I've never noticed my sims reacting any differently to objects that were their favorite color as opposed to ones that were not.  Is there really any benefit to making things exactly your sims' favorite color?

I've read that if rooms are decorated in the exact hex code of your Sim's favorite color, that he/she will get a decorated moodlet from it.  Personally, I've never been able to make it happen.  However, I use the hex codes of my Sims' favorite colors for clothing and cars, just for fun.  I also thought this would be good information for anyone who likes to build and participates in the building contest.  For example, Sarah Jones' favorite color is violet, so having the hex code for violet will make it easier to decorate for a contest.

I've read that too, on the Sims Wiki.  I haven't seen any in-game evidence to support it.  A wiki is only as good as the last person to edit it, and unfortunately sometimes people post information there that they've heard somewhere or read in the Prima guide (which is not always accurate), but that has not been confirmed or tested or discovered by looking at the code.

I do use my sims' favourite colours, for fun, like you do, and not just for clothes or decorating.  In one neighbourhood (just for something different) I use their favourite colours for their hair, with their skins from the red, green or blue palettes.  It gives the game a very cartoony look.

While on the subject of colours, here's some non-sim sites that can help with coming up with colour schemes when you're decorating.  They're easy to use, put in the hex code of a colour you want to use, and then you can see some colours that might work well with that colour.

I'll give that a try, although I always get the well decorated or beautiful vista moodlet anyway.  Thanks Pam.  I only was able to come close in my house building contest entry.

My purpose for sharing Sarah's favorite color was simply to provide additional inspiration.  That's why it wasn't included under Requirements, but rather shared in the description.  Basically the entire Contest is designed to boost your creative thinking, rather than provide a formula for what kind of house to build.  :)

And it certainly has done that!  I keep seeing all kinds of different things to do and ways to think.  This first house is a basic, starter house built on the cheap.  Something I have never done in the past, so it really stretched my thinking.  I wasn't even totally happy with my result but felt it was acceptable for a first try.  Now I'm itching to try my hand on my own to build more starter houses just for fun and experimentation.  No time though.

I really appreciate the fact that this contest exists, and certainly it wouldn't be here if not for your efforts.  Thanks so much for doing this, Ariagirl.

Ha, I love the codes for white, yellow, and black. So original, hehe, though I know the codes are generated by the computer, they're still funny.

Well the hex codes are not exactly computer-generated. Each code is based on the amount of red, green and blue contained in the color. White is "ffffff", meaning  255 255 255 in hexadecimal, that means it has the maximum amount of red, green and blue, while black should have been "000000", meaning that there is no color at all. So the black used in the game as a favorite color would be in fact a dark gray. That's funny.

True, but it's not a number made up by the developers is what I meant. Though that is funny, why isn't black 000000? Unless, they're using the pigment colors, not the colors made by light.

No worries about that, Tommy.  Your house is spectacular!  It's my fault this wasn't published sooner.  I didn't really make the connection of how helpful it would be until the contest had already started.  So sorry about that.

Now that I am thinking about it, I believe so.  I had built a small room for my sim to sculpt, it wasn't anything fancy.  I always put a radio and at least a couple of nice things in there, well, I put one of those wavy lights in there, from the wedding set.  My sim went in the room to look at the sculpting table, his mood was about half way, just under the mark.  His favorite color is geen and I have pretty much always made their lights the same color as their favorite.  Anyway, I changed the light color to green and put nothing else in the room, he went back in and I noticed his happiness bar had gone up, almost to the top and then when I turned the radio on, it hit the top, so, I assume that colors affect their mood somewhat.  May not be much, but added to favorite music or anything else and at least it helps some.

I tested it with a blank four wall room and nada. Nice to have the codes though, wasn't sure what spiceberry was. It's kind of a plum color.

I am going to assume it has an effect that is just not so easily seen. Because if not then really what it the point in them having a favorite color?

I've never been able to prove that the colors do anything.  And I agree, it seems pointless if they don't do something.  I've been using their favorite colors for clothing and cars, just to have some sort of organization.

I've had trouble getting the hex codes to stick when I've customised the furniture etc.  I would set it and save the change but if I went back to that piece of furniture the hex code would often be one number different eg. spiceberry has a 1 at the end (can't remember the whole string offhand) but when I went back to some of the furniture the hex had a 0 at the end.

Has anybody else noticed this and do you know if it decreases the chance of a decorated moodlet by not being exact?

HelenP,

Once you get a color "just right" (either Hexcode value or it "looks right") do you save it to the "Favorites?"

You know, that little heart-thingy on the customization palette?

Like you, Pam, I've never seen any in-game benefits from color-coordinating stuff to match a Sim's favorite color. But I've found saving stuff I've customized (and saving color schemes or modifications I've made to patterns I see in-game) helpful in organizing / sorting things.

And with the "moodlette" concept, it'd be very easy for EA to (at some point) add a buff like "Favorite Color! +20 Mood" sometime down the road.

I have this happen fairly often.  I've just thought that the game makes minor adjustments to the color for some reason beyond my understanding.  I gave up on getting the decorated moodlet long ago.

@ Happytime, I've not tried saving it to favourites so thanks for the suggestion, I'll try it next time I'm playing.

@Pam, good to know it's not just me, it the favourites thing doesn't work I'll just give up on it.

Helen, I think I'll go ahead and see for myself, too.

I've not noticed my "fave" colors shifting values, but then I've not really paid super-close attention to them (i.e., putting actual values in and comparing them over game sessions).

I'll be surprised if they wander once saved to "Favorites" but you never know.  :)

I really don't think the game tracks or attaches saved values to "Fave Color" yet ... it's just one of the three "favorite things" most humans have, so it makes sense for the Sims to discuss them.

