Rules: Rags To Riches - Vet
« on: November 10, 2017, 03:44:19 PM »
Rags to Riches -Vet.
A challenge that has been recreated so many times. Here’s my Cats and Dogs take on it.

Goals
To have a fully functioning veterinarian clinic with maximum staff and all perks purchased** and a 5 star rating
To have a house on a separate lot worth $350,000
Complete the Mansion Baron, Fabulously Wealthy and Friend of the Animals Aspirations
Max Vet, Charisma, Handiness and Training skills
Become Companions with your pet
To have fun and explore the new content.

World Set Up
You need:
One empty residential lot in any world
One empty lot in Brindleton Bay for your vet clinic
Fill Empty Homes, or not, up to you.

Lot Traits
This is up to the player. Using a lot trait such as Cursed could potentially make your challenge a little harder, using a lot trait such as Training Ground will make your challenge a lot easier. Using lot traits are a good way of manipulating the difficulty level of your challenge.

Aging Settings
On or off up to you. I hate seeing my sims die so I’ll be playing with age on for my played household but will be using Potions Of Youth to keep my sim a YA and vet treats to keep my pets age the same too.
The Potions of Youth and any vet treats etc must be earned by your sim, no cheats so if you don’t have enough points and it’s your sims birthday, you just lucked out.

Money Rules:

Allowed Methods of Wealth Accumulation
Veterinarian Clinic
Gathering any wild harvestables in any world
Breeding frogs
Fishing
DJing (ha! Good luck with that one)
Dig sites in any world, including feathers in Brindleton Bay
Using your pet to find/dig/hunt/discover items/perform tricks for tips

Banned Methods of Money Accumulation
Inviting other sims to join your household, painting, writing, handiness, charisma, busking on any instrument, karaoke competitions, festival competitions, any club activities, selling any paintings off easels, gardening (so you may plant most plants and evolve and harvest these etc but the produce can never be sold. Exception is the Plasma Plant which can never be planted, only harvested), rummaging for spare parts, selling CL posters, snow globes etc. I could go on but basically no making money from anything but methods on the allowed list!

Game Play

Start a new game.
Create a young adult sim (vampires and aliens ok) and one dog or cat. This might be a new sim from CAS or from cloning. Your pet may be a puppy or kitten but be aware that they take a bit more caring. Any traits/aspirations.

Move your sim and their pet onto an empty residential lot. Pause your game and buy one pet bowl. Check to see if your sim has earbuds in their inventory, if they do place those in the world and then go into buy mode and sell them.
You may cheat the needs of the household to max as sometimes even new sims needs are depleted on entering the game.
Next purchase your veterinarian clinic lot ‘Sporting Space’ in Sable Square, Brindleton Bay. You will slowly build up over time as your sim makes the money. Purchase this as ‘unfurnished’ and the trees on the lot can never be sold. Purchased as ‘bulldozed’ and you can always add trees/landscaping later.

Go back into live mode – leave the venue incomplete and cheat away all your sims funds. (testingcheats on followed by money 0)
Turn all cheats off

By 9am of day 8 (Monday week 2) your sim must open the vets clinic. You’ll need certain items for the lot to be completed and to function as a vets so hopefully you worked hard at money making during this first week.
For the 1st opening the vet clinic must remain open for at least 6 hours. After this shift you may open when and for how long you like but as this is your main way of making money don’t be a slacker! If you have enough money to open earlier in the week on a completed Vet Clinic Lot then go for it.

Moving Money Before You Open Your Vet Clinic
You may move money freely between your household funds and your vet clinic funds. This is so during the very first week of the game the funds your sim and their dog makes is able to go towards buying the items necessary for opening a vet clinic.

Moving Money After You Open Your Vet Clinic
Moving Money is only one-way. Vet Clinic > Household.

After the first Week or Once you have Opened the Vets Clinic for the 1st Time:
You must manage your household and retail funds carefully. At the end of each vet clinic shift you must move half the money earned into the household fund. The goal is to always have both funds with equal amounts of money in them.
You want to buy something for the vet clinic but don’t have enough money? Tough, you’re not allowed to ever move any household funds into the business.
You want to build another room onto your house and don’t have enough money? Tough, you’re never allowed to move sums of money over to the household funds apart from half the earnings of each days vet work.

