The Sims 3 Generations - First Impressions

Building mode-

I think the only new interesting item in the build mode is the spiral staircase. It was one of the most interesting item that I like since I was always a fan of it since sims 1. However, when you started using it, you find out how stupid EA designed the stair again. Only one person can use it at a time while the other needs to wait at the other end. I think this is still alright, since it only waste my sims a few sims minutes. However, the worst thing that would happen is sometimes, the sim cancelled its interaction and with a family of 7, sometimes I don't realise that until an sims hour later, which is really frustrating, especially when you want to boast the sims mood before it go to work.

Buy mode-

There are a lot of new buy mode items available in this new ep. Even though EA mainly focus on children and elderly on this ep, there are some overall additional of items for example, new trash compressor, hot drink machine, TV and dining tables. Which I think is great for simmers like me who really like to design my house since EA objects generally looks better make than other users’ make objects due to the amount of resources EA has compare to other simmers.

I think the main focus in buy mode is the buy mode is the new bunk bed. Which work extremely well in small houses/flats. The one with bed on top nothing on bottom actually provide a 2 square space for putting items which your sims can use. However, my issue with it is even the best bunk bed sometimes give my sim a “Bad night sleep”, which I don’t like. The other new bed is the sleeping bed. Which only save space and is extremely cheap (100!).

The second most interesting new item must be the Chemistry set. And at last, EA are no longer bias to children and children can also use chemistry set! The chemistry allow users to discover potions which has different effects. However, with my 4 logic children sim, it seems that his discovering new potion is failing. He had an accident 4 times in a row after the first mood enchanter was found. I wonder why……

The other new item is the video camera, which allow your sims to take video and watch them on tv later. However, this new video addition is not like as a money maker as the photo camera from world adventure. But I guess is a good way for sims to look at their memory lane.

EA focus on children this time and added some new toys, however, I find some of it boring since it is only new looks for old item. However, the new items for children are interesting. For example, the tree house does add a additional to my garden while providing a play space for my sims. But I would like it more if I can build my own tree house :). The water slide is also a good additional for my children sims to play outdoor. There is also a range of new playground equinments like the see-saw which allow sims to have fun. EA also added a Cane, which I had not tried out yet but I think is for elderly to use.

Game play-

The first new thing I must mention got to be pranks. Children and teenagers can now set pranks.  I really like setting pranks because when your child sims successfully set a prank, not only they get a 12 hour +20 mood, even the sims who get prank on get a +20 mood for 30 minutes.

The other new thing is the memory book. You can now take pictures which goes into the sims memory book. The system also automatically to shots for you, however, it does start to get annoying when the system have a pop-up message saying do you want to keep a memory of your sim levelling up on a skill/promotion on a job. If I learn 10 skills to level 10, that would be 100 memories our of my 300 max. Does it worth it?

Another new option for children and teens are after school activity. Children can only go to ballet or scout activity (one only) which is on for 3 after school days while teens has a wider chose of music, sport, debut etc. which is on for 2 after school days and a teen can join 2. Children’s activity each raises 2 skill which teens ones only raise one. I personally like the children scout activity since it raise fishing and gardening, and as most know, loots from this two activity doesn’t worth much at start and I always see book reading a waste of time/money (travelling to library takes too long for a family with no cars!)

The boarding school is another addition. I would say the boarding school is definitely for simmers who can’t be bother or can’t raise their children/teen. In the sims world, “operating” the children/teen sims are sometimes boring, and I think this is what boarding school is for. Help simmers skip this boring period. Boarding school fee range from 600-1200.

The other addition is the day carer profession. But since m.sato has talk so much about it, I won’t go into it.

So that’s it. This is everything I had test so far and  I would update my post when I found new thing I haven’t test yet!

Don't think there are any new skills, since the chemistry set level up logic.
There might be hidden skill for the hopscrotch, but I'm not 100& sure.

I didn't preorder this one. I thought I'd wait and see what people thought of the game play.

