The Bucket List Challenge: Whims before Grim

The Bucket List Challenge: Whims before Grim

Goal
Your Sims have worked hard all their lives. Now that they've reached their golden years, it's time to relax and do only what they want to. How many of their last wishes can they fulfill before the Reaper arrives?

General Challenge Rules
The General Challenge Rules always apply.

Specific Challenge Rules
  • In CAS, create two Elder Human or Alien Sims.
  • You are allowed to use the Buydebug cheat to purchase a satellite to prevent abductions.
  • No adding to the household.
  • No cancelling Whims.
  • No extending the Elder life stage via any means.
  • The challenge ends when your two Sims are close to meeting Grim on their last day. Stop the game on Friday at 7 AM.

Scoring

Whims. On your Sims' last Elder day (this will be a Friday) pause the game at 7 AM. Press the Simology tab (Y) and then click the Stats button at the top right. Scroll down to Total Whims Completed -- add the numbers together for both Sims to get your score.

Traits. Go back to the Simology tab (Y) and count all traits for both Sims (including both Sims' initial 4 traits). Give yourself 10 puts for every trait.

Total. Just add your total Whims completed between your two Sims and their Traits score for your Total.

Example: On your last day at 7 AM you pause your game and look at the stats button for your first Sim and jot down 256 Total Whims completed. You also count 9 different traits for your first Sim.

For your second Sim, you note 343 Total Completed Whims and 12 different traits.

Whims = 256 + 343 = 599

Traits = (9 + 12) X 10 = 210

Total = 599 + 210 = 809

Spreadsheet: To help keep you organized find the spreadsheet Here

Ch-Ch-Changes
The team does not want to edit and make changes to the ruleset once this event goes live, but we may have to. If an exploit is brought to our attention or we discover something else we reserve the right to ask affected players to redo their effort.

Have Questions?
Please think hard before you ask in the challenge thread because it may be strategy. What you may consider an innocent question could cause another player to go — “oh, I did not think of doing that.” It’s always safer to PM everyone on the team (Metro, sdhoey, LenaLJ, and MarianT) for clarifications. Thanks.

And the Winner is...
After this event has closed everyone is encouraged to discuss how they approached the event, but the winner especially is expected to do so in detail.

Hey @Metropolis Man guess whose back?!  ;) I've been taking a break from Tournament Challenges and Sims in general because life is has been pretty darn full on, but I'm looking forward to participating in this challenge so I want to check a couple of little things  before I get around to practicing.  :)

No adding to the household.
No cancelling Whims.

Does no adding to the household include pets? About not canceling whims, is that just whims that have been pinned or all whims in general?

Hey, Rainbow Dash! :) Pets occupy a slot, so yes, no pets too. On the whims question...no canceling any whims in general.

I'm actually looking forward to this one, it reminds of the Elder Scrolls challenge and that was a lot of fun. :) I don't what it is exactly, but somehow using Elders in these challenges is quite entertaining, I wonder if anyone else finds that is the case for them too?  :-\

(Now I think about it might be the whole racing against the clock thing, those challenges always seem more exciting to me).

Hi everyone,

err... about not cancelling whims - has anyone ever noticed how the Sims 4 whims system is faulty, as in showing whims that cannot be fulfilled?
For instance: while at home, your sim might have the whim to paint on an easle, but when at someone else's house or a community lot, the easle there is not recognized as such, so the only whim coming up is "buy an easle" - which you can't do at someone else's home, and doesn't fulfill the whim at a community lot.
Especially messed up are the whims popping up when energized, as while at home sims will wish to buy a, let's say punching bag, and the minute they got it, they want to use a punching bag at the gym. Naturally, once you arrive at the gym, they want to buy a punchig bag again. It's driving me nuts.
(If you have any contact in EA; PLEASE do something about that.) :D

So, I guess my question concerning the challenge is this: what about whims that truly (by default) cannot be fulfilled, not because of the player, but because of the game - are we allowed to cancel those? And it is ok to pin whims, right?