Use of Other Lots
Community Lots. Your sim can shower, use the bathroom, eat free food already cooked and nap on a bench if they need to. No cooking until your sim owns their own means of cooking at home. Can listen to music, use the bubble blower, play chess and all those other items that are placed on a community lot/venue by Maxis or yourself. Just be aware of not placing too many skilling items as this will make your game play much easier and may basically take away much of the challenge.

Other Sims Residential Lots Your sim may chat and eat food if the non-controlled townie sim makes any. No cooking or bathing for your sim or their pet on residential lots apart from your own. If the house has skilling items you can use them but try to keep it ‘life like’ after all, it would be pretty weird to visit a friend in real life and then spend the next 18 hours playing chess or talking to yourself in their mirror.

The exception to all of this is that if your own sim already has an item on their home lot then they can use it anywhere else. Think of it as being ‘unlocked’ by purchasing and placing it on the home lot so therefore it is now in the ‘free to use anywhere/anyhow’ category.

Aspirations
Any aspiration can be completed or partially completed during the challenge. Remember no money can be made from certain skills though so you may need to make a large storage basement if you plan on completing aspirations like the Painter Extraordinaire.
Avoid aspirations requirements that require you to make money in banned ways i.e. the later levels of the Bestselling Author and Musical Genius

Traits
Any traits including any gained from completing aspirations are allowed.

Potions
As long as they are earned by the sim who is going to drink them, all are allowed

Traveling to Granite Falls
Allowed

Clubs
Any/all type of clubs allowed. No money is allowed to be made through any club interaction.
All club meetings must be ended before opening the vet clinic.

For added challenge:
No club skill boosts to charisma or handiness, no using the Club Networked boost or Rally The troops interaction. (Highly recommended.)

Cheats
Apart from set up, no cheats at all for your sims and pets unless for some reason you need to reset a sim/pet or to cheat away money from moving in a spouse (See Aging On Option below for more details on spouses etc.)
However MOO and sizing up/down and bb.moveobjects on are all allowed for building.

CC/Mods
Knock yourself out, go to town and have fun just don’t use mods that will make your game play easier, the more difficult the game play the better.

Adopting Animals
Sure, the more the merrier, as long as your sim has the money to purchase all items needed for their happy life.
Once any pet is added to the household it must remain until the pet dies a natural death (old age).
No selling unwanted pets.
Your pet ran away and came back pregnant? Congratulations, you just gained some new pets for your household.
For every pet removed due to neglect subtract $5000 simoleons from your retail and household accounts. You bad person you... yep, I’m judging you  :P

Added Challenges - Vampire
If your sim is a vampire they may only drink from plasma packs made from the animals they treat in their vet clinic. They may not drink from their own pets or from any other sim. (The exception being the free plasma packs your vamp will get from Vlad's initial phone call, your sim may sell or use these.)
They can also drink Plasma Fruit, only allowed 10 in their inventory/fridge/lot at any one time.
No planting of plasma trees on home lot allowed
Must also max Vampire Lore Skill and have purchased all 3 levels of sun immunity.

Age On Option
So you’re playing the long game. Your sim better get married and have one child to continue the challenge. The spouse can earn no money at all, ever. In fact, you even must cheat away any money they bring into the house, so you better take note of the household funds before inviting them to move in.
Moving the spouse in is not necessary but marriage is. So, it is perfectly ok to have the spouse outside the household and move the toddler in using Manage Households menu.
Your sims child can earn no money until they become a teen and only then if they have had an A at School and at High School and have maxed 2 adult skills and 2 child skills and 1 child aspiration.

Final Thoughts
Keep track of your vet clinics money before each shift, you’ll need to transfer half the days profits to your household account when you close the clinic and it is easy to lose track of how much you have earned.