Anyone know what will be in the patch?

There was already a patch posted at Sims/EA but then they took it down till after the release. It's supposed to have the things like memories and other things that are in the EP. So far I haven't read a lot of real excitement from people who have Generations already. I'll wait for the patch and see what it adds to game play before I plunk down 40.00 for the EP.

The patch has the new age sliders, memories, the camera, new traits, new lifetime rewards and a filter on lifetime rewards to make finding stuff easier (and the 'edit in cas' cheat)

Woo, even if I don't get Generations *sniff*, I'll be sure to get that patch! That is a lot for one patch, if you ask me. :o

Its pretty standard. With all previous expansion releases the new traits, lifetime rewards and interface/options changes have been released in a patch.

So far the only really interesting thing I've seen in the expansion is the chemistry set, which, among other things, allows sims to get younger for the first time. The pranks and make believe toys are OK, but after school, homework, eating, showering and sleeping is kinda hard to find time for it. Didn't see anything particularly amusing about the bachelor parties; it's a standard party with a NPC dancing - mostly alone - in swinsuit.

No new town or skills. Was it too much to ask???

Another thing I've noticed with the patch is you discover traits just by talking to sims now - even when you're not talking about anything relevant to the trait or using 'get to know' and possibly some more career bugs but I'm still exploring that one

Now we can adjust the length of the various life stages individually.  If you want your elders to live longer, just give them a longer time as elders.  Same for any of the other life stages.

A number of new interactions.  Sims that went to one of the boarding school have the option to talk about their school but Sims that didn't go to that particular school seem to find it boring.  One of my existing characters now has the ability to salute because he apparently attended the military school.

The memory notifications do get annoying but there is an option to turn them off.

Overall, I think the new interactions give the game more depth but I'm disappointed they didn't give us any new skills or careers other than the daycare.

People, I too hate the lack of skills and careers, but let's face it. Generations isn't really a real expansion pack. According to many interviews from producers, this is just a 'pack' of things that should have been initially included in the base game.

That's why I'm waiting till the price drops before I buy it. Not having a new town really killed it for me. In my mind I just can't justify the purchase.

The one where your mood continually increases - it was from the well rested moodlet removing the wrong amount of mood so with the really cheap beds your mood would go down but most people play with a good bed (if there's one thing to splash out on when you're poor, its a good bed!) so your mood stays high even when it shouldn't - if you play in short bursts you might never notice it but if you play for 4-6 sim weeks at a time like I do, its really obvious. I just had a sim that was publicly disgraced, lost a friend, very tired and the house was dirty and his mood bar was maxed out. After late night they seemed to fix that one and either that revealed another similar bug or they put in a new one - where your mood goes negative instead of positive relative to the actual moodlets listed and you have to reload to fix it.

Where was all this awesome improvised furniture when I was building my dorm?  :D

Good items to be sure.  I'm glad to see my options for high-tier plumbing and kitchen expanding.  I always hate using the same shower in every build.

Oh, sweet irony, deliver me from coincidence.

That's my opinion too.  (Things that should have been included in the first Sims 3.)  I did not get three sets, however.  I ordered from Amazon.  I've installed it with no glitches so far.  I also installed the patches that EA said I needed.  I like the memories, too.  Sims 2 had memories too, but not as elaborate.  I played a town that I have been playing awhile, but decided I needed to start fresh to figure out the new strategies.

My opinion, is that I love this EP.  Despite all of the negatives, the positives outweigh them.  I find it absolutely amusing on some of the new things these little guys do, especially ghost stories.  Now that is really cute.  Anyway, so far, I love everything about the new additions and do not really have anything negative to say, except, when I put chest hair on my sim and go back to live mode, the hair is gone.  Not quite sure what is up with that yet, but that is minor.  I will say, that if your sim, pre-Generations, had a few romantic interests and is now involved with someone, it will come out and the sim will have a "casenova" reputation and your new relationship will suffer, but nothing that flowers and sweet talk won't solve, for the time being, lol. :)

Totally love this ep, possibly the best one so far in sims 3 series.  There's not much stuff as far as Buy/Build but the animations and interactions make up for this.  There's just so much it's a little overwhelming...definitely going to be some time before I get around to doing all there is to do.

