Voidcritters Go!
« on: August 19, 2016, 06:20:25 AM »
Voidcritters Go!

Goal
Yes, the craze has come to Willow Creek, Oasis Springs, and even Windenburg and Newcrest. Children everywhere are diving into trash barrels and looking in logs. Do your Sim children want to get in on this? You betcha!

General Challenge Rules
The General Challenge Rules always apply.

Specific Challenge Rules
  • This challenge requires the Kids Room Stuff pack. You can purchase this here.
  • Create 2 adults and 4 children in CAS, any traits.
  • No adding to the household, no moving.
  • You may go into Buydebug to get a satellite dish to prevent abductions.
  • Your Sims may not buy Voidcritter cards; they must either find them or trade for them.
  • Your household may have only one outdoor trash can.
  • Children do not have to go to school; however, each day with a D average results in a 10 point penalty.
  • This challenge ends when your 4 children age up to Teen.

Scoring

Each unique Voidcritter card is worth its power level. You may consider the foil cards to be unique, for a total of 40 cards. Please use [Lena's spreadsheet] to calculate your Total.

Example: Child A has 3 unique cards worth 7 points each, 2 cards worth 5 points, and 3 cards worth 1 point for a total of 34 points; Child B has 10 cards worth 2 points for a total of 20 points; Child C has 4 cards worth 10 points, but had 2 days with a D grade for a total of 20 points; and Child D has 12 cards worth 1 point each for 12 points. Grand total is 86.

Ch-Ch-Changes
The team does not want to edit and make changes to the ruleset once this event goes live, but we may have to. If an exploit is brought to our attention or we discover something else we reserve the right to ask affected players to redo their effort.

Have Questions?
Please think hard before you ask in the challenge thread because it may be strategy. What you may consider an innocent question could cause another player to go — “oh, I did not think of doing that.” It’s always safer to PM everyone on the team (Metro, ratchie, Nutella, LenaLJ, Trip, and MarianT) for clarifications. Thanks.

And the Winner is...
After this event has closed everyone is encouraged to discuss how they approached the event, but the winner especially is expected to do so in detail.

This Event is Now Closed

This sounds like a brilliant challenge! Never even poked around voidcritters, so I'll have to run a few test games...

Unique overall -- you'll have a limit of 40 cards.

Don't know whether the way I did this would disqualify me, but: the 4 children of Poki and Digi Mon discovered 34 unique Void Critter cards and trained them up for a score of 297. There were 2 B students and 2 C students when the game aged them up.

Final score: 297 I so wish I had found those last 6 cards :-(

Edit: by disqualified I meant, that no kid had their "own" VC, it was a "communal" thing.

Thanks @Magpie2012! I was really excited to do so well. :)

Team, is it ok if I PM Magpie my strategy? We are both already done with the challenge, so I don't think it would count as strategy sharing/influencing the event. But I wanted to double-check.

I have to admit, I had a lot of fun with this challenge. I always buy every Sims pack I can get my hands on, but I rarely actually play with all the content. That's why I love these challenges so much, they expand my gameplay in ways I would have never thought of. Challenge Team, you're awesome.

Here are my scores:

Mandy - 6 cards worth 10pts each, 1 card worth 1pt = 61
Emma - 9 cards worth 10pts each = 90
Eric - 12 cards worth 10pts each = 120
Nash - 6 cards worth 10pts each, 1 card worth 5pts = 65
Total Score = 336

Mandy and Emma both had a B average.
Eric and Nash both had a C average.

Really wish I would have been able to find those other 5 cards, but I ran out of time. Can't wait to hear everybody's strategies!

Childhood is over in the Wilder family.

Levi ended up with 9 VC cards (90 pts).

Jonah had 11 VC cards (110 pts).

Mya ended up with 10 VC cards (100 pts).

Carmen had 8 VC cards (80 pts).

Total- 38 unique cards, no grade deductions...380

If only I had found the other two cards.

Did so much worse than I thought I would ... partly because I didn't realize that 4 cards had already reached level 10 and so weren't showing up and so I'm sure I wasted some time leveling up a couple of cards that I didn't need too.  Ahh well, still had a decent amount fun playing, which was nice.  Thank you again for doing these challenges guys.  :)

Cant go in and check which kid had what card right now as i only have limited internet here where i am and google drives wont open at all.

But my kids got all the cards maxed, and no one got a bad grade,
So that must mean max points of 400.

I have only 10 min left, only started today and noticed that I couldn't fisnish at all.
Nevertheless in the 2 sim-days that I played I got the following score:
Lieke 10
Ludo 12
Audrey 7
Jack 16

Total: 45 :P At least it's something right? I would've loved to see what score I could get when I had time to finish it.

I confused the deadline and hardly started this challenge, so I'm submitting a completely embarrassing partial score.
My kids found 3 cards each which they didn't level at all.