There are multiple ways in computing environments of keeping track of "color" and "color spaces," but the programming behind comparing "nearby" or "comparative / close" colors is pretty complex.

I'm more inclined to believe it has to do with how well they get along with other sims. I've often seen when they talk "about interests" (directly translated), favourite colour is often the topic.

I agree Swede.

I'm thinking there's code for each Sim to be able to "discuss" / "chat" about at LEAST three things with new acquaintances: Fave Music, Fave Food, Fave Color.

I've not paid that much attention to the Sim's conversations with each other enough to really notice. I do know I see them yapping (frequently) about those three values with new acquaintances, and I have noticed some "double-plus friendly increase" for relationship for the same music genre, but I've not seen it happen yet for colors.

Which either means it's there (and I missed it), it's NOT there, or my Sim is bugged.  ;)

Lol, I know.  It has given me inspiration for a whole new bunch of names for my Sims, too.  And their clothes will be coded to be the same color as their names.  I currently have a set of twins named Chartreuse and Shamrock Holmes, and their respective clothing is colored to match the names.  It makes me laugh.  I've got a page full of names and codes...  reds, purples, blues, yellows.  All set and ready for my Dynasty family!  :D

I don't know about everyone else, but though my favorite color is vibrant and bright, I don't use that exact color when decorating my house, though I do buy clothes and things in that color.  My friend who's favorite color is red doesn't have a bright red dining room, but does have a gorgeous deep red on the walls.  When I do use my favorite color decorating my home, I tend to use a muted tone of it so it looks less in your face and more comfortable.   I treat my sims the same way.

I tone it down, too.  Mostly I use color in my Sims clothing to help me tell them apart from a distance.  They get their cars in those colors too.  My Dynasty family has a theme of colors being the names of the heirs.  I've got Nectarine and Indigo Dreamweaver and their clothes are nectarine color and indigo respectivly.  I'm enjoying it this way because just using my Sims colors over and over was getting boring.

See, here's Indigo Dreamweaver dressed in her indigo colored clothes:

Don't think this has been mentioned yet but I suggest downloading the instant eyedropper.  I first downloaded it to use with the FB Graffiti app because I can't be bothered to mix colours but I use it more on the Sims now.

If ever you see a colour on a web page or um... anything that you want, you just drag the icon from the tray and it comes up with a hex code.  It copies it to your clipboard but you can't CTRL+V into the game so just paste it to something else and copy it in.  I use it a LOT.

I love eyedropper tools. They're great for picking up colors from everywhere.

When I'm using Sims' favorite colors for decorating, I try to pick different shades within the color scope, rather than use the exact hex. For example, in mine and my partner's self-sim family, there are three sims that like lilac and two that like orange. Of the three sims that like lilac, one uses a palette quite close to the game's original hex, one uses a very muted mauve that's very close to white, and one uses something in between lilac and purple. Of the two sims that like orange, one uses orange very close to the game color, and one uses a bright yellowy orange that I combine with black. I also try to combine the favorite colors of my couples in their rooms in all my games. In one game I have a bedroom that mixes red, blue and purple decor to fit with the favorites of the sims that use it (the red is the accent). I used to play a web breeding game that was a lot about the art of hex code combining, and I learned how to make colors look good together there. Some colors naturally lend themselves to each other (red and green, blue and orange, yellow and purple) and getting the others to fit is hard, but can be done. If you want to combine two colors that usually don't look good together, changing the shades of the colors will often do the trick. I'll post some examples later that I hope will help builders and decorators, but I'm getting a little burned out, so it will have to wait for today.

I bookmarked it, saved a copy to my computer, and printed one out to keep with my second Immortal Dynasty plan.

If you're talking about the favorite colors in the game, they are found on the first page of this thread.

Wow! Thanks Pam, that site you linked to is amazing, it will be so helpful. I am the type of person who colour-codes everything, clothes, room styles, anything! Also it's really good because I spend forever trying to get the right colour in game  :)

Pam, you`re back today right? I have a suggestion that you add the RGB values of each colour to your first post, since Hex is not available for all things (i.e. eye colour). I`ll find them out for you later today. You could just leave the codes at the end of this thread if you don`t think it`s a very big deal.

Pure black is actually 000000, although I find it can be too dark if not accented with white or some other colour. Pure red is FF0000, but that can be too bright.

True, it is.  But Sims 3 doesn't use pure black for it's favorite color.  They call it black, but it's a tiny bit lighter.  Same with the red.  It may not be a true red, but it's Sims 3 favorite color red.

Thank you Pam for all the hex codes, I use them quite a lot when playing.
I've found this website that calculates complementary, triad etc. colors along with saturation and lightness variations. It is very usefull when you want to tone up/down some colors as accents or just trying to find the exact complementary color to suit well your room :)

Tell me please if you find any mistake in my post. English is not my mother language. It's "only" the third one in frequency of utilisation. I'm "half-French".

This post has been a lot of help. The sites you linked I now use to compare different color schemes in Adobe Kuler.
I also haven't gotten the favorite color mood boost but just being able to figure out the codes and use them properly for my sims makes me happy as is. Thanks again for the list.  :D

I have a sim who's favorite color is spice berry, so I tested out the hex code I put her in a room without any objects in it, I made the free walls and floors the exact hex code and she got the well decorated moodlet. It does work.

This is a wonderful resource, thank you so much! I've never done experiments to see if being in a room of their favorite color has any effect on my Sims, but if I remember to test that out next time I play, I shall. I just really like having the exact hex codes for their favorite colors because it was frustrating to try to guess and end up not-quite-right.

I'm glad this information is useful.  I've tested using favorite colors in furnishings and it's never given me any kind of boost.  I think that was just a rumor from soon after Sims 3 was released.

I took a quick peek at the code, it looks like the colors are used in Online Dating and in those thought balloons when speaking.
