The Fortunate Fortnight
« on: April 16, 2014, 06:40:19 PM »
The Fortunate Fortnight

Goal
Completing lots of wishes and racking up your Sim’s Happiness Points — that’s the simple goal of this two-week event.

General Challenge Rules
The General Challenge Rules always apply. If applicable, exceptions will be noted below.

Specific Challenge Rules
  • Create 1 Young Adult Sim (any life state is fine).
  • You may also create a pet or add a single pet after going into Live Mode. No other household additions.
  • No drinking Wish Enhancing Serum.
  • All completed Wishes must have different names. For example, “Be Worth More Than 25,000 simoleans” and “Be Worth More Than 50,000 simoleans” are similar, but because of the different values in the name of the wish your Sim can complete both.
  • No name changing at City Hall.
  • No changing a pet’s name after going Live.
  • No Ambitious trait.
  • Traveling is banned.
  • This challenge concludes at the end of 2 weeks (Week 2, Day 7, 11:59 PM).

Scoring

Happiness Points — At the conclusion of the challenge, click the Lifetime Happiness tab of your starting Young Adult Sim (any pet would not be scored in this event). Put your cursor over the treasure chest to obtain the Total Lifetime Happiness Acquired number (spent points + unspent point points). Do NOT use the number to the right of the treasure chest because that number is only unspent happiness points.

Ch-Ch-Changes
The team does not want to edit and make changes to the ruleset once this event goes live, but we may have to. This seasons’ events are shorter and the team has less time to test potential loopholes. If an exploit is brought to our attention or we discover something else we reserve the right to ask affected players to redo their effort.

Have Questions?
Please think hard before you ask in the challenge thread because it may be strategy. What you may consider an innocent question could cause another player to go — “oh, I did not think of doing that.” It’s always safer to PM everyone on the team (Metro, ratchie, Nutella, and Blackrosea) for clarifications. Thanks.

And the Winner is...
After this event has closed everyone is encouraged to discuss how they approached the event, but the winner especially is expected to do so in detail.

Just a reminder of this rule that is in the General Rules:

Options > General Settings > uncheck the Enable Interactive Loading Screens box

It's kind of hidden so I did not want players to forget about that and think that spamming the load screen and restarting 20 times for more happiness points is something you can do hehe.

No worries! I never play the 'find the thing' mini-games in the loading screens, my computer lags when I do that.  ;D

This sounds like a challenge I could do - just playing a single person and the goal is to get as many happiness points as possible using as many unique Wishes as possible. It sounds daunting but I might try that when I am not busy with my unofficial 4x4 Dynasty. (I was making it an Immortal Dynasty but I stupidly forgot to paint the 2nd generation as a toddler!)
I play The Sims 4 for fun, so I don't care if I never end up being interviewed for the Dynasty Hall of Fame; people who play for keeps burn out too easily and don't enjoy playing the games, so I am going to not sweat the details.

Does this mean that you can only lock in an "Improve ... Skill" once and complete it etc?

If the wish is for one particular skill, such as "Improve Cooking Skill" then yes, you can only complete that one once.

Just a reminder that it is really important to write down all wishes your Sim completes. It would be easy to accidentally disqualify yourself by completing two wishes with the same name.

Yikes, just starting my file and my Sim burned... to death  :'(Couldn't even "put self out" and when the firefighters showed up they said that they couldn't reach the fire. At last I got a note saying something like "the end" LOL! I had never had that before in a Sim game! I guess I'm DNF then.

This event is officially closed. Grats to christinal3106 on topping the 36-player field. Well done! Players are now free to share strategy.

For my own effort the big thing was going in a direction I know pretty well — guitar playing and celebrity/charisma. So, I plopped my guy down in Bridgeport and had him skill up guitar quickly and then had him dive into the subway to get some of the biggest wishes in the game — like "Be worth more than 100,000 simoleans" and then "Be worth more than 250,000 simoleans." I do not know if those wishes fire for non-Snobs, but Snobs get the "Buy an object worth x amount" all the time, and so my guitarist/snob racked those up too.

