Is there any way to make a restaurant that is not a rabbit hole?

If you have the World Adventures Expansion Pack, you can use the Food Register (the one you find in overseas markets) from the Community Objects section in Build Mode. I find it works pretty well as the base for a casual restaurant. Welcome to the forum, by the way!  :)

Be aware that children are unable to purchase food at the register, and there are no group servings. An adult must buy food for a child and give it to them, unless you have a mod that allows children to order food from a register like everybody else.

I wish you could do it like in the Sims 2 where they had the hosts stand, the servers, and the special oven for cooks. That was pretty cool.

If you have the Chun Co. Teppenyaki Grill or any store kitchen set, you can add those items to give it that "restraunt" feel. Yes, your Sims can make ordinary meals on those stoves. Or you could use a Professional Bar from Late Night which auto-assigns a Mixologist.
