2017 Sims 4 World Ranking
« on: December 23, 2016, 11:38:58 AM »
2017 World Ranking

The World Ranking has two components: a Wins component (50%) and a Participation component (50%). It's a simple ranking system, but still an effective measure of player caliber. To receive a World Ranking a player must finish at least three Tournament challenges.

The goal for this year is 57 ranked players. Jump in and help make it happen.

2017 Final World Ranking — December 4

So, here's how the team calculates the World Ranking. Each of the 15 2017 Tournament challenges has a column in the Tournament spreadsheet. Individual cells in the challenge columns are filled with a ratio of how many players a player beat in that challenge in relation to how many could have been beaten. Let’s take a look at Joe Blow and how Joe did in the first 3 events of the season. Let’s say the field size of event #1 is 25 and Joe finished 8th. That means he beat 17 out of a possible 24 players (Joe is not counted), so Joe’s event #1 cell is =17/24. The 2nd event was larger, 30 players, and Joe did even better and finished 6th. Event #2’s cell is =24/29. Event #3’s participation dropped to 25, but Joe pulled out all the stops and won it. Event #3’s cell is =24/24.

Down the spreadsheet after all the individual challenge columns is the “Sum of Wins” column. This is just the total of all of one’s ratios in each challenge column. So, with the first 3 events in the bag, Joe’s “Sum of Wins” column is 2.537.

Next comes the “# of Events” column which is a simple count function for all challenge columns. Joe has only participated in three 2016 Tournament Challenges so far, so his “# of Events” figure is 3. The “Sum of Wins” is then divided by the “# of Events” for an “Ave of Wins” column:

2.537 / 3 = .845.

Now it’s time to add the weight for the Wins component. The Wins weight for everyone is 50% of final score, so we take .845 X .50 and get .422 That’s Joe’s final Wins component.

The second component is Participation. Everyone who submits a score in a challenge receives a 10% participation bonus figured into their ranking. So, there’s a 10-event cap at which point a player receives 100% of the Participation component. If someone participates in more than 10 Tournament challenges, then a player’s best finishes will be used to compute the World Ranking.

Okay, so Joe Blow has participated in the first 3 events. His participation bonus is .30 (10% per event). Participation counts for 50% of final score, so we then take .30 X .50 to get Joe’s final Participation component of .15.

Joe’s World Ranking is his final Wins component + his final Participation component:

.422 + .15 = .572

So far this year 16 players participated in the first three events and have earned a world ranking. Grats to ratchie for being at the top of the heap.

Wow that's genuinely shocking, just shows you don't have to place at the top to stand a chance of winning.

True. Consistency and simply putting in the effort to post a score is a big factor in how the world ranking is calculated. thekatie0409, LenaLJ, Minnie Mouse, and Caterina are all technically above you - but, none of them have participated in the required 3 events to get a world ranking yet. So as time goes on this season it will be interesting to see how things shake up.

I think you missed my score posting in the Painter's Challenge - I have participated in all 3 events. Can I please be added to the scoreboard? :) Ratchie, I think you'll still keep #1 since I performed pretty poorly there.

I forgot not 1, not 2, but 3 players on the painter leaderboard. Wow. Not one of my prouder moments. That changed things a bit when I reconfigured the world ranking. Lol. Sigh.

@coolsim9999999 did you participate in patient and perpetrator? I can only see your score in two challenges that have completed.
You have posted a score in the cupids challenge but that is currently open so is not factored into the scoring yet.

Exactly - I think that is where you are possibly confused, coolsim. The world ranking I figured out yesterday is based on three events that all have closed. You did not participate in the Patient and Perpetrator event, so as soon as Cupid's Challenges closes that will be your 3rd event and you'll earn a world ranking. :)

Yep. I cannot put stuff into the spreadsheet until an event closes because there are quite a few players who inevitably wait until the last minute to post scores. Sometimes you can actually look at a good player's score and gain a little insight from simply what they focused on if there is more than one component.

Baby Boomer is in the books, so I updated the World Ranking today. Look at how close Lena and ratchie are...wow...could it be any closer?

GlazeyLady, oshizu, and HelenP finished their 3rd events of the season with Baby Boomer so are now in the ranking. Good job, ladies. :)

Special mention goes out to coolsim9999999 -- she has participated in all but one event this season and she picked herself up in Baby Boomer and did better than previous efforts and rose nicely in the ranking. Woot.  ;D

Thank you very much, @Metropolis Man :)!  I really practiced hard for baby boomer and have learned some essential strategy tips by reading what people post after challenges are closed.  I'm excited to see that I've moved up the list.