There are lots of happiness points to be had when going the friendship/charisma route when so many wishes fire for your Sim to be Best Friends with X.

Lots and lots of fun. Like tiffieleigh I am always amazed at how good some players are after I post what I think is a decent score. Hehe.

Great job to everyone and thank you for participating.

Well, I am shocked and excited that I won.  Nonetheless, I also went a road I traveled many times, and I went for the Descendant of DaVinci lifetime wish and succeeded.  I loaded up a game and turned off most expansions.  I think I just played with ambitions, supernatural, and university life.  I made a fairy and put him in Sunset Valley on the $3,000 lot overlooking the ocean.  I chose artistic, savvy sculptor, eccentric, loves the outdoors, and lucky as traits.  He lived outside.  I just made a small room for a bathroom, bought a good stereo, some decorative items, and a sculptor's station to start.  I kind of wished I chose loner instead of lucky, but it was already done.  I chose that lifetime wish because of the many large wishes sculpting and inventing always pop.  Also, it is worth 40,000 points.  I just skilled and ate coffee beans.  Eventually, needs were cut down to just showers.  It was the very last day at about 2 pm when he mastered the painting skill, and he got his lifetime wish.  I have all the wishes he completed written down.  It would just be a really long list, so if anyone wants me to share it, I will.
Also, congrats to everyone who finished the challenge, and for the opportunity to even do the challenge.

Thank you, christinal3106. No need in sharing every single wish. How about sharing with other players a list of only those over 5k points? I would be interested in seeing that one myself.

Sure, I unfortunately didn't write down the values of every wish, but I am pretty sure that these are the ones that are worth at least 5,000 points.  There are many like sculpt a topiary, detonate x amount of items, etc. that are worth in the thousands.
Make a brilliant sculpture, Master sculpting skill, Sculpt a masterpiece, Make 10,000 sculpting, Make 20,000 sculpting, Sculpt something over $1000 (I think), Build a miner, Build a time machine, Master inventing skill, Detonate 50 and 100 objects.  Detonate 100 objects is worth a whooping 11,000!  And Master Painting Skill.  There is more with painting in general, but it was my last skill, and the one I spent the least amount of time on.  Many of these are worth far more than 5,000 points.  I love sculpting and inventing.  The sim skill up faster and the wishes are worth tons of points.

I was most wondering what you are meaning with this :)

"Nonetheless, I also went a road I traveled many times, and I went for the Descendant of DaVinci lifetime wish and succeeded."

The travel part is the thing im not understanding.

Else we had the same strategy with the DaVinci ltw. :D, i was just not very lucky with the wishes my sim got.

Yes, that is exactly what I meant.  I did something I have done many times.  Sorry, I guess I could of worded that better.  I was lucky a lot in the challenge.  As soon as the masterpiece sculpture fired up, the sculpture I was working on was a masterpiece.  Same thing with the inventions.  As soon as the time machine and miner one came up it was the next thing my sim invented.  It just all worked out really well.

Well, I got a wish to sculpt a masterpiece, and the next sculpture I made was a masterpiece.  I read the rules probably 20 times especially after I submitted my score and saw it was quite a big higher than the rest.  I did everything exactly how I could and followed every rule.

Do you guys remember a song that said something like "here I go again on my own, going down the only road I've ever known..." What Cristina said about traveling made me remember it!

I was also going for Da Vinci LTW, it is definitely the best! Just mastering skills are 5K wishes, then there is the "build miner", "build time machine"... My problem was: I'm not good at dealing with my Sim's needs! I did a test file and in that one got lucky with always finding those energy elixirs, but in my real file my Sim was just on coffee, she got that "crashed" moodlet when she was inventing, at the very beginning so she set herself in fire! I guess I also got the "steel bladder" first when I should've gotten the "efficient inventor", perhaps in that way she would have made it... what do you guys think? How did you deal with the Sim's needs?

My sim caught on fire a few times too.  When I bought the fireproof homestead LTR that helped a lot.  The only time it happened though is while inventing, not while he was actually making the inventions.  I just used coffee beans.  As soon as you crash you just eat another and are fine except for the coffee breath moodlet, but it doesn't take away any mood.  I really think that lucky trait helped more than I thought.