@Nomac -- yeah, I agree. Some Whims are kind of botched. But, we all have to deal with it, so it's not like anyone has an unfair advantage. And yes, pinning Whims is fine.

I think the team felt the following was obvious, so we did not originally did not make it a rule, but we have gotten several questions, so it's now a rule...

  • No extending the Elder life stage via any means.

Whims = 145 + 156 = 301

Traits = (20 + 21) X 10 = 410

Total = 711

I think there's a mistake in the spreadsheet... it doesn't multiply the traits by 10... unless I'm missing something.

Oh, thank goodness the two components seem balanced with each other. I was guessing when I gave traits a value of 10. Grats on finishing up quickly. Hopefully, Lena will look into the spreadsheet soon.

Hi,
 I finished this one nice and quickly, although I haven't really done all that well.  It was a lovely change of pace to the last one.  The most difficult thing was reminding myself not to cancel the whims, I'm so used to do doing that.

Ian had 93 whims and 12 traits, Pearl had 74 whims and 12 traits.  That's 176 =240 for a score of 407.

Is this only five days? I assumed it was not the first friday that it ended because my elders bars were only half full then. Is it the first friday or the friday when the bars are full?

Hello nice people. :)
This was a great challenge. I am a noob, so please excuse my contingent cluelessness.

My duo Cliff Hanger and Clear Danger had just finished with:
22 + 22 traits
143 + 135 whims

If I am right - 718 points.

Still waiting for some of the best players to come up with their scores. :o

Came into this one a little late as I just found the forums via a Google search for a bucket list challenge but going to try nonetheless.
Playing on console since my pc broke down last year.
Been simming for 17 years now, so I hope I can get a respectable score here.

So, super coincidental that I decided to do this challenge today. I like to have stories behind my sims, and today marks the 20 and 10 year anniversary of my grandfather and grandmother's deaths respectively; they both were robbed of their last year's from Dementia so for this challenge, both of my sims were inspired by them, and what they could've had.
Jeanne got 68 whims and 8 traits
Herbert got 69 whims and 7 traits
For a total of 287 points. Not as bad as I thought I'd do.
This was a fun challenge. I love the quick challenge as I get bored pretty quick.
I wish I would've found this forum sooner, some of the previous challenges looked super fun and since I'm playing on console I can't do the next one  :'(
Also, thanks for the greetings everyone! Looking forward to the next challenge.

All right, that's me done.
Only started yesterday due to work and good weather; must say I'm rather bummed they are already marked for death today... I'm used to playing on long life setting, so I'm afraid I squandered my (well, really their) time a bit - despite the practice round.
For me, like @workingmum8, not cancelling whims was the biggest challenge, and a real pain at times. It was a lot of fun, though!

If you've never seen it, The Bucket List is a great movie with Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson. I named my two Sims after the movies' lead characters, Edward Cole and Carter Chambers.

Whims -- 165 + 180 = 345
Traits -- 12 + 13 = 25 X 10 = 250

Total -- 354 + 250 = 595

Ugh, I did terrible in this one, I had a game breaking bug in this challenge and spend two days trying to fix it and get my game working again, so I lost some time and had to rush this.  >:(

Rose Twilight earned 20 traits and completed 83 whims

Grayson Twilight earned 19 traits and 85 whims.

That's a total of 558, I think, not great at adding these things so hopefully that's right.

Not at all happy with my results, I could have done better but I've just lost interest in the Sims lately and have been putting this off, so it's kind of my own fault.

For the record I hate the Twilight movies, I gave them that last name because they are both in their twilight years and rose and gray are two of the colours you can see in a sunset.  :)

While I'm glad this one was much shorter than the previous one...I really, really sucked at it. I'm just submitting a score for the overall scorings.
My score:
Jovan Buckley: 57 whims + 7 traits
Kali Goth: 41 whims + 8 traits

Total: 248

Have you considered having a beginner's division?

