« on: April 24, 2017, 06:31:07 AM »
Restaurant Simpossible

Goal
You have just ten Sim days to change the fortunes of five failing restaurants. Can you do it or is it just Simpossible!

General Challenge Rules
The General Challenge Rules always apply. If applicable, exceptions will be noted below.

Specific Challenge Rules
  • Create one young adult Sim. Alien or human, vampires are not allowed.
  • No moving anyone in.
  • You must choose the Private Dwelling lot trait and the debug cheat to purchase a satellite to prevent abductions.
  • You must place Hogans Burger Bar, Sunnyside Up Diner, L'attente Bistro, Villa Bovine and Chez llama.
  • Use the motherlode cheat two times to give your Sim 100,000 Simoleans. You may not use the cheat again.
  • Purchase Hogans Diner. You have 48 hours to make your restaurant a success. Any changes you make must be internal - no structural changes to the building. Changing internal walls is fine, but not outside walls.
  • After 48 hours note your star rating and perk points and then sell your restaurant.
  • Use the profits to purchase another restaurant and begin the process again.
  • Any hired staff can be re hired if they are available when you move to subsequent restaurants.
  • The game ends when your Sim ages to adult or if you go broke and are unable to purchase a new restaurant.
  • You may use manage world's to bulldoze a previously owned restaurant this is the only permitted use of manage worlds. You may not use manage household to delete any Sims.
  • The May 25th patch added 2 days to the YA lifespan on short. Instead of ending when your Sim becomes an adult, you need to end after 48 hours at your 5th restaurant.

Scoring
Perk Points. Purchased Perks, as well as any unspent Perk Points, carry over from restaurant to restaurant, so when you are done add together all spent and unspent points for your total.

Star Rating/10. Add up the total star ratings of all five restaurants and then divide that number by 10.

Total. Just multiply your Perk Points by your Star Rating/10 for your final score.

Example: Hogans Burger Bar acquires 3500 Perk Points and a 2-star rating; Sunnyside Up Diner - 2700 Perk Points and a 3.5 Star rating; L'attente Bistro - 3000 Perk Points and a 4-star rating; Villa Bovine - 2250 Perk Points and a 3.5 star rating; Chez Llama - 4000 Perk Points and a 5-star rating.

Total Perk Points = 15450
Total Star Rating = 18/10 = 1.8
Total = 15450 X 1.8 = 27810

Ch-Ch-Changes
The team does not want to edit and make changes to the ruleset once this event goes live, but we may have to. If an exploit is brought to our attention or we discover something else we reserve the right to ask affected players to redo their effort.

Have Questions?
Please think hard before you ask in the challenge thread because it may be strategy. What you may consider an innocent question could cause another player to go — “oh, I did not think of doing that.” It’s always safer to PM everyone on the team (Metro, ratchie, LenaLJ, Trip, and MarianT) for clarifications. Thanks.

And the Winner is...
After this event has closed everyone is encouraged to discuss how they approached the event, but the winner especially is expected to do so in detail.

This Event is Now Closed

You can rehire them when you move to the next restaurant if they are available. I will edit and reword that rule.

They were not up for re-hire as they were still working at the last restaurant, no loss there as they were not very good, but staff at current restaurant are and I would like to keep them when I sell up.  If I fire them, then it goes way into the dislike bar!  Just not sure if there is a way around this.  Thanks for the speedy reply!

I'm assuming the answer to my second restaurant-related question is a yes. *dying to start a practice file

I'm wondering if selecting the Private Dwelling lot trait will also prevent vampire break-ins?
I certainly hope so since learning to craft garlic objects takes time away from every tournament challenge.

Does anyone know?

Unspent perk points carry over from one restaurant to the next. Shouldn't we only include unspent perk points in our score for the final restaurant owned to avoid double counting?

I have a question about the rule below:
Quote
Purchase Hogans Diner. You have 48 hours to make your restaurant a success. Any changes you make must be internal - no structural changes to the building.

Does "no structural changes" mean that walls may not be added or removed?

ETA: Sorry for the wrong-direction bracket...

Correct.

You may not alter the shell of the building. You can remove or add walls inside your restaurant.

Here's a Gallery image of Sunnyside Up Diner.

[ You are not allowed to view attachments ]

Note that following (which may be hard to read).

File size 146 kb
30x20 lot with 2 bathrooms
Value: $44,436

It should be in your "My Library" section of the Gallery, not the "Community" section.
Good luck finding it!

A couple rules modifications...

  • You must choose the Private Dwelling lot trait to prevent abductions. To be extra safe you may use the debug cheat to purchase a satellite.

***Purchase Hogans Diner. You have 48 hours to make your restaurant a success. Any changes you make must be internal - no structural changes to the building. Changing internal walls is fine, but not outside walls.

