Sul Sul! And Thanks for All the Fish
« on: August 27, 2017, 02:58:18 PM »
Sul Sul! And Thanks for All the Fish

Goal
As every galactic hitchhiker knows, the Simiverse is filled with many strange and wonderful things. But there are strange and wonderful things that can be found in the waters of your town as well. The question is, how many of them can your Sim find before becoming a stay-at-home elder? In this challenge, your Sim will build a rocket ship and go exploring but also fish for treasure.

General Challenge Rules
The General Challenge Rules always apply. If applicable, exceptions will be noted below.

Specific Challenge Rules
  • Create one Human YA in CAS -- the Kleptomaniac trait is banned.
  • You must choose the Private Dwelling lot trait and the debug cheat to purchase a satellite to prevent abductions.
  • No adding to the household.
  • The astronaut career is optional. If your Sim is sent on a space mission at work, you are able to count any unique item brought back from a mission.
  • You cannot end space adventures early by canceling them.
  • Objects brought back from Sixam are not eligible for scoring.
  • This challenge ends when your Sim ages up to Elder.

Scoring

SA/CM/Fish Items - SA stands for Space Adventures and CM stands for Career Missions. Each unique item brought home from a space adventure or career mission counts 10 points, as does each unique item caught while fishing.

Mult - Each successful (i.e., no crash landing) space adventure is worth .01 towards a multiplier.

Example: Arthur Dent brought home 7 different aliens, 3 different space rocks, and an electronic upgrade part from his travels for 110 points. He also caught 15 different kinds of fish, a gnome, and a lemon for 170 points. He made 20 trips into space without crashing, for a multiplier of 1.2. 110 + 170 =280 x 1.2 = 336 for his total score.

Ch-Ch-Changes
The team does not want to edit and make changes to the ruleset once this event goes live, but we may have to. If an exploit is brought to our attention or we discover something else we reserve the right to ask affected players to redo their effort.

Have Questions?
Please think hard before you ask in the challenge thread because it may be strategy. What you may consider an innocent question could cause another player to go — “Oh, I did not think of doing that.” It’s always safer to PM everyone on the team (Metro, ratchie, LenaLJ, Trip, and MarianT) for clarifications. Thanks.

And the Winner is...
After this event has closed everyone is encouraged to discuss how they approached the event, but the winner especially is expected to do so in detail.

Unless Marian feels otherwise, there is no restriction in the rules as to where you need to fish.

Bathrobe and slippers maybe?

Do we have to keep the unique items or can we sell them?

You can definitely sell them, but in case the team has any questions concerning someone's score, it would be best to jot down what each item was.

Certain items can be both caught while fishing and acquired while on space missions (cowplant berries and upgrade parts, for instance). Do these count as unique to both fishing and space missions or do we only count them once by either method of collection?

You don't need to post the items -- just the number. But keep your list for when you post strategy.

Thanks a lot for letting me know, Marian :).  I will keep my list.
When Astro Fish aged up to elder, he had:

Fish Items = 48
48X10 = 480

SA = 0
crashed
CM = 0

Total score = 480 points

Allright

Ford Prefect did better than Arthur Dent in the example above :P
Ford brought home 10 aliens, 4 space rocks and 3 other items from his travels for 170 points.
He caught 33 different fish and 13 other items for 460 points.
He went on 74 Space adventures without crashing for a multiplier of 1.74.

170 + 460 = 630 points.
630 x 1.74 = 1096,2 points in total

Thanks again for the fun challenge. The hitchhicker's reference made it extra fun  ;D

35 fish, 10 aliens, 4 space rocks, and 23 other unique items for a total of 72 items.
He completed 199 space missions safely for a multiplier of 2.99.

720 X 2.99= 2152.8 total points.

My astronaut caught 28 fish, 12 miscellaneous items, and 13 space rocks and aliens for a total of 53.  He had 89 safe landings.

53 x 10 = 530
multiplier 1.89

530 x 1.89 = 1001.

This was a really fun challenge for me.  Thank you team.

The astronaut career is optional. If your Sim is sent on a space mission at work, you are able to count any unique item brought back from a mission.

At the risk of sounding dense, I need to ask. Is the scenario described in the quote above what you mean by a "CM/Career Mission"?

Got a bit repetitive on last few adult sim days but was fun though.

29 fish & unique items from fishing; 17 space rocks, aliens and unique items off exploring space activity and 129 safely completed space travel; multiplier 2.29.

460 * 2.29 = 1053

Have fun & kindly regards all. :)

190 + 440= 630

131 successful missions = 2.31

Strongarm caught 32 unique fish, 18 unique items, and had 69 safe landings.

This is my first actual challenge I have done but I wish I practiced first. Also I'm a little unsure of how to do the multiplier because everyones math seems to be a little different.