Most of the ep is dedicated to kids and teens, which is about time.  Carl and company are going to have their hands full doing walkthoughs with this one. :D  The cutest things I have seen so far is watching the stars and reading bedtime stories...got kinda misty on the last one...stupid pixtels. :D
Memories are becoming annoying as every time a sim breathes there's a memory being recorded. ::)

Gameplay is very smooth on my machine, for which I am very thankful.  There are many threads on the official forum that are really ugly about ppl not being able to play. :o

First impressions is it's going to take up to release of pets to get everything done in this pack. ;D

I think this EP has been hard on my computer, but I think it's been good so far. I am rebuilding my legacy house at the moment and am between generations with kids, so we'll see how many of the interactions I notice so far. However, there have been a few build/buy things that I like, and installation (and patching!) went really smoothly. So we'll see how this goes! More soon...

Well I played Generatons for a few hours tonight and so far I'm loving it. The new interactions are just too cute. I found myself laughing at my game a few times. Watching my sim do a little booty dance in the sprinkler had me cracking up.  Especially their expressions on some things. When the kids get punished the expressions they give when they sulk are priceless. Telling scary stories is just awesome. Taking the baby for a walk in the stroller is cute except that I noticed that the stroller won't go up and down hills, huh? When your sim reaches a hill they take the baby out of the stroller and carry it until you get passed the hill and then they put it back in.

One thing I noticed and don't quote me on this because maybe I haven't seen all the paintings as of yet but today my painter drew a new painting I've never seen before. But it could be that I just haven't seen that one yet so maybe it was just a coincidence. It would be nice if there were some new paintings out there though. Also, and maybe it was just another weird thing but it seemed like my toddler's motives didn't decrease as fast. Maybe the patch (maybe) might have fixed a few things. I still want to try out the well-rested bug though, didn't get a chance to do that yet, but will.

Over all I think it's a exciting new expansions with some interesting new gameplay. Will continue to play and hopefully share more tomorrow.

Has the patch been released yet? If it has, it's not showing up on my launcher  :(

Is it because I'm in the UK?

I like the asking out on date option., a good date gives a positive moodlet at the end, like a group outing. The only issue I encountered is that I couldn't use the phone 'Ask out on Date' option because I didn't have a good enough relationship (even as friends!). A nice work around is to 'Invite Out' and then give flowers which turns the outing into a date.

My first impressions are all positive! Except for the wonky inventory in my Dynasty game. Other than that, this EP is awesome!! I love the strollers, except it is a little weird they use them for everything! I finally had to put them in the family inventory. Using a stroller to walk a few inches to train them to potty? Ridiculous. But all the new stuff is really sweet!  ;D

Well, I have to admit EA won me over. I was not going to buy this because it just didn't seem like it would interest me. However my husband surprised me with a copy as an anniversary present. It installed without a hitch and is playing very smoothly.

I delete a lot of the memories because some of them are really inane, but that is easy to do. I love the ghost story interaction. I think that's really cute. I installed all the new homes but made my own park.

One little glitch so far. The new baby got a doll from Great Aunt...somebody and I put it in the crib with the baby. When he aged up to toddler the doll vanished. It's not in anyone's inventory. Just gone.

Overall, and I haven't had a lot of play time yet, I would say this is a fun EP.

Yes, I knew it was the imaginary friend doll. The little blurb that appeared up in the corner said there was a gift and something like if the child played with it there would be a relationship. I don't know why it disappeared either. I haven't opened again up my game since that happened. Maybe it will be there when I open up to play? We'll see.

I have to say, my expectations were not high, but I'm pleasantly surprised. The features introduced may not be as major as, say, WA or LN, but there are many of them and they make the game so much more realistic, kind of like how Ambitions randomly introduced laundry.