When Julia Child aged up to adult, she had accumulated the following:

Total Perk Points
= 14,830
Total Star Rating = 16/10 = 1.6
Total = 14,830 X 1.6 = 23,728

This was really fun!
I spent so much time planning the practice run that I decided not to do a practice run, despite several bumps in the road.

Total Perk Points = 20,930
Total Star Rating = 22.5/10 = 2.25
Total = 20,930 X 2.25 = 47,092.5

I'm not sure what to do with the fraction in the Total Star Rating.
Challenge Team, please revise my score as you see fit.

P.S. The explanation for tallying perk points is easier to understand now.
P.P.S. Even with the Private Dwelling lot trait, there was a vampire break-in which prevented everyone from leaving the restaurant until almost 5 a.m.

Yes, it's written more clearly now. I thought I was supposed to be counting spent points at each individual restaurant, then adding the unspent points from the last restaurant - hence my confusion. Thank you :)

P.P.S. Even with the Private Dwelling lot trait, there was a vampire break-in which prevented everyone from leaving the restaurant until almost 5 a.m.
I also had a vampire break-in with the trait. Vlad showed up and poofed his way through my restaurant cleaning up dishes. Thanks, but no thanks? :-\

So I guess the trait doesn't work at all on commercial lots. Though it definitely works on private lots - Vlad also attempted to break into my house last challenge, but was unable to come through the front door (he then stomped off angrily into the sunrise).

I'm having a glitch with my game.  For some strange reason some Sims are not leaving after they have finished their meals.  They have a four star above their heads but just keep hanging around the restaurant till it closes and then the rating doesn't get added!

@crstasse

I had one table like that every single time I opened the restaurant. The same thing happens in my longer challenge game, too.
EA Answers HQ lists it as a Dine Out bug but offers no work-around.  Sorry you're suffering it, too!

Now I remember why I don't own restaurants in my games. LOL

Total Perk Points = 26405
Total Star Rating = 20.5/10 = 2.05
Total = 26405 X 2.05 = 54,136

Now I can move on to a more enjoyable challenge, Collecting.

48 hours? Meaning our first restaurant switch would be 8:00 Am Tuesday or at whatever time it was when the restaurant was bought?

Could you please clarify the perks calculation? Is it unspent perks points only? if I spend them how do I know how much I earned in the first place? Sorry if it's a noob question but I haven't owned restaurants before  :-[

Not a noob question -- it took us a while to figure it out. You need to keep track of the perk points you spend at each restaurant. Some of your perks will carry from one restaurant to the next, but some are for a 24-hour period only. Your perk points will also carry over. So, at the end, add up the perk points you spent and add the perk points you didn't spend for your total.

Well, even though I'm at the bottom again, I learned a lot from this challenge.  I thought I was doing quite well for myself with the three star rating, but evidently I fell short on the perk points.  Still I had never played a restaurant although I have had the Dine Out pack for a long time, so I thank the team for getting me to try it out.  As usual, I am in awe of the players and I will enjoy finding out their techniques.  ;D

Oops, I forgot to add the scores.

Stars 3+3+3+3+3.5 = 15.5
multiplier 15.5/10 = 1.55
Perks 7275

Score 7275 X 1.55 = 11,276

Note: If you have already finished this challenge, this rule does not apply to you:

The May 25th patch added 2 days to the YA lifespan on short. Instead of ending when your Sim becomes an adult, you need to end after 48 hours at your 5th restaurant.

About this change related to the patch..

Before the patch on short lifespan, your sim aged up to adult on the second Wednesday at 8 pm. Per the rule change, we will be finishing at 8 am on the second Wednesday. Did no one who has already finished run the restaurant for those last twelve hours?

Possibly some people did, but others ended earlier on Wednesday, so we're leaving the rule as it stands.

As per the new rules (glad I checked first!) I ended at 8AM on the 2nd Wednesday.

Total Stars: 24.5
Total Perk Points: 38,535

Total: 2.45 x 38,535 = 94,411

I have to mention, I had 5 nearly simultaneous deaths in my 4th restaurant! (Grimmy was there for quite a while) I guess when one elder goes, the rest follow...

Also, what is it with vampires always trying to sit outside? Don't they know the sun is bad for them? Some sims just need to go back to vampire school. :P

Thanks for another great challenge, team! I really enjoy restaurants, and was unable to finish the restaurant challenge last year, so it was great to have another restaurant-oriented challenge. :)

My game was bug filled. Always had a table of sims that didn't leave until closing and got hit with the chef bug so no matter skill level my chef never did better than normal food quality on the every last day I found a way to get excellent quality but by then it was a bit late. Lastly sometimes Tuesday evening my sim got stuck then a little after than 3 other sims got stuck including a waiter. So I called it quits then and just ended a bit early.