Failing but enjoying the game play? Cheat yourself just enough money - hey, this is about having fun and enjoying the new content. No need to ‘fail’ a for-fun challenge when you’re having the time of your life, right? I won’t judge, promise.   You could always write this sum down and pretend it’s a loan and pay it back through cheating it away again when your sim makes some more money.

** Depending on how you wish to play you may not want to purchase all the vet perks so as an alternative you may just accumulated enough perk points to buy all the perks. Or a combination of buying some and enough accumulated perk points to buy the rest.

Carl's guide to Running a Vet Clinic

*Edited to Add: Currently there is a bug with the vet clinic that occurs when you have your household pets with your sim at the clinic. Your vet sim will not be paid for the work they do. This is 'fixed' by not having your pet with you at the clinic.
This has a rather unfortunate negative effect on this challenge really as the whole point is that your sim and their pet are always together. Until there is a developers fix all you can do is leave your sims pet on the home lot and then travel to be together as soon as the clinic closes each day.

Playalot, you did a really great job on this challenge! It seems extremely difficult--my pet and I will probably die of starvation, lol.

I wish there were some way to segue my runaway teen to this challenge. :D

Thank you. It is pretty challenge for some time!  :)  8) Your pet will be ok re:starvation as luckily they can only die of old age. I'm not quite what happens if you don't/can't feed them but I imagine it is a bit like toddlers where some sort of food will magically appear for them to eat. (FYI toddlers magic up a drink.) Or maybe at that point they get taken away from neglect! <<< This!

If you are unable to feed a pet for a length of time your pet will be taken away.

When you say we can "dig" do you mean both the human sites, as well as sending the animal out to "hunt"?  Or are those considered two different things?

Both a sim digging and anything an animal finds. I'll add to the rules to make it more explicit.

I've been reading this challenge's rules everyday for a few days now. It just seems so hard!!!
The priority really seems to be on "gitting gud" with the vet clinic.

So is the starting sim cursed to lead a life of eternal solitude (except for pets, of course)?

@oshizu  I don't think it is too difficult once you've got the vet clinic running with some perks. I've played through a portion of this but will be completing (attempting!) this soon. Probably not doing a full story, more like updates I think, so that I can concentrate on playing rather than story telling.  :)

Pretty much adding a sim (spouse) would just make it easier as even though they can't add any money to the household they can clean and cook etc. It's not banned per say... I mean technically you can move in a spouse, just that you don't have too.

It is a bit confusing in the rules but essentially if you have aging on because you want to play a more traditional long term rags to riches challenge where perhaps generation 2 or 3 are the ones to complete the challenge then you can move in a spouse for each generation. The caveat is that you must cheat away any bonus money that a spouse brings with them. I know some people like to play as if it a check list and so as long as the main sim/the 1st gen/or the 2nd gen have completed something off the check list then it counts. I guess if you are playing this way, all descendants have to be a vet and take over the vet clinic as they come of age (Young Adult). I was really trying to get away from this sort of approach as it has been done this way often, but still allow it in the options for those who like this style.  :)

The one thing you can not do is just invite random sims into the house, it must be a spouse and only one spouse in each vet-sims life time.

Can you clarify two things?

1. You say no rummaging for spare parts. Some of the dirt piles have spare parts. Are we allowed to sell those?
2. I'm confused by this particular rule: Moving Money is only one-way. Retail > Household until you have opened the vet clinic for the 1st time. Until then you may move money both ways. Does this mean money cannot be moved both ways until you have the vet clinic or that you can't move it both ways after you have the vet clinic.

Thanks!

No rummaging for spare part means no rummaging in rubbish piles. Digging is different, anything your sim and their pet finds from dig sites are a legal source of money.

No moving money both ways after you have opened a vet clinic. Once you open a vet clinic you may only move money from the Vet Clinic to your household and only half of every days earnings.

Okay, that helps. You may want to clarify the language in the rules about moving the money.

Looking forward to this challenge!

Currently there is a bug that effects the vet clinic. See edit (in bold text) to rules post above for details.