Have you considered having a beginner's division?

Never really have. How would that even work? There's one World Ranking with everyone lumped into it. Technically after your first couple events can anyone call themselves a beginner? But, it's a valid question. A brand new player who has never entered a competition going up against the likes of the Lenas and GlazeyLadys -- wow...kind of a daunting task. :) And part of the problem is there have been plenty of brand new players who have never played an event before that end up wiping the competition. They come out guns blazing and clearly know the ins and outs and all the tricks -- they just have never done a forum challenge before.

Whims: 72 + 101 = 173
Traits: 14 + 14 = 28 x 10 = 280
Total: 453

This one was a welcome relief after the last stressful careers challenge.

I'm not really sure, but plenty of competitions have divisions based on skill level. After the first year of participating, the better players would be bumped into a higher division. As for the World Rankings...since they're based on Participation and Wins, I'm not sure there would be much difference unless there is a great discrepancy between the number of entrants in each division.

Frank and Marie Whimsy have been pretty busy in their last days.  Frank finished with 88 whims and 32 traits, while Marie completed 99 whims with 33 traits.

99+88 = 187
(32+33) * 10 = 650

Total = 837

This event is now closed. Great job, everybody. This was a fun one, and as some mentioned when they posted their scores, much simpler than the last careers event. Grats to our champion, GlazeyLady. Everyone is now free to share their approach.

1st thing I did was have them join the Good Timers, since it's an open invite club that has rally the troops, meaning they never had to eat, sleep, or potty, leaving more time to focus on whims. I also gave them the soulmate aspiration, as it's easy to complete in less than a week, getting them a free traits and lots of points to buy more traits. I also spent some time having them eat Pho to develop Spice Hound and Chopstick Savvy. I had them move into 930 Medina since it was the nicest apt. they could buy. When they got whims to get jobs, I had 'em join CL jobs so they could work from home. In hindsight I wish I'd given them Family Oriented since that trait's constant whims to buy toys are cheap, easy, and timeless to complete.

Frank and Marie Whimsy moved into a cheap, unfurnished apartment.  They bought a wishing well, a desk, a chair and a computer.  Both wished for skills as often as possible throughout the challenge.  Right after his first wish, Frank searched the computer for vampire information and then purchased and read the first volume of the vampire encyclopedias.  Meanwhile, Marie changed her aspiration to Leader of the Pack, joined The Good Timers, started an event at the apartment, made friends with Bjorn, and convinced him to step down as leader.  She then added socialization actions to the club activities, changed her aspiration to City Native, and introduced herself to Arun Bheeda.  She switched to Friend of the World, and introduced herself to the other neighbors who made up the Welcome Wagon.

When Frank reached level 4 in Vampire Lore, he bought an aquarium, filled it with guppies, then moved them to his inventory, turned them into plasma packs, and sold them for a profit.  He repeated that many, many times, to complete the Fabulously Wealthy aspiration.  Then he continued creating plasma packs, but I transferred them to Marie so she could sell them, also completing the Fabulously Wealthy aspiration.  They continued selling plasma packs until they had over $400,000.

They both purchased the Incredibly Friendly reward, and had the Popular Club perk.  They focused on the social aspiration tasks; mostly keeping Friend of the World as the aspiration - just switching to City Native and Leader of the Pack to complete specific tasks.  This got them whims related to socialization - meeting new people and making new friends.  They traveled around as needed to meet sims in different locations and to make friends with more than 20 sims.  With Incredibly Friendly and the Popular Club perk, they were immediate friends with everyone they met.  Then they moved to Yuma Heights, upgraded as needed to complete Mansion Baron, and immediately moved to Springscape.  They were at this point by around 10 pm on Sunday.