I especially like the new LTWs. There's like, what, 10 of them? Awesome.

I am liking this game the more I play it.  The proms are rabbit holes, but the reading is hilarious.  They got pictures and one of my teens got crowned prom queen and her boyfriend was prom king.  The pictures you can hang up or put on the desk.  I also got pics of their expressions when one sat on a whoopie cushion and one where she got scared by the computer image.  Guess I will have to start a new album on the gallery, lol.  This game is very amusing and there is so much to do yet. :)

@lilygirl : Yeah, I know they don't do homework, and some don't even do housework. I expected my kids to help with the housework, but they only create more!!!!! LOL

I bought it and it is ok, but don't run out and buy it if you don't feel the need. It isn't that much more to it than ambitions.

I completely disagree...

Generations rounds out our sims, the interactions are now far more realistic and there's reason to progress relationships with pomp and ceremony. I never saw a reason before to have anything other than a private wedding but now I enjoy the entire realism of the wedding ceremonies.

I used to make Sims in CAS that were already married but now I generally make a couple that are housemates and make them work for their relationship lol. The guy usually gives a gift to his girl then asks her out on a date or two, after date three they woohoo and then the guy will propose, by this point they will have enough friends for a small wedding ceremony, then they happily spend their honeymoon time building a few skills and creating the next generation.

The new doll adds another aspect for the toddlers that I felt was somewhat missing from the teddy and thats they are instantly drawn to playing with their favorite toy.

I haven't gotten as far as playing with children and teens as of yet, but I am looking forward to that, being able to read a child to sleep (which I haven't seen the interaction for with my toddler yet) and being able to punish bad behavior.

In all I am over the moon with this expansion pack, it fills in the blanks for 'family life', in much the same way ambitions filled in the blanks for jobs and careers.

I love the fact that I can control how many days are in each life stage rather than have to cheat my way past annoying babies that are nothing but demanding.

For me Generations is the most interesting expansion pack so far as it draws together all the mismatched pieces of those before.

Kindest Regards
KJ

As I'm playing it I like it more and more. I guess I don't know how to play sims very well. LOL.

I actually LOVE Generations. My biggest critic to The Sims 3 was the lack of interesting social interactions so this expansion pack is great for me. I think it adds a lot of new stuff to the game, it makes it more... playable actually. Before Generations, I found myself stuck in the Sims routine, like always doing the same things... eat, shower, work, sleep... and they didn't do much besides that. Late Night added some interesting stuff but family realtionships were still boring, so combining Late Night and Generations together makes the game much much better. It adds a whole new "spontaneous" dimension to it. Now I can't wait for Pets since I never had it in Sims 2!!! :D

I love generations, I wish they released this earlier than the other EPs. It brings back the things I missed in Sims2, most of all the Memories album. That's what I looked for Sims 3, to be able to make a story in the middle of the game with labels. I totally, totally love it to be able to look back at a Sims life through the ages, how they looked like when they were babies, toddlers, children.  ;D

I am "Having a Blast" with Generations. My poor house needs a good cleaning though!

Hired a butler for my sims and he does the baby feeding and diaper changing so that the parents have more time with the toddlers. The butler also gives good massages when pregnant (though I have to be sure the husband isn't home because then they flirt).

Does the "bulter" come with generations and if so how do you get it?! I'm also having trouble with the imaginary friends--- my toddler nor child has "bonded" with their doll even though my toddler literally  plays with it all day until I  put him to bed. Also can plant sims have the imaginary friends? I just got University life and I have 2 plant sims and I was wondering if they could have them.

The butler came with Late Night expansion, Olivia, not Generations. You hire a butler the same way you hire a maid, repairperson, etc. Just use the phone and call for services. If you don't have Late Night you don't have the option to hire a butler, of course.

I just recently got generations about a month ago, and I haven't done much with it yet but I can't wait to make an imaginary friend real. I do like strollers though :D
