How do you unlock more books to write?

I remember the first time I ever started writing I unlocked a bunch of books without writing that many. This time I've wrote more than 20 books and I've only unlocked one new one, so what am I doing wrong?

Write 3 novels of a particular genre. That will often unlock another genre.

For instance, 3 sci-fi novels will unlock fantasy.