Once in Springscape, they started a group event with just watching TV as the club activity.  Marie switched to the Master Chef Aspiration, got inspired, and cooked 2 group servings of grilled cheese, while Frank worked on the Leader of the Pack aspiration. When they had enough points, they added the 7th and 8th club members.  When they got to 1000 points earned, Marie completed Leader of the Pack, and then removed everyone from the club, including herself, leaving Frank as the leader.  Frank added Marie and 6 others to the club, completing Leader of the Pack himself. They both had a whim to add a pool, so they built one, and made swimming a club activity.  As soon as a club member jumped in to swim, they build a wall around the pool, removed the swimmer from the club (to prevent needs from filling from Rally the Troops), and made watching TV the only activity again. Then they locked themselves in the bedroom and ate 3 grilled cheese each to open that aspiration.  They continued eating grilled cheese to fulfill that aspiration, coming out only when they needed to talk to others about grilled cheese in order to continue the aspiration.  When the only tasks left for that aspiration were eat a grilled cheese in space and talk to Grim about grilled cheese, they bought a spaceship, added Rocket Science to club activities, and chose to “Build together”.  They let the club members build the spaceship while they went on dates (Soulmate Aspiration).  They both got the Great Kisser reward, and easily maxed Charisma while completing Soulmate and fulfilling wishes to Kiss Marie, Kiss Frank and Kiss Someone.  Maxing Charisma finished out Friend of the World.  When the spaceship was complete, they each ate a grilled cheese in space.  When Grim came for the swimmer, they both talked to him about grilled cheese.

With both Fortune aspirations, Grilled Cheese, Soulmate, Leader of the Pack, and Friend of the World complete, they both worked on Chief of Mischief.  They both completed that early on Thursday, and then moved to Sandtrap Flat, which they bulldozed as they moved in.  I chose that lot because a lot of people walk by, and I was hoping for a lot of social whims.  I bulldozed it to try to get whims to buy things.

Frank got a whim right away to buy a stove, and then started getting cooking whims, so I switched his aspiration to Master Chef to get some points from that and to hopefully spawn more cooking whims. I don’t know if that was the best choice because he was only 1 whim behind Marie when they moved in, but finished with 11 whims less - the cooking whims take longer to complete than the “buy this” and social whims.  He also got a whim to buy a cooking station, and then one to eat and learn an experimental dish.  So he hired Mila Munch as a chef, ordered an experimental dish from her, and ate it to meet that whim.  Marie got a whim to buy a bar, so I changed her aspiration to Master Mixologist and got some points through that aspiration and some whims related to it.  She got three whims in a row to make a drink, and filled all three pouring water into a glass.  The last day was about fulfilling as many whims as possible.

They used club points to boost Charisma, Mischief, and Cooking, and they used lot traits of Convivial, Romantic, and Homey.

Starting traits for both sims were Cheerful, Good, Insider and Quick Learner.  Aspiration traits for both were Beloved, Companion, Melt Master, Natural Leader, Shrewd, Thrifty, and Tormentor.  Purchased rewards for both were Always Welcome, Creative Visionary, Entrepreneurial, Free Services, Frugal, Great Kisser, Great Storyteller, Gym Rat, Incredibly Friendly, Independent, Marketable, Mentor, Morning Sim, Night Owl, Observant, Savant, Shameless, Speed Cleaner, Speed Reader, Steel Bladder, and Stoves and Grills Master. In addition, Marie also purchased Beguiling.

Brilliant. I remember another event where I intentionally did the "bear in the woods" living situation for my Sim just for this reason -- whims to buy stuff. Then, you do the sneaky trick of selling what you just bought to force the game to fire the whim again.

Good job @GlazeyLady  I really didn't have much of a strategy.  Until early Wednesday morning, I was just rotating between my two sims completing whim after whim.  They just had their own club between the two of them.  When I looked at the scores, I realized that I should focus on aspirations more, so they both completed soulmate and friend of the world.  The whole time I was switching out aspirations to get as many points as they could get with the stuff they were doing anyway.  So, yeah, was happy I got this done though yesterday.  It was only a 5 day challenge, but was a long 5 days because of all of the pausing and micromanagement.