Wow, that is so unfortunate!!!
Thank you so much for letting us know so quickly. It would be a real bummer to finally have enough $ to set up a clinic, only to find out about the bug!

Crossing my fingers that it's fixed quickly. Meanwhile, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread. :D

Three more questions:

1. After the clinic opens, can we continue to earn money in the approved for ways?
2. Can we live in the clinic? (with the understanding that at some point, we need to build the house on the residential lot).
3. Simstagraming? Allowed?

1. Yes
2. Yes
3. Don't know, haven't played around with this feature yet as it seemed silly to me. Does it earn sims any money? @commasplice If it earns your pet or your sim money or rewards then the answer will be no.

It basically gives your sim the photography skill, earns your pet followers, and results in photos of your pet (which you can choose to sell or not).

Just had a quick play around with it, your pet can get rewards with pet beds and feeders etc so that makes it a banned way to make money.

However, with all my challenges you are free to change them to fit your play style.  :)

Am I good if my sim keeps the objects made with the woodworking table but does not sell them?

Yes, that is fine.  :) Remember that any item on the home lot or in your sims inventory will add to the bills though which in some ways could be a good thing as larger bills will increase the difficulty level slightly.

Since one of our requirements will be to have our home lot worth $350,000, I imagine we eventually cannot avoid the high bills.

Fortunately, the worth of the home lot and the worth of the vet clinic are separately calculated.
Or are our weekly bills based on the combined worth of both lots?

@commasplice
Please write it up! :D
I would love to read the story (or even simply the highlights) of your journey!

Depends where you are at the time of the bill being calculated. If your sim is on the vet clinic then potentially that lot will be taken into consideration too. I love that having items in the inventory (personal or home) make bills larger. When I play tested this I threw a few expensive violins in there before removing all the money just to add that little bit extra difficulty.

I'm not sure whether the game still works this way, but @reggikko figured out that our bills increased if we weren't on the home lot when the bills were delivered.

As you already know, expensive violins placed on the lot itself will increase the home worth, but not when they're in the family inventory.
You leave them in family inventory to boost your bills but to increase the difficulty of reaching $350k home worth? o.O

Bills are calculated at the same time each sim week and depending where your sim is effects the bill. So if your sim is on another lot (apart from their home lot) unfortunately the game calculates that lot as part of the bill percentage. So leaving any item in a sims personal inventory or home inventory will add to the bill amount.

The bill calculation error has been a round for a very long time, almost since the game launched actually. But, that being said, I like it as bills are far too low in TS4 anyway.  :)

But @oshizu  , the game is so easy! You know it is! You're one of the better strategic players and anything that can add to the difficulty only adds to the enjoyment of a challenge. lol My first draft of this challenge involved leaving quite a few expensive items in the household inventory for the very reason of making bills more realistic!  ;D And playing with a vamp initially increases the difficulty too. It's fun!

@reggikko  you're a strategic player too. You'd find this challenge easy.

Dang it all, now you guys are making me desperate to play it, I wish that silly vet bug wasn't around. Grr!

I actually think it's harder not to have my sim's pet on the lot. The dog seems miserable. My sim is miserable too. It's kind of like it was harder for the sim in the runaway teen challenge to go to school.

Yes, it makes the pet basically uncared for as you can't direct them to look after themselves. I guess that becomes a challenge in it's own right. I really just wanted to play it with my sim and their pet being together 24/7. Are you calling your sims pet to the vet clinic lot as soon as the vet clinic closes each day @commasplice  ? Or do you take your sim back to the home lot?

I tried to have my sim and her pet at the clinic initially, but like you said, there's a bug. The clinic is still kind of sketchy with no amenities, although we finally added windows and paint and lights so I've just basically been sending my sim back to her house as soon as she closes it.

I don't get why it's working for the Sim Supply and not for me. On his videos, he's got his sim and pets living on the same lot as the clinic and he's making bank for the clinic.

This bug only seems to effect certain saves, a lot of the bugs happen this way. In my 1st test save I did not get this bug. 2nd test save I did which is when I went researching to see what on earth was going on. Sometimes doing a game repair fixes it, other times it doesn't. Such an annoyance.