Sullivan Harp caught 21 unique kinds of fish as well as 9 unique items of pond junk. While Sullivan was out adventuring space, he brought back 8 different aliens, all 4 types of space rock, as well as 3 random pieces of space junk. (45x10=450)

He also ventured into space and successfully returned 79 times.

She has completed 175 successful missions.

640x2.75 = 1760

Funny thing :  on the test run I had a slightly better score :)

Cheers!

She completed 247 space missions, for a multiplier of 3.47
Total score: 2186

Edited previous 3.27 multiplier to correct 3.47

Oh, my gosh, GlazeyLady...great score. That's an amazing number of missions you pulled off. Well done. You're really setting the bar high this year. :)

EDIT -- GlazeyLady I am coming up with 2060 for your score -- 630 X 3.27. Am I missing something?

The multiplier should be 3.47, not 3.27, so 2186 is correct.

My girl Star finished with ---

16 space rocks, aliens, and unique items from space = 160

28 fish and unique items = 280

96 safe landings from space

160 + 280 = 440 * 1.96  with final score of 862

@reggikko  @sdhoey  @Metropolis Man   Thanks for checking my math - I copied that incorrectly from my spreadsheet.  I edited my original post to fix it.

My sim fished and found 64 Unique items, and went savely into space 225 times

Which brings the score to:
64*10=640
225*0,01+1=3,25
640*3,25=2080

My basic strategy was straightforward. I fished for all of the fish, including those in Granite Falls. I also fished specific areas for non-fish items. In my regular game, my Sims spend a lot of time fishing, so I already knew where to fish for specific items. For example, in Granite Falls, you can fish for parsley, sage, the tarp shower, and the tent. The stream at the back of Magnolia Blossom Park has dragonfruit and voodoo dolls (which I didn't get) and the area all the way to the rear of Desert Bloom Park has violins (which I did get). I missed getting a rose (little stream at the front of Desert Bloom) because I forgot and for some reason, Forgotten Hollow was completely off my radar. I realized later that I could have gotten a plasma fruit and batfish there. I also did not manage to get the gramophone stereo in Forgotten Grotto.

This brings me to my major mistake. I spent time leveling handiness to have access to Forgotten Grotto for the batfish, gramophone, stacking crates, and health potion. That was too much time for too little pay off, especially since I could have gotten batfish in Forgotten Hollow. I also spent a little more than one day in Granite Falls. My time would have been better spent doing more rocket missions. I didn't practice at all for this challenge; maybe if I had I would have realized these strategy errors.

34 points! ARRRGGGHHH! ;)

Regardless, this was a very fun challenge for me. Congratulations to GlazeyLady!

I had really only three key elements to my strategy:
1)  Fish fast.  I allowed one sim-week for fishing.  I targeted specific fishing spots for specific things, but if I didn't get it pretty quick I moved on.  At the end of the week, I went back and tried to get some of the fish/items I hadn't gotten yet, but I stuck strong to the one-week limit.
2)  Take the space mission options most likely to lead to getting items, but once I had all the space rocks and aliens, plus the UFO fruit, I switched to taking whatever option was most likely to end the mission the fastest.
3)  Used clubs to avoid taking time to eat or sleep.

This Site was really helpful: https://levelskip.com/simulation/The-Sims-4-Walkthrough-Guide-to-Exploring-Space

Some of the ways I ended missions quickly were:
Put the ball in the triangle hole - sends you straight home.  :)
Decline the race.  (I really always wanted to race, but saying no got my sim home faster)
Ignore the Populous Toilet Seat and just Go Home.  (Doesn't always work - sometimes you're forced to stay)
Rescue the Pilot (instead of towing the ship) seemed to end quicker.
On the Derelict Vessel, where you can Board the Ship and then go to the Biology Lab or the Geology Lab, and you always get something - instead of boarding, you can Gather Parts and end quickly
Orbiting the moon ends quicker than trying to land on it
On The Green Man scenario, I more often "failed" (meaning the scenario ended sooner) when searching the swamp, so once I had the main items, that's what I chose.

There may be more, but I didn't write them down and that's what I remember.

These challenges that involve choosing between getting more of something or increasing the multiplier always intrigue me - trying to figure out which is the most important to do.  A lot of the time I waffle back and forth.  But with this one I made a plan and stuck to it - I think it was easier to stick to because it was a pretty straightforward challenge.  But it did get really boring for me - three sim weeks of space mission after space mission with some "Rally the Troops', baths, and quick chats to keep needs up.

Indeed. I think it's a big reason why we're seeing decent participation this year. Everyone is busy, myself included, and has their hands in lots of stuff, so these challenges need to be knocked out quickly.
