2013 World Ranking
« on: December 10, 2012, 12:53:43 PM »
2013 World Ranking

The World Ranking has two basic components: a Wins component (65%) and a Participation component (35%). I wanted to design a very simple ranking system that was still an effective measure of player caliber. To receive a World Ranking a player must finish at least 3 Tournament challenges. So, let me walk everyone through how one's World Ranking is determined.

Each of the 2013 Tournament challenges has a column in my Tournament spreadsheet. Individual cells in the challenge columns are filled with a ratio of how many players a player beat in that challenge in relation to how many could have been beaten. Let’s take a look at Joe Blow and how Joe did in the first 3 events of the season. Let’s say the field size of event #1 is 25 and Joe finished 8th. That means he beat 17 out of a possible 24 players (I don’t count Joe), so Joe’s event #1 cell is =17/24. The 2nd event was larger, 30 players, and Joe did even better and finished 6th. Event #2’s cell is =24/29. Event #3’s participation dropped to 25, but Joe pulled out all the stops and won it. Event #3’s cell is =24/24.

Down the spreadsheet after all of the individual challenge columns is the “Sum of Wins” column. This is just the total of all of one’s ratios in each challenge column. So, with the first 3 events in the bag, Joe’s “Sum of Wins” column is 2.537.

Next comes the “# of Events” column which is a simple count function for all challenge columns. Joe has only participated in 3 2012 Tournament Challenges so far, so his “# of Events” figure is 3. The “Sum of Wins” is then divided by the “# of Events” for an “Ave of Wins” column:

2.537 / 3 = .845.

Now it’s time to add the weight for the Wins component. The Wins weight for everyone is 65% of final score, so we take .845 X .65 and get .549. That’s Joe’s final Wins component.

The second component is the lesser weighted component (35%) — Participation (I'm actually boosting it 5% compared to its weight in 2010). Everyone who submits a score in a challenge receives a 10% participation bonus figured into their ranking. So, there’s a 10-event cap at which point a player receives 100% of the Participation component. If someone participates in more than 10 Tournament challenges, then a player’s best finishes will be used to compute the World Ranking.

Okay, so Joe Blow has participated in the first 3 events. His participation bonus is .30 (10% per event). Participation counts for 35% of final score, so we then take .30 X .35 to get Joe’s final Participation component of .105.

Joe’s World Ranking is his final Wins component + his final Participation component:

.549 + .105 = .654.

I am rooting for Lena this year.
I just took the trip down your memory lane and noticed that she finished 2nd for all 3 years!
As for myself, I am going to try to participate and hope to get on the final ranking list ;)
Go Lena! Go Lena! :D
Problem? Don't panic! There is always a solution. You just have to find it  :D

It is kind of amazing she has been so consistent for so long. A phenomenal player for sure. It would be awesome if all the truly great past heavy hitters like NancyJ and Claymask were all here at the same time, but alas...this is a game and player's interests often change.

With the Gnome challenge now in the books....that makes 3 events finished for this year and I was able to post the World Ranking for all players who participated in those events. Grats to everyone on the list. :)

Hi! I looked and I'm not on the list even though I've participated in all three of the challenges.

I updated the world ranking to include the results of Metro's Haven. SimBlip's win in that event was enough to barely steal back 1st place from LenaLJ, but it's so close at the top...an amazing race for the championship at the end of the year.

The world ranking has been updated with the We're Coming to Collect challenge now finished. No changes at the top of the heap but quite a few players earned a world ranking since the collecting challenging was their 3rd event finished. Grats to all of you. :)

With Wishmasters now in the bag, I updated the world ranking. I carried out Lena and Simblip's score one more place to show everyone just how crazy close they are. It all boils down to the last 2 events. Good luck to you both as well as everyone else.

I updated the world ranking this morning with the results of the At Your Service challenge. Grats to LenaLJ and Nutella for sharing the championship. Lena has also competed in all events of the season and the At Your Service event was #11 of the year, so because world ranking is based on a player's top 10 events I was able to drop her lowest score. A couple other players were also able to take advantage of that fact. Blackrosea moved up in the rankings with a very solid performances in this event, so go team! :)

There's some discussion in the General Rules thread concerning some changes for the Tournament next year. I also want to change the World Ranking. How the World Ranking is actually computed I think is fine, but I want to take the emphasis off the players beaten component which is currently 65% of a player's World Ranking and make the player's beaten component and the participation component equal for 2014 — 50/50. The cream will inevitably still rise to the top because the really good players will obviously still beat the majority of us, but the nice thing about doing this is it will make World Rankings much tighter towards the end of the season. Feel free to discuss your thoughts on this change.

Since the beginning of the tournaments it has always been a battle of two or three in the end. And the 3rd or 4th always being far behind. The same is pretty clear this year.

If you change it to 50/50 the gap will be so much smaller. But I am not sure if 50/50 is to close again.
But I would like to see some more fight for the first spots, its really fun :)

Well, the participation score has always gotten larger and larger with each year, and I'm pretty sure that gap has tightened somewhat. I think 50/50 would be a good fit.

With the 4 X 4 Challenge now over this season is a wrap. LenaLJ has been around the forum Sims 3 Tournaments since day 1 — she came in 2nd place in 2010 behind NancyJ. She came in 2nd overall in 2011 behind ClayMask. And she came in 2nd place overall last year to drift9999. So, I am pleased to announce that LenaLJ finally clawed her way to the top of this year's World Ranking. Great job, Lena! I will have a plaque made for you very soon as I have done for all the Tournament Champions.

53 different players earned a World Ranking this year — a little less than some years, but I am still happy. I think next year's changes will bring about more participation *fingers crossed*.

On behalf of the entire Challenge Board Team I want to say a big thank you to all that participated in this year's events. Enjoy a little time off the next few weeks and get ready to dive into more events on January 1. The team will work on refining the rules of the first two events this week and we should be posting the rulesets on Dec 15.

It has been 4 super fantastic fun years, and to finally win it is so amazing.
I have learned a lot and know where I still can improve so I simply cant wait to see what you have in store for us next year. How many challenges there will be and what they will be about.

So thank you for making this great entertainment.

Congrats Lena :)

I actually managed to get on the World Ranking this year (a first for me) since I like the more free dynasty play more. But I always read the recaps of the challenges and learn so much about game mechanics from this.

I would have to agree with you Metro that the longer challenges really are a hurdle for those of us who are more novices than veterans when it comes to challenges. I'm looking forward to the new challenge season.

Congratulations LenaLJ on winning this years world ranking. Great Job.

Thank you to all that participated in the challenges this year. Its been a lot of fun creating the challenges as well as reading all the strategies people have had over the year for the different challenges.

Next year should be just as fun. :)