I found my sim went through a dry patch in the middle, she stopped rolling wishes altogether for a couple of days so that was frustrating, ironically it was after she did her lifetime wish so had that nice moodlet, maybe she just felt so happy and content she didn't want anything else.

I picked Alchemy Artisan for mine, I looked at the guide and all the lifetime wishes and what they were worth and at 40k that seemed relatively easy to finish, totally forgot about all those sculpting wishes, which was daft considering anybody who has done an Immortal dynasty knows they give a lot of wishes.

Quite a lot of my points came from writing comic books, my sim was a bookworm and I had her get one point in painting then started writing comics, they are super fast to finish and she just kept wishing to make x amount in royalties, or write x amount of best sellers.

Anyway congratulations Christinal  :D

@christinal3106 — thank you for the info. When I read that bit about the sculpture Masterpieces I was concerned you did not know from General Rules that the MoveObjects cheat was only allowed for stuck objects.

That exploit is when you check to see if something is a masterpiece. My strategy was giving the sim a combination of four traits- No Sense of Humor, Loves the Outdoors, Over Emotional, and Liner. An example of just how happy she was- she caught on fire from descendant of da Vinci and she was still earning happiness points. It was amazing!

Wow Lisa, so lucky of you! Next time I should really thing of the traits... I gave her the related traits for the LTW (artistic, sculptor, eccentric) and the other two I don't remember, but should've been something like the ones you just said... or lucky like Cristina's. Oh boo, anyways, I'd always been curious on what would happen if your only Sim died, now I know!

Forgot to say "congrats Cristina" on my last post! :)

Congratulations Christinal3106!

I started my Sim on an empty lot and made her wish for everything she wanted. I think what killed me was her lifetime wish. I did get it, but because I chose jack of all trades she ended up not getting as many happiness points from the wishes that went with it. Ah well, you live and learn. :)

Actually, at first I thought giving her No Sense if Humor would be a mistake, but she was literally having a blast the entire two weeks.

I went for the lifetime wish 'swimming in cash' and then trained my dog to hunt. Didn't have to take time away from my Sim to get the lifetime wish accomplished.  By day 4, my dog had brought home enough soulpeace, pink diamonds, woohooium and supernovium to get to 50k easy.

I took second and here are my top fulfilled wishes:

35,000  Alchemy Artisan
10,000  Take Photo Worth $3500
 7,500  Master Photography Skill
5,000  Reach Level 10 of Photography Career
5,000  Reach Level 10 of Alchemy Career
 5,000  Take Photo Worth $2500
 4,500  Create 20 Elixirs

So my first choice was going Genie.  I did that for the summon food ability, because the +50 moodlet let me keep my mood meter full green all the way full.  There are some times that I got hit with negative moodlets, but the +50 easily overpowered them.

For traits, I went with Photographic Eye to trigger the photo wants and because I knew it skilled fast.  As long as you don't care about losing money you can level photography fast.  I added Loves the Outdoors to try to keep mood meter green (wasn't much help).  I picked Dog Person to help with social, but was pretty irrelevant as my sim chugged Bliss potions constantly.   I had the same idea that Metropolis Man did about Snob.  I got it to spawn those "buy a xxx" wishes and the "Be worth more than xxxx" wishes.  It only half-worked for me.  I got the "Buy a xxx" wishes (20 of them for a total of 9500 happiness).  However, I never saw a "Be worth more than xxxx" wish.  It was also a minus at the consignment shop because I kept get the "Feeling Cheap" bad moodlet, but fortunately lobster thermidor more than overpowered it.  I also had Born Salesman trait which made making simoleans and leveling my professions easy-peasy.

There were a lot of little wishes in there for Take Photo of, Take B&W Photo of, etc as well as Make xxx potion, Use xxx potion and consign xxx potion.  All of those are why I went Alchemy/Photography.  Christinal3106 won fair and square, no sour grapes, but I made some bad decisions that could have increased my score - like right clicking on Buy 3 venues when I meant to left click.

