Thank you guys. So it sounds to me like the gender of the baby is basically a surprise without the apple or watermelon binging? Like there's no other way to tell if you're going to have a boy or a girl, other than the food most binged on/consumed?

Right.  If you don't eat apples or watermelon, the gender is random.

I didn't want to start a whole new topic, so I thought I'd write it here instead. I've found since the pets patch (or maybe it was the generations one, seeing as I haven't played any family but my dynasty one until after both patches came out), my Sims have been having mixed gender twins and triplets without the apple and watermelon trick.

I was so happy to find that change!
At first I thought it was a glitch, but it's happened in three files to three separate families (can you tell I always get the fertility treatment LTR? ;)).

I doubt you read it in Carl's Guide.  If you did, I'd like to see the link so I can ask him to change it.  It's been a rumor since Sims 3 was released that it only takes three of the appropriate fruit to produce the desired gender, but it's been documented many times that three isn't enough.  I recommend up to 10 of whichever fruit, or just letting the mother eat nothing but the fruit during the entire pregnancy.  That's the best way to really make sure you get what you want.

This is what it says on the guide:
Quote
A Simple Cheat for Choosing the Gender of the Baby: For Having a Boy Eat Apples or Eat Watermelons to Have a Girl
The second 'pregnancy cheat'. Before a Sim is visibly pregnant, you should have them eat one of two fruit in order to have the baby be a boy or girl. If you want to have a boy, eat apples. For having a girl baby, eat watermelons. Head to the supermarket and buy the chosen fruit. Buy about ten, that should do the trick. Have your pregnant Sim eat all 10 of them (click the little arrow on the apple icon to queue up individual apples). This is the only way to choose between boy or girl, as there are no console cheats to affect pregnancy.
I see no mention of three in there.

Sorry no it wasn't Carls guide, I believe it was the small book guide that came out the same time as the base game...

Sorry no it wasn't Carls guide, I believe it was the small book guide that came out the same time as the base game...

I have read what you wrote in other guides on the internet, but it's not accurate.  I can attest to that personally.  Before I found Carl and Pam's, I've tried this method many, many times, and it fails as much as it succeeds.  Since finding this guide, I have never failed to have a child of a specific gender when I followed the procedure laid out here.  Not once.

The popularity of this inaccuracy is likely due to the writers of the first internet guide engaging in a bit of "copy-pasta" in an effort to be the first to get the information up (possibly even from the book you mentioned).  Thus, the inaccurate information gets propagated as the copy-pasta gets copy-pasta'd on other guide, and on and on, ad nauseum.  It wouldn't be the first time that incorrect information has gone viral like this.  And it probably won't be the last, either.

We have a thing about accuracy on Carl and Pam's...almost to the point to where it borders on an obsessive/compulsive disorder.  We do not post anything in the guide unless it has been thoroughly tested and checked.  More often than not, our members report typos and notify us of poor wordings in the corrections forum more than they do inaccuracies.  This is not to even mention that you'd be hard pressed to find someone with more nooboo experience than Pam.  She's the Dr. Spock of the Sims world.  ;)

Since this thread has been resurrected, I wonder if this works for horses...

Except maybe a winner from a Baby Boomer challenge. Maybe. I don't know (I haven't gone to the Graveyard to see who won them recently).

I can also confirm the fact - if you use only three apples/watermelons, you will get a chance to have a baby of the desired gender, but that chance isn't 100% - nowhere near, in fact. I never force babies (always au naturale for me). I used to, and I used the widely publisiced "3 fruit does it all!" method - failed several times. I wanted a boy so badly... then I got a girl. As always, if you're unsure, the best way is to blatantly overdose on it - if you really, really want a girl, and you have the time to spare, eat up 50 watermelons - then there'll be no chance whatsoever for a boy.
And Pam once said somewhere something like this: "it's a requirement for the Immortal Dynasty challenge for the seventh generation to be a girl.  If you eat three watermelons and get a boy, it's game over." So always make sure you've eaten plenty of watermelons Dynasty players!

Hehe. Copy-Pasta'd.

I doubt that even the winner of any of the Baby Boomer challenges has done the in-depth research that Pam has.  George Foreman has 10 kids, while Dr. Spock only had 2...but I wouldn't consider George Foreman more of an expert on the subject. ;)

Wow, talk about "scorched earth" tactics lol.  10 watermelons is plenty enough.  While you prefer au naturale genders, I tend to do this as a rule and have never failed to get the gender I wanted by following this procedure.  And I saw this thread a very long time ago.