Wow --- Lena and ratchie --- you guys are super close.  That's awesome.

It's fun to see where everyone landed after baby boomer.  Good luck to everyone for the rest of the 2017 tournament season.

Wow — a big change at the top of the heap with the close of Restaurant Simpossible…Minnie Mouse takes over top spot and pulls ahead of LenaLJ and ratchie. Both Lena and ratchie ended up not posting a score and with Minnie Mouse topping the 18-player event, that was enough to leapfrog her to #1. Well done, Minnie Mouse.

lesleyj42 is also coming on strong — she jumped ahead of ratchie and is just a hair behind LenaLJ and sits in 3rd overall.

I also want to mention sdhoey — she made a really nice jump in the World Ranking with her solid finish in Restaurant Simpossible. wonderoona also jumped ahead quite a bit.

Finally, I need to give a tip of the hat to Isabelalabe and fluffyj00 who finished their 3rd events — welcome to the World Ranking. :)

Another change at the top of the ranking -- Minnie Mouse sat the Collecting event out and as a result, lesleyj42 pounced on the opportunity, won the event and jumped to the top of the ranking. Well done, lesleyj42.

Ginj and coolsim9999999 both deserve special mention as they jumped up 4 spots in the ranking after their finishes in the Collecting event.

Pumpkinmelon has been added to the World Ranking since the Collecting event was their 3 finish. Grats.

The 2017 Tournament season is now half over -- 8 events in the books. I want to recognize the following players that have carded scores in all 8 events: CynKuy, Eight8Keys, lesleyj42, Metropolis Man, MomOfMany, and sdhoey.

Social Media Star finished up last night and the results did not change the top 3 in the world ranking. But, there were some other minor changes towards the top...yours truly jumped ahead one spot ahead of ratchie. And with her nice win in Social Media Star, GlazeyLady jumped up 2 spots in the ranking. Well done. :)

What excites me most about this world ranking is 4 players finished their 3rd event by participating in Social Media Star and makes the list longer: thekatie0409, Whimsical Peanut, Annabel, and Windhavyn. Here's the interesting thing about thekatie0409 -- her 11th place standing in the ranking right now is misleading because she is a much better player than that given she took 2nd in the first two events of the year, but did not participate again until Social Media Star, so the participation component of how the world ranking is figured her her a bit.

I'm excited, guys...it's looking like my goal of 57 ranked players by the end of the year just may happen. The team will keep things simple for future events -- I think that is going to help.

Minnie Mouse    .808
Metropolis Man  .849
GlazeyLady       .730

The World Ranking was updated this morning with the results of A Sim About Town. That event was the 11th of the 2017 season, so for a handful of players that have participated in every event -- CynKuy, Eighty8Keys, lesleyj42, Metropolis Man, and sdhoey -- I dropped their worst performance to date since the ranking is based on 10 events.

And one more thing -- welcome to the world ranking, WriterJunkie. :)

The Race to Immortality is now over and I updated the World Ranking. Wowza! Huge news towards the top...GlazeyLady jumped not one, but two spots and sits firmly in second place, nipping at Lena's heels. Nice job, GlazeyLady. In the field of 19 players, I am guessing that nearly half of them moved up significantly in the World Ranking -- not just just moving up one or two spots, but 4 or more. WriterJunkie, MysteryGem, CynKuy, oshizu, and HelenP all moved up big time. Not surprisingly, the winner of the Immortality event, reggikko, moved up five spots in the World Ranking. Congrats on the win, reggikko. I believe it is their first Tournament victory. And a final special shout out to MissZoef -- she moved up 10 spots in the ranking with a great performance.

Sul Sul! And Thanks for All the Fish! is now closed, so I just updated the World Ranking. GlazeyLady definitely is going to give Lena a run for the overall title with this last win. It's the narrowest of margins separating these two high caliber players and whoever wins the Finale will likely be the Season 8 Champion. reggikko and oshizu moved up quite a few spots with great finishes in this last event. And welcome to the World Ranking, smastbrook. :)

I just updated the World Ranking for the last time -- the Finale is over and the 2017 season is now over. Congrats to LenaLJ on the overall #1 spot. It could not have been a closer race at the top between LenaLJ, GlazeyLady, and lesleyj42. And I have to throw Minnie Mouse in that elite group too because she ended up not participating in the season's last two events, so if she had then the competition would have even been tighter.

39 players total earned a World Ranking this year...definitely short of the 57 players I had hoped for, but I have fingers crossed for next year. EA put out some solid expansions this year and maybe that will bring more players into the fold and have them find their way to the forum for some good competition.

Thanks again, everyone. Good luck in the 2018 season. :)
