Building Contests 2012: 9 - Minimalist Miniatures

You must read the Rules and Instructions Thread first, if you haven't already. Updates have been made.

Your Task:
Things are getting pretty outdated around the SimNation and so things need to be made a little more modern, not just any modern though, it has to scream modern! The Councils think Minimalist Modern would be a good way to go, using bold shapes, colours and layouts to make an impression. Of course there is a slight catch in that all this has to fit around those pesky existing elderly structures, which naturally take up a lot of space!

Specifications:
  • Lot Type: Residential
  • Number of Bed Spaces: The House will need to be a suitable size for at least 2 Sims (Do not add any sims)
  • Budget: $45,000
  • Lot Size: 10x10 up to 20x20
  • Other: Minimalist and Modern designs.

Optional Specifications:
  • You may want to make bold and interesting layouts etc.
  • It's minimalist, don't go overboard on those decorative items!

Here we are at the entrance... the stone combining with nature is really stunning, isn't it?

Here we are at the side.

The backyard. Surprisingly traditional, with seating, trees, a rock garden, and a garbage can.

The interior. some bold colorings such as the carpet, but an overall muted area with lots of stone.

The bathroom. Only defining feature is the 3 towels lined up like that.

The garage. A place to park your car, place to do laundry, wash your hands with handy sink, place to work on your car, etc etc. Even features a window so you can show off your automobile!

The bedroom. Simple, with small amounts of furnishings but cozy overall.

And finally... the homes at night. 'Tis the stunning sight.

Now I can bet you want to download... so here is the link!

Hey guys I'm taking an extended hiatus... again. I'm out of ideas to build houses and I don't have as much fun designing homes like I used to; it feels more like a chore. So that's where I'll be, I will probably be back sometime. :P

Chez Modern

Welcome to this fusion of Asian influences, natural materials, bold colours, experimental building techniques and restraint. (I'll admit the restraint was the hardest part.)
Chez Modern was build for the urban eco-friendly sims out there who are looking for a statement piece to promote their life philosophy.

Lot type: Residential 1 bedroom, 1,5 bathroom
Lot size: 20*15

Price unfurnished: 32,096
Price furnished: 42,770

EPs: Ambitions, World Adventures, Generations and Pets
SPs: HELS and FLS

Store content:
Haronems lamp (free)
Bookshelf (reward)

Placement: Anywhere but would look wonderful at the beach or in a more urban landscape.

Front view
The outside colour theme is pale crčme and dark wood, the entire lot is fenced with decorative bamboo to give a more organic and warm feel since there is so much sand and rocks in the garden. On the right side of the house a path leads to the backyard and there is a garbage station hidden in the row of plum trees.

Back view
The spacious deck overlooks a zen inspired garden. A half wall gives additional privacy.

Ground floor overview
Kitchen to the left and living room and guest bath to the right.

Kitchen with view over garden
The kitchen is decorated with dark wood, grey marble, stainless steel appliances and bold turquoise.

Living room
The living room has a dining area and additional seating where guests can relax after dinner. The bold spotted wallpaper was added as a focal point and uses colours found throughout the house.

Now - pool windows!
Here you see down the stairs to the basement, note the windows letting in light. That is because small pools with reflective walls and floors have been place just outside the basement walls. This gives the basement an illusion of actually being ground floor level - but with greater privacy since neighbour sims cant peek through the windows!

Here you see the windows from the outside. A warning: sims can and will jump into the larger 2 tile pools. Since there are no ladders drownings may occur.

Basement over view
Bedroom with en suit to the left, study to the right.

Study
With a warm coral and pale yellow you don't fell like you're sitting in the basement when working on those skill points.

Bedroom and en suit
Furnished in jade green with dark wood the bedroom is a modern interpretation of outdoor living. The bathroom sports a full bath.

Building Contest 2012: 9 - Miniature Minimalist  - May 4, 2012 - May 17, 2012
    ZapKid!

Congratulations ZapKid! Modern and Minimalist seem to really be ZapKid's strong point and he's just gone and proven it with a great Minimalist Entry! You can see ZapKid's Entry here and download it here.

ZapKid's Comment:

"Wow! Thanks to everyone who voted for me! I think everyone did a great job on the contest!

When I first entered the contest, I didn't have much of an idea. It was when I expanded my main shell to two stories when it finally came all together. I had the most fun making the exterior and garden in the back. My favorite part of the house was probably the garage; it was nice and roomy so I was a big fan of it.

I enjoyed having to make it so small and cheap. It took me an hour to get the exterior right, the interior was almost impossible.
I finally set on something I liked, and, well, here I am!

So thanks again, everyone! Everyone did stupendous and to be shocked I was surprised I actually won! Thanks for making my first winning contest a real whopper!"

Congratulations ZapKid! This thread is now open for comments!  :)

This contest was so much fun! I have never tried to build anything modern looking before so it was a challenge I both enjoyed and despaired over. Keeping it minimalist was a real struggle.

