I have them retire when they reach the end of their career which is normally the moment they turn elder if they complete it as an Adult.

My Sims only work to try out careers, get bored  and quit ( well I guess that's me ;))  .   I usually have my Sims  live frugally until they can buy into a business. I go around town and mooch every free thing to sell  and use the money for that. So my Sims get rich pretty quick and can then spend time building skills and fooling around.

The main provider of the house usually works until he/she dies. Sometimes I'm nice and I fulfill their wish of wanting to retire (that is if they get that wish :) ) But most of the time if the household is rich enough and they get to retire once they hit elder and explore other skills.

Most of my elder sims are grandparents so they often retire to look after the grandkids whilst the parents work on their own goals.

Only if they get a wish for it. Most of the time, my female sims get the wish to quit when they have their second child (or first set of twins).

When I realize they only have a few days left to live, I feel bad and let them retire.  I am so mean.  :P

I'm making the founder of my Dynasty work forever because he just works 3 days a week from 9-11 so it gives him something to do.. And gives me an extra 5000 simoleons a week :)

It all depends on what strategy I have planned for the sim. In my Max Skills sim (I use that example a lot, don't I?) I need him to only get to level 10 of different careers just for the side effect of it. Becoming a level 10 science prof was a must have, as he will be able to improve objects inhome, which makes him pretty practicle in the family. Completing level 10 of the Fashion career is handy to, considering the permanent +20 moodlet he will reseive from it, but isn't a must.

You see, it al depends on the strategy.

@Leto Yeah I use the same type of method. It really depends on what I'm doing. Mostly I do the jack of all trades type deal because its handy to have a sim thats handy! *Insert Joke drum sound*

I do not make many sims, preferring to make few, good sims and I find that don't pay very well and in my opinion self employment especially as a guitarist playing for tips is much more funafter you get past the skilling. However, I always get to level 10 in certain careers because of the perks. I normally go for the thief branch of the criminal career for the nifty statue because of the neat boost it gives, the cooking career for the epic fridge which also gives a small mood boost when in the same room, the stylist career for the invaluable +20 moodlet and this time I am considering the firefighter career just to get the 100% unique handiness upgrades statistic but I suppose a fire engine would be cool aswell. Of course, being mad about self employment the moment I reach level 10 I quit my careers as all i'm really interested in is the perks :D. I'm also wondering if the film director branch is worth pursuing for the director's seat of power but I dont know what it does so if anyone could tell me i'd be very thankful ;D. by the way, sorry for the huge wall of text.

It's typically difficult for me to give up a career that earns a good paycheck.  I also used to find it annoying to have a sim puttering around the house all day.  But thanks to a glitch I had about a year ago where a sim died at work and the Grimmy never showed to pick him up, I started having them retire well before the age meter filled up.  But thanks to this glitch, I learned about giving retired sims a useful and fun hobby (like painting or fishing).

I don't plan on having any of the immortals in my dynasty retire, though.  I want to see just how much money they can make by getting raises at the top of their career.

I don't retire my working sims because they can make more money working and at level 10 they only work a few hours a few days a week that I still have a lot of extra time with them. Also, i think I would get a little bored without a plan for something for them to do.

My sims always stay in their jobs until they get the wish to quit or retire - most of my sims wish to retire when they reach elder, but some want to work until they die.

I have my elders retire, because, well, I find it realistic after all. I rarely "quit" jobs, but I do frequently when the townie that has moved in has a job that I do not like.

I have the husband keep working, or switch jobs. The wife is self-employed, so she works as she feels.
With hubby away, wifey can play.