Are you writing a story @commasplice  ? Or even just screenshot updates?

@Playalot

Grr!

Gotta give credit where credit's due! I learned so much from reading your Hollingsworth Dynasty!!!  *needs an emote for a bouquet of expensive roses
You're right, though, the game's gotten a lot easier. For the Teen Runaway Challenge, I didn't use clubs and got to watch my sim eat and sleep for the first time since forever! LOL!

I can't decide how I want to play your challenge...part of me would like to chill. You know, get a utility sim--I mean, a partner--to cook, clean, and feed/bathe the dog, while writing a silly story.
The second time around, I'll go spartan mode, hehe.

@commasplice
Yay! I'm looking forward to your write-up! I love meeting other simmers' sims! <3  ;D
Have you been trying to avoid that glitch by leaving your dog at home? Awwww.

Bookmarking for a future challenge, as I'm just starting to dabble in them; and this one does seem more difficult than newbie ones I've toyed with.  But I do love the rags-to-riches idea.

Btw, bonus points to you for using the word "busking" so casually (in the rules, forbidden money-making efforts). ;D

Speaking of busking, it appears that once your pet is trained, you can have him perform tricks in public and possibly get tips. Guessing not allowed?

Oh this is new to me. I've had a fully trained pet perform tricks but not had any tips... No I say we allow this one as it is a pet centered option and takes serious sim-time to get a dog fully trained. I'll add it to the rules -thanks! @commasplice

@Playalot

I have a few more questions now that I've actually started:
Quote
Remember no money can be made from certain skills though so you may need to make a large storage basement if you plan on completing aspirations like the Painter Extraordinaire.
Question #1: You imply that Painter Extraordinaire is an acceptable aspiration.
Does that mean we're allowed to do the "Sell 3 Paintings" goal as long as we use the money cheat to subtract the money we earned from selling them?
Paintings are a great way to boost home worth...

Question #2: Any restrictions on downloading community lots created by Maxis or MaxisCreator_01?

All aspirations are acceptable but making money from anything but the allowed methods is not. As usual if you want to mold the rules to include selling those 3 first paintings go ahead. (*cough* That is code for 'I actually forgot about those 1st 3 that need selling'.)

No restrictions per say about changing lots or downloading lots but I will say that leaving the world exactly as is makes it harder. I have my own versions of made-over Maxis lots that I like to use but these lots don't actually add any items that would make the process of skilling or making money any easier.

So...as always: change what you see fit to make your challenge yours and have fun!  :)

Thank you for responding so quickly.
Okay, the Painter Extraordinaire is out but our sims can still paint if we wish. Got it.

Regarding community lots, I wasn't thinking of editing community lots, but of adding a spa, a restaurant or two, and the toddler park to my simverse.

Oh for sure, I add toddler parks, spas etc etc too. It takes ages to add everything now that we have so many packs. One of the down-sides to dlc!

@Playalot

Two questions about transferring the vet clinic's profits to household funds:

Quote
Keep track of your vet clinics money before each shift, you’ll need to transfer half the days profits to your household account when you close the clinic and it is easy to lose track of how much you have earned.

Question 1: Do we simply transfer 50% of the "Net Profits" value in the Finances pop-up  that appears when we close the clinic?
Or do treats sales not get included in the "Treatments" figure?

Question 2: When you say "profits," do we subtract the cost of buying new equipment?
For example, if I make $3,000 in net profit then buy a second exam table, how much do I transfer to my home?
(A) $1,500 ($3,000 / 2)
or
(B) $250 ($3000-$2500=$500 / 2)

I've been using the Net Profits figure everyday so far, but I just want to confirm I'm doing this right since I have way more money at home than at the clinic. ;D

Net profit and any new vet clinic equipment must be purchased after the 50% has gone through to the residential lot account.

Thank you for the confirmation, Playalot!
On the day that I bought a second exam table during the shift, I made sure first that I'd be able to send 50% of Net Profit by the end of the shift.
It was very tight and I agree that waiting until the work day ends is a safer bet.