A few comments:

Ausette - I was so inspired by your orange living room. What a great use of colour and it felt so fresh.

Neashleigh - I love the front of your house with just the two rocks. I wanted to go that route but I just couldn't hold myself back enough  ;)

Dane - I think it is awesome how your exterior seemed so much of the landscape. It felt like one of those houses that was built for a specific spot in order to complement the exterior landscape, and that screams contemporary design to me.

I really enjoyed this contest. I had never really built anything modern before and just learned the cheats for that sort of thing after I had built it. Every contest I enter I learn new things. Everyone did an amazing job on their Modern Minimalist . It was a bit difficult just voting for three. Great job everyone!  :)

Zap: Just like Ausette said, as soon as I saw this I knew this would be the one for you. Congrats!

Ausette: I really liked yours too. The only thing I would change would be just a little more exterior stuff. (like fountains, lounge chairs, etc.) But otherwise I thought it was great!

Anyone else want comments?

I really liked how you used different coverings on the outside of the building. It made something that is very much a box look different and interesting - a great visual illusion.  Inside you had a very pleasing colour scheme, light wood and pale colours don't always look modern, but you pulled it of.

I have one question though. Can 2 sims actually sleep in that bed? I only ask because every time I've tried to decorate that way only one sim can get in the bed. Also, when I decorate and look at the interiors of sim buildings I tend to ask myself "can sims move in this house, would it be possible to use it for a game?". And when I saw your bedroom my first thought was; uh uh, that bed is going to be a problem. In real life though, it wouldn't be an issue and it sure looks pleasing.

P.S. I liked your garden too, it feels very urban.

saltpastillen- Thank you! :)

I wasn't even thinking about whether or not two sims would be able to sleep in the bed. I tested to see if one person could, but didn't check for two.

You're welcome!

And I learned that the hard way - I made an awesome house, and had to tear it down because it was unusable - so now I always test my houses or building projects. And if I build in an active household I always build step by step so I can fix problems before I have to tear it all down.

A tip is to just move in some random sims and make them run crazy testing everything. I have a family called Testsubjects, 1 elder, 2 adults, 1 teen, 2 kids, 2 toddlers, 1 dog and 1 cat. They can really find most performance problems, and sometimes trash the place  ;).

Thanks for the comments, guys!

Ausette - I was so inspired by your orange living room. What a great use of colour and it felt so fresh.

Thanks saltpastillen! The living room was my favourite part too. I'm glad the orange turned out OK; as soon as I'd placed that colour I was determined that it would be in the finished build. I love orange.

Ausette: I really liked yours too. The only thing I would change would be just a little more exterior stuff. (like fountains, lounge chairs, etc.) But otherwise I thought it was great!

Thanks alex, I completely agree with you about the exterior stuff. By the time I got to the backyard I'd run out of money. :P

Okay, onto other feedback:

saltpastillen: I loved the straight lines and clean colours of your exterior. The interior was really pretty too - the layout was clever, the colours were pleasant, and there were plenty of cute little touches that caught my eye (for some reason my favourite part was that panel of wallpaper between the windows in the study). A job well done.  :)

Micler: There's something delightfully coastal about your build. I liked the washed-out colours and fenced-in garden. My only issue was the aforementioned placement of the bed, but the house is still lovely even if it only holds one Sim.

Decima: The walk-in basement was very, very clever. My favourite parts of your build were the bedroom layout, exterior design, and the wallpaper behind the fireplace (I'm a sucker for little details like that). I'm afraid to say the landscaping didn't quite work for me; the terrain paint and fencing didn't seem to fit the lot's irregular elevation. I really liked the outdoor seating area and the garden out the front, though.  :)

Thanks, Ausette! Yeah, I originally had the bed placed vertically in the nook, but realized that no sim could reach the bed. I was trying to figure out where to move it, and discovered how well it fit horizontally. But, I wasn't thinking about the need for two sims.

Your house is beautiful. The exterior is strikingly modern, and the inside is so colourful! I agree about the exterior furnishings, but completely understand the budget issue. The lucky sim who purchases it can finish the backyard! I particularly liked the green kitchen and orange living room. The bedroom closet is very clever, also! :)

saltpastillen- Thanks! That sounds like a great idea.

I thought your entry was very nice. I loved the shape of your house and especially your kitchen. Very clever. I also think the rocks were a very nice touch . You're a great builder and landscaper !

Excellent use of the lot size, I'm amazed how spacious you made it feel! I think my favourite parts are the bedroom and downstairs living area, I'm very fond of the shades of blue you used.

I messed up big time.  Instead of asking if it was okay I just deleted my screenshots from the gallery so now my entries have no pictures.  And I think I have deleted the screenshots from my computer and have run cleaners so they are gone. I apologize and will try to download my builds and take new screenshots. :-[
