How to tell if your sim is pregnant?
« on: April 23, 2011, 12:18:00 PM »
Sorry for yet another question..

My sim, Lori, is now married and has done the 'try for baby' option as she wished to have a child (and so did her husband).. That was only last night (in sim time), and now Lori is feeling nauseous, but hasn't actually been sick or anything, yet? So, because of the nauseous thing, does that mean she's pregnant? And should I now start eating my fruit of choice for the baby's gender, or leave it for a bit? I was wondering that perhaps it was too soon to tell she's pregnant cos it's not even been a day, yet?

Never apologize for asking a question, it's how we all learn.

Yes, she is pregnant but she isn't showing yet. What gives it away is the nauseous moodlet from "Unknown causes" It's best to start stuffing her before she starts showing to lock in gender. Try for at least ten of the chosen fruit. Have fun!

You can tell if the "try for baby" option worked when you here jingling after your sims whoohoo'd. Sometimes the jingling bugs out though (doesn't occur), and you can miss the pregnancy. Quite soon after your sims succesfully "tried for baby", however, you can usually already tell if she's pregnant. She'll be nauseous, throw up, and sometimes even has back pain. A day after your sims tried for baby (and it was succesful), your sim will start to show and get a belly. At that point the baby's sex is locked.

About the fruit: if you're not sure, just eat it. The window where you can determine the baby's sex with fruit is quite small, that first day. By the time your sims start to show it is too late. This apparently isn't true, it has always been true for me but perhaps that was just bad luck. It appears that you can change the babies sex almost until the last momnet. If you really want a baby of a specific sex but you're not sure if your sims is actually pregnant you should always just go for the fruit. No harm no foul if she turns out not to be pregnant and if she is you're certain to get a boy/girl.

I hope this answered your questions.

Could anyone tell me how long the actual pregnancy lasts, please? Like, simwise?

It lasts somewhere around 3 sim days, give or take an hour.

The gender of the baby is not set in stone until the moment of it's birth or when it's determined by a doctor.  In fact, I have changed the result a few hours before labor occurs a few times by reverting to the last save and gorging on apples/watermelon before it happens.

This is also obvious in the thread about mixed gender twins, where many people have used this process successfully (and it's not something that can be done in a single day).  The quantity of fruit required to guarantee a particular gender is significant, and the 3-5 recommended regularly across the internet is not nearly enough to ensure a particular gender 100%.  In fact, the people recommending this will often tell you that it's not a sure-fire method.  But I have never encountered anyone who has had their sim consume 10 or more apples/watermelons in the course of a pregnancy and not had a baby of the gender they were trying for.

Usually 3 fruits in the first day works for me. I'm always shooting for girls and I find I have a more than 50% chance of having a girl even if I don't use fruit to influence the gender. So maybe the fruit isn't actually doing it that quickly and it's a combination of the higher chance of girls.

I think I've influenced to female so many times that my game just knows - lol.

This is if you're playing on normal lifespan.

I would never recommend as few as 3 fruits.  To really guarantee the gender, I say 10 pieces of fruit at least.

Not to go off-topic, (well, I kind of am) but I have good luck with only 3, as well as eating them after she changes to maternity clothes. It's only failed once. (the one time I actually really needed it to) So, in my personal experiences, 3 is not 100%, but it's usually enough.

I always do around 6-7 fruits and it always works, and I don't feed them until after she's showing. When she starts showing the camera will suddenly zoom in on her and some music will sound as she changes into maternity clothes. This is usually 1 day after she conceives. At 2 days she'll get bigger (but no music or zoom), and at 3 days she'll go into labour. That's my experience anyway. And yes sometimes I miss the bells, and think she's not pregnant, because I can still do the try for baby, but a day later, she shows.

Sometimes your Sim will start getting cravings, want to frivolously spend money at the salon, get a massage, and read a pregnancy book, before she officially starts showing. Those are tell tale signs she's pregnant.

This usually doesn't happen until she's showing, but my personal favorite are the bizarre things she wants, like wanting to eat spaghetti at the park, or eat some bizarre combination of food, like mac and cheese and cookies.

Oh, and if you don't like the pregnancy clothes the game generates, you can specify the outfit your sim will where while she's pregnant before she starts to show. Just go to a dresser and set an outfit that's one of the pregnancy-approved outfits, like the sundress that can also be a nightgown, or the sweatpants and the long sleeved tee with the short sleeved tee on top of it. Then you can edit the colors and patterns to your liking. I also recommend changing the shoes your sim wears with the outfit, especially if she normally wears high heels. There's just something not right about a pregnant sim waddling along while wearing high heels and sweatpants! Just make sure that once you set the outfit that it's what your sim is wearing when she begins to show, so I'd recommend wearing as soon as the first wave of nausea kicks in, just to be on the safe side.

I've actually had those weird food combos during the 12th hour of pregnancy, when she started experiencing morning sickness. No one else had a pregnant Sim get cravings before she started showing?

EDIT: One huge wish I get frequently, even before the morning sickness starts is "get massage."
