No. But it doesn't matter. Your available items will automatically pop up when you consign items — whether they're in your Family Inventory or personal Inventory.

Aha! And what if one of my sims is a sculptor (as a job) and the other will sell the stuff the sculptor makes? Will that make the sculpter get promotions, or are those experiences just for the one that sells the stuff?

I don't know. With my da Vinci character I always had my Painter/Inventor/Sculptor go to the consignment store and do the transactions.

I thought that money earned through the consignment store doesn't count toward job experience for promotions. How did this work for you, Metro?

It definitely does, Pam. With my da Vinci guy I was lucky and was spared the various problems players are reporting in this thread and the consignment thread. It works just as it should — at 5ish when a Sim typically receives the daily consignment sale notice those sales will indeed push the green bar higher towards the next promotion.

In the 3 Monster Maker guide that I'm writing I've find that it is better to let the inventor go to the store to sell his own stuff after he is registered as an inventor.
His companion (sort of house cleaner slave) was also registered as an inventor after learning one skill of it. Than I did some test in letting him sell the stuff my 'real' and higher skilled inventor makes. It remains the same that the companion remains to sell $30,- of inventions, even though he sells it for more than $100,-. When my inventor sells his own stuff, he was able to sell it for a higher price, even though his companion is a born salesman, and the inventor is not.

So unless I have forgotten to investigate something, it turns out for me that it is better for a sim to sell his own stuff. Especially when he is more skilled in the particular skill.

Makes total sense. I had a hunch that that would be the case, but the whole consignment store thing is pretty whacked out as it is, so you just never know.

Yes, it is I'm afraid. And there are a few more bugs, too. :(
Even though my inventor is on it's way to make a monster (it's about time), he isn't able to get promotions with inventing. It is weird! I've let him quit his job, start again as an inventor and still he does'nt get promotions.
Not that it is necesary for this guide, but having a bit of money will makes things more easy. Especially when the other sim finally get back from the grave. Oh, and no: ghosts don't count as a monster.

Hmmm, I hope I am not too much off topic right now.

Yes, you are.  This topic is about sculpting, not bugs in the game or the inability to get promotions in Inventing.

My quartet in the Wishmaster challenge includes two unlucky sims.  They love sculpting, but their stone blocks almost always break.  They got woohooium once, the other times it was a "valuable gem" like an emerald or quartz, worth a lot less than the cost of the stone block.  Quite often their ice blocks shatter as well.  Obviously sculpting is not a viable way for an unlucky sim to make a living!  Good thing the others in the household have more luck with their endeavours.   ;D

Heh. Sculpting (amongst many other things) is a cornerstone of my plans for Wishmasters. I plan on having all four Sims pursue it. The wishes towards the top of the skill are some of the biggest ones in the game.

How does self-employment as a sculptor play into that? Has anyone actually determined that self-employment is substantially more beneficial than sculpting as unemployed?

Well, in terms of the current challenge, the way you would approach sculpting is you'd knock out whatever LTW you needed to do, then you would focus on sculpting and register at City Hall as a sculptor. You want to do that to gain the career wishes that will fire as a result.

One of the benefits of sculpting is that at higher levels your sim has the ability to make highly realistic sculptures of friends and family.  Here is Ludwig, one of my Wishmaster challengers, proudly displaying his latest creation:

Of course, anyone who has played Sunset Valley will immediately recognize this as a sculpture of Christopher Steel.  Obviously.  Ludwig has level 10 sculpting skill, and this is his best creation to date.  It sold for $1642.

By the way, did I mention that Ludwig is absent-minded, unlucky, and totally insane?  I don't think we're going to win this challenge, but we're sure having fun!  ;D