It seems to me to be a rather moot point to be discussing how many fruit produce the gender of a child now, this is something that has been tried and tested a million times over, eating three apples may influence producing a male nooboo but eating 10 virtually guarantees it. Using the 10 fruit method I have never failed in producing the gender of my choosing.

I continue to be thankful that there's is an OCD passion about trying and testing rumour or hunches until the people involved with that testing are sick of the sight of the subject they are testing.

It is that fact that makes the creators of our guides be able to stand by their word and defend it until the end of time.

Kindest Regards
KJ

Excellent, Sportsfan.  Thank you.
You're welcome.

And I've had times when 3 apples/watermelons isnt enough, but 10 leaves there to be a minute chance (something like less than 1% I believe) that it will not become what you intend.
I think I read somewhere about how much each apple/watermelon adds to the percentage but I can't remember if it was on the forum and/or it was accurate.

I read that too, but it also said about using only three fruits, which, as we know, don't do very well at all. Therefore I doubt it was here. I think the skin of the forum/website was white. This is blue.

I read about it here: http://www.ehow.com/info_8360947_sims-cheats-baby-gender-watermelon.html
Quote
The base percentage for baby gender is 50 percent male and female. Eating fruit during early pregnancy can tip these percentages toward male or female babies. Apples encourage male births, while watermelons encourage female births. Each piece of fruit eaten increases the odds one way or the other by 5 percent, with a cap on how much you can alter these percentages at 15 percent. The most you can do to influence baby gender, then, is to have your Sim eat three apples or watermelons, giving you the 15 percent increase for your preferred gender.
I believe that this is not a reliable site though.

That's where I first read it too.

You believe correctly.  In fact, it shares one common flaw with with Wikipedia in how all of the information is user provided.  The difference is (and it's a big difference) that this site doesn't require citations and there's no behind the scenes discussions about the accuracy or validity of the articles.

When the Sims 3 base game first came out, users copied and pasted information there from anywhere they could.  Mostly from the Prima guide, but where that didn't provide information, they copied it from anywhere else they could, just to fill the void.  I've seen speculation from the official forums (which turned out to be false) posted there as fact, and someone even copied and pasted a list of cheats from the Sims 2 and said they were for the Sims 3.  While most of the codes are the same (or at least similar enough to not raise suspicion), the one that stood out was the "boolprop" cheat.  As we all know, this code was not carried over from Sims 2, and was, for all intents and purposes, replaced by "testingcheatsenabled."

One of my Sims had not one, but two sets of mixed gender twins! No Fertility Treatment, no fruit, just kids' TV and kids' music. I plan for her to have two more kids, and if she has mixed gender twins again, I might just fall out of my desk chair.

I have way too many twins in my games! I can think of at least four sets of them in different game files... :P

Did you do anything special to get the mixed gender twins?  I mean, did you confirm the gender with a doctor and then eat the opposite fruit?  I've heard rumors that mixed gender twins can now happen without doing the doctor thing, but haven't seen it confirmed.

I had a set of mixed gender twins in a test file without eating any kind of fruit or seeing a doctor to check gender. Had static needs on and just sat the mother in a room with kids radio and TV till it was time to give birth. I think she did have fertility treatment though.

Nope, she didn't talk to the doctor or eat any fruit. Most of the time, she just stayed at home and upgraded appliances while listening to kid's music and TV.

Like I said earlier in this thread, I've had so many mixed gender twins/triplets now (at least 8 lots of them) without eating fruit that I would say that I am 100% sure that you don't need the fruit/doctor trick to have mixed gender twins any more.

But you also said that you had been using the fertility treatment?  I wonder if that is a part of it too.  Or it could be since cats and dogs can have more than one kitten/puppy they made it random all over so you wouldn't only get girl or boy puppies.

I've had three sets of mixed gender twins since getting Pets. The first set the mother had the fertility lifetime reward but she never had a doctor determine the gender of the baby or ate any fruit to choose the gender. The other mother had two sets of mixed gender twins and she had no fertility treatment and no apples or watermelon. What I did do was have her listen to kids music practically nonstop (while cooking, reading, working in her garden - if she was awake she was listening to kids music) because I wanted twins but I wanted the gender to be a surprise...and it was!

I had 1 set of mixed gender twins in one of my storys, I ate 3 apples when she was 1 day pregnant then asked a doctor (which was her husband) to determine the gender which showed I was having a boy, then I ate 5 watermelens and watched kids tv. I didnt have any fertility treatment.
