It needs a certain amount of handiness though - something like 5 skill points.

I also did not know about the doorbell thing!
Just yesterday I discovered that when you are on your Sim's Personal Inventory tab, you can drag it over all the way to the right side of the screen so that you can see more objects at once!

When you live, live with your soul, not with your time.
When you love, love with your heart, not with your mind.
When you want to be something, the world can't define, open up your eyes.

I only just found out about the doorbell the last time I played, as well. :P I like the 'posh' option best, but it irritates me that you have to make them complete the upgrade first before you get to hear what the doorbell sounds like.

Yeah, and what if you don't like the sound after they complete the upgrade? That happened to me! One of my Sekemoto descendants upgrading the doorbell to some obnoxious buzzer that was like "Krrang!" and it took me a while to get around to changing it, so I just played with the sound effects muted.

I totally just changed my doorbell because of this thread. :P

Considering I made the majority of my rookie mistakes playing the Sims 2 (i.e., not knowing how to feed my sim, not putting doors on houses, etc...) when I got the Sims 3 I actually decided to read the manual back to back, lol.
Nevertheless, I had no idea how to get a romantic relationship. I asked a sim to move in with mine, and they were living together for quite a while before I realized there was a "Romantic..." option.
Arlo Bunch is my favorite sim