So that's....12 points? lol

Sorry, meant to log on earlier and post strategy. I'll see if I can remember it all... it's late and I'm tired haha.

#1 - All my kids had the geek trait because of the higher chance of finding collectibles. I tested this theory specifically for finding voidcritter cards vs. toys/nothing in my practice run, and I definitely saw a difference (roughly 45% chance without the trait vs. 65% with it)

#2 - Got one of the parents to level 3 writing skill ASAP. This gave them the ability to write excuse notes every 4 days. So my kids' schedules were:
Mon 1 - Excuse notes for all
Tues-Thurs 1 - Vacation days
Fri 1 - Excuse notes for all
Mon 2 - Skipped school
Tues 2 - Excuse notes for 2 kids, sent 2 to school (hw done and study hard for max performance gain)
Weds 2 - Reverse of Tues 2
Thurs-Fri 2 - Sent kids to school because I had maxed out my score already, but performance was high enough that I could have skipped both days if needed.

#3 - The only time my kids ran around town collecting cards was the first day, to give them a jump start. All other cards were gained by trash can diving and trading. Running around just takes up too much training/trading time.

#4 - My kids also met lots of neighborhood kids as they were running around, so that they could invite them over for trading later.

#5 - All cards can be gained through trading. After I got my first duplicate card, I consistently had neighbor kids over at my house and at least one of my kids trading with them constantly.

#6 - Also, as far as trading goes, you are much more likely to get a Rare card if you trade a Rare card, etc. There's still a chance that you can get a card of a different "level" (rare/common/uncommon) when trading, but it's definitely most likely that you will get back a card of the same level.

#7 - I don't know if that applies to Foil vs. Regular cards (didn't actually think of that until I was having difficulty getting my last card - but then I tried trading a Foil Articorn and immediately got the last card I needed - Foil Canis).

#8 - Train higher level and rare cards first. For example, if I have the choice to train a level 7 Canis or a level 1 Articorn, I will train the Canis first. Even though the Articorn trains faster at first, I had every intention of getting a perfect score, so that was irrelevant to me. Also, the longer my kids are trading, the higher possibility they might find say a level 5 Articorn, which I can swap out my level 1 for. If I've already trained up my level 1 Articorn, that's time wasted. So I always trained the higher level and rarer cards over the low level/common cards, simply because there was a higher probability that I could replace the low level/common cards with higher level cards gained through trading.

I think that's pretty much it. I had 39 of the cards by Sunday #2, and then it took me till Wednesday I think to get the last foil Canis. I maxed out my score on Thursday #2 in the early AM.

Well, my "practice run", otherwise known as my scoring file lol went OK, I guess. I spent the first week collecting (which was why I asked how long the child stage was, because I thought I'd have another 2 weeks to do the other stuff) and the second week was spent training and trading. I also used Minnie's approach of training higher cards first, but, that was more because I like getting to 10 quick than any real strategy (at least, until I traded my first level 1 Velid for a level 6 Canis!). I found the trading pretty random, but, it was brilliant to get high level cards for my dinky level 1 and 2's! I think Olivia SKL was fed up with my kids by the end of my first trading day. I basically had them trade 3 cards each with her, on a perpetual loop. By Wednesday of the second week, I introduced trading with Max V and Lucas M as well.

I'm a little late getting this in, but here's how I played this challenge.

My strategy started with lot choice. I wanted public trash cans, frog log spawners, and public playground equipment nearby to ensure NPC children walking by regularly. I chose the 40x30 lot in between the pirate ship and monkey bars in Newcrest. I only left the lot once.

I had one child be the designated trader for the family. She held all the cards available for trade and spent most of her time talking to every NPC child in the neighborhood. She loved the outdoors so the associated +2 moodlet helped keep her happy while out trading.

The other three children spent their time training. I didn't know geeks had better luck finding cards so only one of my children was a geek. Personally, I found it annoying because even though he spent hours every day training Voidcritters, he still got tense from not playing video games.

As for school, I had forgotten about the excuse note capabilities with the writing skill. Kudos Minnie Mouse. In my save, each child went four days (focused with homework complete), took four days vacation, and skipped two. That was more than necessary because they all ended with As, but I wanted to be positive not to get any grade penalties and I hadn't play tested the negative effects of skipping school. Oops.

After my trader spent the entirety of the second Wednesday trading without gaining any points for the family, she started training too. I didn't want to run the risk of not maxing the 38 cards we had found. We finished with about 18 sim hours to go. My trader invited her best NPC friends over plus one new kid who happened to walk by to give it one more go. No luck.

It seemed like each NPC child held different rare cards so to get them all you needed to make "good" trades (see Minnie Mouse's description) with as many different NPCs as possible. My trader was really good friends with at least 10 of them (more than any other child sim I've ever played).
