Can I use a backup file?

Somehow I did something and my picture panel is gone and I can not even veiw inside my sims house. I have 2 files in my Saves folder. One is the missed up file and one is .backup, can I use the .backup and if so, how? Please help.. ??? :-\ :-[ :'(