I went right to skilling up Alchemy and made my first Envigorating Elixir before the first day was out and never slept.  I notice that Christinal used coffee beans to avoid sleep.  I think not sleeping really helped both of us.

How do you manage to get the make $10,000 selling photographs wish to fulfill?  I could never get it, doesn't matter if i sell it in the consignment store or through inventory or through the camera - it just doesn't count.

Mutter, mutter.  Cut and paste error.  I promised the wish, but had to cancel so never fulfilled it.  I wrote my wishes down when I promised them... and why I wrote down the broken wish I don't know.  I'll chalk it up to being late at night and on too much coffee.  Anyway, if those wishes were fulfillable, it would have easily made photography the best way to go.

I'll also go back and edit it off the list.

Well done Christinal3106, that was an impressive score. I also went for sculpting first before I moved on to inventing when her wishes stopped rolling, but I forgot about that LTW. I'm pretty sure I used swimming in cash as it was easy to fulfil.
From the moment I fell down that rabbit hole I've been told what I must do and who I must be. I've been shrunk, stretched, scratched and stuffed into a teapot. I've been accused of being Alice, and of not being Alice, but this is my dream. I'll decide where it goes from here.

I chose the Professional Author LTW and Artistic, Bookworm, Computer Whiz, Couch Potato and Hates the Outdoors for traits.  Artistic was probably the least useful of the bunch - it's supposed to make her learn writing faster, but I don't think it provided me any useful wishes.  Bookworm won most useful, of course, just for the "Read x books total" wishes, but Computer Whiz was also really helpful.  It boosts the rate at which she gains fun from playing computer games, and Lucy could go from Stressed to Having a Blast in roughly an hour, without even having to move.

I'm a terrible builder, so I just bought her the cheapest house in Riverview and sold off all the appliances so she would wish for them.  I ended up not getting her a fridge or stove; I just made do with a mini-fridge.  I didn't get a moodlet from the food, but cooking just takes too much time.  For decor, I completely abused the vase that comes with the WA registration pack - it's +5 decor and only costs $1.  I just stuck two in pretty much every room, and she had a +45 Beautifully Decorated moodlet all the time.  Her desk is a little odd looking - she's got a super-cheap desk and the most comfortable chair in the game.  Add in a stereo to play her favorite music, and she was in such a good mood that even being Stressed didn't make much of a dent.

My strategy for completing her LTW was heavily influenced by University.  I had Lucy specialize in sports books - perhaps slightly ironic, given that she was a Couch Potato, but they're super-short, you only need Writing 3 for them, and they make a ton of money.  She could crank out a book and a half to two books in a day.  I also had her buy a copy of every single comic book in the bookstore, as they're really short and really cheap.  Then whenever she popped a wish to read so many books, I had her read the comic books.

That is really interesting. I have not done a writer since the last writing challenge which predates University, so I am embarrassed to admit I was not aware of the new Sports Writer specialty. Yeah take a look at this —

Sports has the highest royalty per page ratio of any genre.

@tirajm I love those dragon vases too!  Those things are great.  It makes any broke sim have a beautifully decorated house!!
@Jack Alltrades  I love genies.  They are awesome.  I chose the fairy for a few reasons though.  First, I could get a skill boost to painting with the creative aura or whatever it is.  Also, other times, especially after the fairy LTR, I could pretty much use the aura of soothing all the time for another =20 mood.  Plus every night, she got the =20 moon one.  My moon is set to constant waxing gibbous. (I think.)  The coffee beans were best for me because I had no plan to even touch alchemy.  Plus you have to get ingredients either by growing or constantly going to the elixir store.  I just bought like 150 coffee beans at the very start, and it took care of hunger too.  Most of the time, my sim was stuffed actually.  Every few hours I had to eat another bean, but the beans also give a =30 mood.  So with those mood boosts, the beautiful vista, having a blast (except for when he was inventing), the stereo one, and the loves the outdoors, he was always elated.

No, they are not banned in the general rules. Each challenge will state if herbs, coffee beans, or elixirs are banned. The only thing banned in the General Rules is the Midas Touch Elixir for all challenges.

For this challenge, the Wish Enhancing Serum was banned, but everything else was ok.