Thanks again, team, for a really awesome challenge. I really love restaurants, so this challenge was a lot of fun for me (bugs and all). Lena, I'm really sorry to hear you forgot to post your score... That's really sad. :( I was fully expecting you and Ratchie to knock me down a couple of notches by the time the challenge ended.

Anyway, here's my strategy. Again, sorry for the lengthiness. I feel like I'm always too verbose when posting these things, but I never know what to leave out...

Ratings Strategy
  • I used lot traits to increase the quality of the food and the speed in learning cooking skills. (3rd lot trait reserved for Private Dwelling, although this didn't prevent Vlad from breaking in to... clean up dishes? Yeah...)
    • I considered using a lot trait to improve charisma and comedy, but decided it was easier to recover from poor social interactions than bad food.
  • I spent as much money on training as possible, even though I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to hire the same staff at the next restaurant.
    • For me, it was hit and miss with rehiring. One restaurant, I got 4/5 of my old staff back. The next, I could only get a single chef. If anyone had strategies here, I really want to hear them!
  • I used the best ingredients possible, and only marked up prices to 150%.
  • If I had low-level chefs, I removed high-level dishes (difficulties 4 and 5) from the menu.
  • I comped food strategically – generally anyone with a 2 or 3-star rating. Not enough to severely impact my profit, but enough to get my ratings up fast. By the end of each 48-hr period, customers were almost always naturally achieving a 5-star rating.
  • I used the warming thingies outside, and nice décor inside to improve atmosphere.
All restaurants except Hogan’s had a 5 star rating by the end of the 48-hr period.

Perk Points Strategy
  • I only closed my restaurants in 2 or 3 hour intervals. Just enough time off to prevent my staff from becoming unsatisfied quickly. (I also praised and promoted them regularly to avoid dissatisfaction)
  • After the first day, I always had the Meal Rush perk active to get more customers.
  • My sim never left the restaurant. So, she formed a club on the first day and used Rally the Troops to fill energy, food, and bladder needs. Other needs were filled during spare time at the restaurant.
  • My sim interacted with every customer. During rush periods, she didn’t always have time to use every interaction. But she got most of them!
  • I was also strategic about my order of interactions, to prevent possible routing conflicts with the waiters. (Bug note: If your sim and a waiter route to the same table at the same time, and that table is against the wall, the waiter will likely fail to take that customer’s order… ever. This also occurs occasionally for tables not against the wall.)
    • Welcome before the waiter comes (if possible – otherwise wait till after order is placed)
    • Check on Table and Prioritize Food after they place their order
    • Purchased the customer recommendation perks ASAP to increase frequency of recommendations
This gave me about 7500 points per 48-hr period.

Other Strategy
  • After Hogan’s, I purchased restaurants from most to least expensive, to prevent possible money worries.
  • I also purchased all restaurants unfurnished to cut down on costs and only buy what I needed.
  • In some restaurants, I modified interior walls to relocate the kitchen to a more convenient area.
  • I didn’t place tables against walls, and I tried to allow lots of space around them to minimize routing conflicts.
  • I didn’t hire elders because I didn't want them to die during a shift.
I think that’s pretty much everything. Thanks again for a fun challenge. :)

Congrats Minnie Mouse. Also congrats to the team and all participants.

Minnie Mouse strategy is really interesting. I didn't know that closing for a couple hours is enough for the employees. Somehow I assume they need at least 8-12 hours of rest (just like me ^^). Because I assumed that, I opened my restaurant almost 24 hours a day but there were two shifts, 12 hours each. After the shift I fired all employees and hired the new set. I always train all of them during their stay. Firing them cause negative relationship and they were quite upset but they will usually come in as customers later which is when I talk and praise and be funny until the relationship become green. I have maximum number of employees at all time so at the beginning of the challenge most of the employees have low skills but I will always have a pool of them with more skills to hire later. Overall, it worked but didn't work as well as I expect cause some of them got new jobs and I didn't have as many choices to hire as I would like.

I did many things similar to Minnie Mouse like the order of restaurant to buy, the quality of food, pricing, meal rush, and so on. I was forced to hire elders twice and they died on the job. It was bad but also funny to see everyone stop eating/cooking and cry for awhile and then come back and continue to eat. I welcome and check on table for every single table but the rest of the interactions are random. I have to spend time on my ex-employees so didn't have much time left for all interactions. Oh and my sim live on potions. I don't have the club content.

It is also good to know about the glitch as well. I had strange things happened quite a lot. Some will get 5-start while the other left with 1, now I know why. Once the stars on some customers just disappear but they were still eating. Nevertheless, it was fun.
