Dumpster diving seems to be much more lucrative. I've gotten furniture, expensive TVs, as well as metals and gemstones. Still get stinky, very stinky.

Curious if the family wealth has to be from townies or would it matter if it was a family added to the town.

I have been making some blank towns and seeding them with families where there is a newborn and possibly the female is pregnant in order to have future mates for the children my sims have.

Which has me wondering in the area of rummaging.  The wealthy families, such as the Goth's, have very nice items you can find in their trashcans, such as the reality goggles.
What about the seeded families?  I have couples that I am using that are from other games and they are quite wealthy; from $30,000 to $200,000.
Would they have the nicer items in their trashcans, or would this go with only townies having those items?

I'm assuming that as long as the game gives them the "rich" status (such as when you visit their house and get the "x sim is rich!" notification), they'll have good things in their trashcan. If a seeded family is considered rich, then they probably have expensive trash too.

Don't you have to be a thief or in law enforcement in order to rummage?

No, I've had sims not in those careers successfully rummage through trash. Insane sims like to do it autonomously, from what I've seen.

Plus, any sim can dumpster dive and dumpster diving can be a lot more lucrative. The townsfolk like to throw away tiberium.

When I send my sims off shopping in town, they dumpster dive autonomously while I'm not paying attention. It's amazing what's in those dumpsters.

Ok, I just had to give it a shot.  From arriving in standard Sunset Valley till 1:30 am my Sim dumpster dove and rummaged 3 trash cans.  I used tce to give her the ability to teleport and made needs static, (next time I won't do the static).  Once she got stinky enough, and was getting very low on hygiene, I teleported her to a free shower and off she went again.  For some reason she could not dumpster dive at the junkyard.  Her take (selling straight from inventory) was:

Pele's Postlight                                                  $125
The Bloomington Lamp                                      $ 50
2 Aristocratic First Oval Rug                               $160
Sawed Off Light Caster                                      $ 45
The Savannah                                                   $450
Iron                                                                  $ 18
2 Crocks O' Stuff                                                $ 90
Zephyr Metalmark Butterfly (criminal dumpster)   $ 18
30 Scrap                                                            $ 60
Blushing Torchere                                               $120
Tungsten Carbide                                                $ 58
Mount of Comfort Dining Chair                             $ 90
2 Bears                                                              $100

Total of $1,384 for one day of work.  Combine that with the three cars she swiped and the free food she harvested and this thief would have no worries financially, could easily build a small house, get a spouse and start a dynasty with style, basically within two days and with no skills (except she's a thief).  I didn't mention the value of the cars because that requires a skill and I didn't want it to count.

I might have to try that with my Random legacy environmentalist sims Joria. :) The junk they recover from the junk yard never seems to be usable, just replaceable.

It's so sad.  Back in the day before they "fixed" a good thing, you could acquire the junkyard stuff, hire a repairman to come in and then sell brand new things for a bundle of money with very little effort or cost.  Now it's just junk.  I'm trying out Roaring Heights next.

So it went away with a patch? I don't remember ever being able to repair anything from the junk yard. It must have been patched between release and when I got the game or expansion pack.  Wonder if anyone has made a mod to fix the fix. Does anyone know of one?

So I took a shot at rummaging. It went pretty well! I would like to know who keeps throwing out butterflies though LOL. I went to the 3 dumpsters in the criminal's hangout and found:

First trip: Sonaflux guitar, Zepher Metalmark butterfly, Ladybug, Japanese beetle, Ubervision tv (sold that for $1200) 2 peices of iron, the exquisite bistro chair, cortinas festivals, the Prim and proper love seat and paper towels.

Second trip same lot, next sim day. Quick tick wall clock,  Lulu's artisan end table, Monarch butterfly, Bloomington lamp, 2 red admiral butterflies, Steak and prank microwave and a Saxory rug.

I love The Sims, Candy and my cats.

Just an FYI, Union Cove is HORRIBLE for dumpster diving!  When we built this gorgeous town I think we just forgot places needed dumpsters.  The only 3 I found were one each at the two apartment sites and one behind Little Samoht's Diner.  Haven't tried rummaging yet though.  It's heaven for klepto's with all those gorgeous cars!
