks but 121% of the rocks!

I am deeply frustrated as I am trying to create the perfect Sim where all his attributes are being maximized!

Is anyone else facing the same issue?

Must I start ALL over again in creating that elusive perfect Sim where all his attributes are being maximized? And yes, I am a hardcore Sims 3 player. I am very, very disappointed. I should have installed the mod BEFORE traveling!

I've been having a bit of trouble collecting the fireflies. I've been readin through this post to try and find outwhat was going on. I have collected all but the blue firefly. I have searched 2 vacation destinations and the home neighborhood for many a sim night. Not once have I come across a blue firefly, although I have across the others in adundance. My skill journal says I have collected 25% of all fireflies but have completed the skill challenge for fireflies. Any ideas or tips? Thank you.
