First time player
« on: December 29, 2025, 07:29:59 PM »
Happy Holidays, everyone!

I am reaching out because I am attempting to play sims 4 for the first time in years. It's been on my computer just sitting there and i thought i should give it a go. but I am finding it a bit intimidating. My son and I share an account and we have a bunch of expansion and stuff packs and a few kits. my question is, where should i begin, what town should i try living in first and what career path should i choose as a first timer. i have a saved game right now with a female sim as an artist. trying to treat the game the way i do in sims 3, but here you can't go to city hall and become an artist. any advice is very much appreciated and thanks!

Shirley

Hi Shirley - It's been awhile since I played Sims 3 so may not be able to make good correlations between the games, but in Sims 4 there are rabbit hole careers (like artist) and then there are careers where, as the player, you go to work with your sim and guide their work day. There are also work from home careers - where you typically have one or maybe two tasks to complete and the rest of your day is free.

Starting with a rabbit hole job is good - it will feel the most familiar and similar to Sims 3. You get the job by applying with your phone or your computer, and then start the next working day. You'll have tasks that need to be completed to get the next promotion - if speed of promotion is important to you, you'll want to make sure to send your sim to work with all needs met (maxed out is best). Some careers get better progression if your sim is in a certain mood - for artist it would be inspired. So you would want to do things that put your sim in an inspired mood before work - take a thoughtful shower, cloudgaze, I think you can research art on the computer. Also, if you click on your sim in the UI panel (the small pictures) you can set them to "work hard" - it's fairly easy to get promoted in one day in the early stages of the career as long as you have completed the tasks for the promotion before your sim goes to work.

Hi Glazey Lady, thanks for replying. and for the ideas. I have a sim at home currently as an artist. she applied for the ministry of... something or other, i can't remember the title, but what drives me crazy about sims 4 is the needs drain soooo darn fast and i tried the cheat for it but it is not working for me or i am doing in wrong. so i am going to start a new save, and try your idea. the current one i have was a test game for me so it's ok with me to start over. I am also looking for mods and cc to use and add to the game. Happy New Year amd thanks again!

Hi Shirley- if you are open to mods, the first one I would suggest is MCCC (MC Control Center). This is a complicated mod in that is has MANY settings you can impact, but the blessing of it is that you don't have to change anything, so you can get to know all the many settings slowly. It does allow you to change the rate of needs decay to make it slower. If you do decide to use this and want some tips about settings, let me know and while I'm not an expert on the mod and there are many settings I haven't explored, I am happy to share with you the ones that I wouldn't want to play without. I will say that I played for years with no mods at all - I was mostly playing challenges that didn't allow any mods. But since I started using mods, I just really don't play without this one.

Another one I would suggest, at least early on, is UI Cheats Extension - this mod lets you change virtually anything right from the game interface - if your needs go down and you want them up, you can just click on the bar of that need and drag it to green. There's so much you can change. In my actual play, I don't use this one much because it's so easy to just cheat stuff and then you can lose a lot of what the game is about, but in the beginning, when you're still learning how to get your needs up and keep them up, and learning all kinds of other things about the game, it can be really handy to just be able to cheat it up and keep going with whatever you're wanting to do.

The big thing to remember about mods is that when the game is updated by EA, those updates can break the mod. Most mod creators (at the least the ones that produce the best and most-used mods) are pretty quick about updating their mods, but you do have to download the new version when that happens.

I'm not always on the forum every day, so I may not be really speedy with responses, but if you have any questions, I'm happy to help whenever I can.