Exactly. :) Or you keep rebuilding and bulldozing the coveted 1x1 swimming pool (otherwise an annoying whim, but sort of golden for this challenge).

A couple of other things I forgot to mention:
  • When working on Chief of Mischief and needing Sims to dislike your sim, but your sim is Incredibly Friendly, use Rude Introduction to prevent starting at high friendship
  • When working on the Grilled Cheese aspiration, your sim has to eat 3 full servings to unlock the aspiration but after that, you can fulfill the "Eat x # Grilled Cheese" by having your sim eat a bite, cancel, eat another bite, cancel, etc. Each time the sim starts to eat, it counts towards the total.

@GlazeyLady @christinal3106 Congratulations, some great min-maxing (not sure if that`s a word) skills on your part.

I thought after completing just three aspirations for both Sims (did LOTP, FOTW and SM, too) I was pretty much done with completable aspirations, and spent the last two days just focusing on whims, while mining other aspirations for easy points (completed the first two tiers of FW, MChef and MMix; also bought kids` stuff for $1000 - things like that).

As for whims, apart from the bear in the woods scenario and cycling through aspirations to hopefully trigger new whims, I also utilized resetting club vibes when I got stuck with emotional whims that I could not / did not want to do. Towards the end, that was the only thing I could do, because both my contestants got fixated on 2 nonemotional whims that were impossible to do due to a bug.

I guess my main downfall was not thinking brave enough in terms of how many aspirations can be done in 5 days. Also, I am still learning a lot about the game, thanks to this forum and the guide mainly.

I just discovered this lately and this was the first challenge I have ever done, but it is a gold mine of fun. So great job everyone and a thank you to the team (sorry for probably butchering English here).

Your English is awesome. And Rinkils, you really deserve a special round of applause for doing so well in your virgin event. Well done. I am assuming you'll post a score for the current Major and you'll earn a World Ranking since that event counts as two events.

Yes, I am already practicing for the Major, and let me tell you, I do not expect much from myself, as I have never played with businesses other than retail, but I would like to do it for the fun of it, as much as my baby allows me to. I am also looking forward to watching and learning from the stars of the show, so I will follow, even if I could not find the time to participate.

Reading through the strategies it looks like I accidentally did something good - my sims lived in tents and the lot was almost exclusively filled with Outdoor Retreat stuff, as if they were camping. They too spawned quite a few whims to buy things (which I then sold straight away), but the only reason I did it this way was because I was too lazy to build a house. Looks like laziness served me well for once :P

A better name for laziness to build is parsimony, and should be considered a virtue for performance oriented play. Couple with Loves the outdoors to kill 2 birds with one stone. ;)

Absolutely. I miss Nutella. She was unquestionably on par with the best players and a big proponent of the bear in the woods living method and how it impacted "performance oriented play." No walls = less walking = more doing. Whatever doing that may be for a challenge.

Thank you @SueDenim - I actually got the rocket idea from the 2017 Skills to Pay the Bills Challenge.  I had a club of painters creating art to hang on the wall to boost the lot value, and I had my sim building a rocket, with both painting and rocket science as club activities.  My painters had not been distracted from their painting by anything else, but as soon as I added Rocket Science as a club activity, they were constantly running off to help build the rocket.   And the only way I know to have a conversation with Grim is to kill off a sim; there are lots of ways to do that, but the easiest is swimming in a pool with a wall around it - once you build the wall, you just go on with whatever else you want to do, and it doesn't really take all that long - starving a sim takes much longer and everything else requires more work.  With drowning, you just have to remember not to leave the lot - if you leave the lot, the walled-in swimmer escapes.  But I do find that I can't quite bring myself to kill off the residents - the ones that are always part of a new game.  I had to fill the club with game-generated sims so there was no risk of killing off one of the sims that I "know".  ;)
