The best advice would probably be preventative. If you know you are the type to cheat, then never look them up. I have a long history of cheating in video games, and as a consequence I do not know off hand any cheats for games anymore. I generally don't even like to know what cheats are possible. Case in point, I didn't know there was a teleportation cheat, and now I have to live with the knowledge that I don't really have to put up with the lack of convenient roads in china.

I've largely grown out of it now I'd say, simply because before things like gathering money to fund an empire or whatever were an obstacle to my playing the game. Now I enjoy the challenge. I might still like to stack an Empire Earth scenario in my favor now and then, pretend to be some sort of enforcer of the peace with the benefit of massively more advanced tech, but for the most part I enjoy the games.

The lifetime rewards allow you to cheat legitimately anyway. I've settled for age freezing my primary couple, allowing me to ultimately do everything. What I have now is more patience. I don't make enough to build whatever I want when I like, but I have enough to expand my house on a whim, and it takes me long enough between sessions that I get to do large, satisfying additions (building my house is half the game for me). I doubt I will ever get the moodlet manager since I would abuse it, and I would get bored very fast, but for the less patient, or those who are still on a clock, I think it's great.

I guess ultimately, you really can stop cheating. Telling yourself that you can't doesn't help, and I think there is some merit in trying a challenge, binding yourself to the rules of others if you cant follow your own. Find a way to give yourself that chance to experience the game without cheating, to see if you enjoy it more or not. Or you can do what I did and stretch out the aging so much that you have 65,000 LTHP by the time you hit young adult, thus freeing you up to fart around doing whatever you please for the rest of eternity. I'm going to master a whole bunch of skills and build some mansions. I might even try this farming sooner or later.

Yeah Deklitch, I use the building cheats (moveobjects on, constrainfloorelevation false, etc) so much that I consider them tools rather than cheats. Lol. Building on houseboats is kinda forcing me to not use CFE that much there though.

Ya know MeestorMark I'm with you there with them building cheat codes.  I mean "technically" the way I see it they aren't really cheat codes.  I dunno if this is true or not but I think the fine creators of the game thought they put this in as a non-cheat then it could make building a bit longer process to learn and when it comes to unwrapping or downloading a new game the buyer usually wants to be able to play the game right away without taking the time to learn stuff.  But to me I'm still getting a feel for the building cheats anyways cause I've only been back to playing the game now for a couple of weeks and I was one of the very first people to buy the game when it was first released.

Gardening, cooking, nectarology, and mixology all make it so sims with access to life fruit can for all practical purposes be immortal too. That is all coded in the game as well. So I don't consider them "cheating" unless you are doing a specific legacy or other challenge where you are competing with others and they are not allowed.

Money is so easy to make in the game now, it is almost more work to type in "motherlode". Lol. Okay, overstatement for effect. But making money is ridiculously easy now in a large variety of ways.

whkoziol, I think they put in the building codes as a way to let us gamers who like to create and share to have more creativity, and explore aesthetics more than the standard building codes allow. Plus, when EA builds it is obvious they use them as well, so they see their use. But you can also make objects unusable by using moveobjects on so I think that is why they default them to off. But the building cheats don't really offer anyone any kind of "competitive advantage". Maybe buydebug does get you access to things you would otherwise have to travel or earn other ways. So that one can certainly be cheating to a purist depending on how it is used.

Have a question.....Does going into the game options and changing the life of a sim to be longer as a form of a cheat or do most of you leave it on it's default settings?  Also, does this include the other sims and pets in your household?

Do a challenge or something. It helps you get better at micromanaging and you won't feel the need to cheat as much.

Changing the life span in options is not strictly cheating, however, it affects all the sims in your game.  It will also affect all future games unless you reset it to default.  I usually play normal life span and never change this.  There are lots of "legal" ways to lengthen the life of individual sims.  (unless you are playing a challenge where life extensions are banned.)

I think I have already said this, but, with all the "legal" ways to get your sims the things they need, cheating just is not worth it.  The challenge is to find, and use, all the different methods available to increase life, obtain money, increase happiness etc.  Somewhere on here I gave a method of making a million simoleons in less then a week.  I've got that down to 3 days!  Why bore yourself with typing motherlode 20 times when you can play the game and have fun getting that money.  Having fun, and meeting challenges (your own or those set by others) is what the game is about in my opinion.

Happy simming.

I use the motherlode cheat all the time, but sometimes I try to play without cheating, and it's really fun to try. The funny thing is, when your sims don't have a lot of money, they have the option when chatting with another sim to "worry about money"

The only cheat I use...Is the motherlode cheat.

Simply because I can't get any of the other cheats to work! XD However, I haven't used the cheat in a long time. I have sims that make money.

As to cheating..I never tired for sims to cheat on one another.

I hate starter homes so usually I will make a sim family, then build them a complete home, with nice furnishings, in edit town. Then use the freerealestate cheat to move them in.

I love cheating. It's fun. Why would someone want to stop cheating? I thought I was the only one who cheated. But I guess there are many others that cheat. Ahh, the mother lode cheat. I no longer use it! I now makes way too much! How? Type in "Testingcheatsenabled true" Then type in "familyfunds (Sim's name here) 99999999 (or what ever you want)... Faster then typing in "motherlode"

I've tried to stop cheating once, um. I didn't last 2 minutes :P lol so I gave up and just kept cheating. Just love to cheat. There is no harm in cheating. It makes my game more interesting being able to control their relationships and bars.  ;D

I think the point a lot of us are getting to is, if cheating helps you enjoy the game, then there's no harm in it, that's how I always see it.
I have played a lot of challenges (and failed a lot of them too) and those are great to give you a new aspect of gameplay if you're bored. Yet I think a lot of the issue is, are you bored with your games? Do you eventually get tired of your Sim having money or being on needs-static the whole time? If so, then maybe you should think about ways you can cut back on cheating and learn to play a different way to reintroduce yourself to the whole other aspect of this game.

This game is a Simulation. You can make it however you want. When I first get expansions I often times will cheat so I can get familiar with the game. Don't be ashamed if you enjoy adding money to your sim's home via cheating. Whatever helps you enjoy the game and how you play the game is entirely up to you and it's not frowned upon in any situation. My boyfriend LOVES to build. He spends most of his time in build/buy mode and not with actual Sims. They just don't entertain him like they do me. This is a game meant for anyone to enjoy how they choose to enjoy it whether it's building, cheating, or quitting and restarting different games over and over (like me).

Now to switch gears - the game, in my opinion, is fun with or without cheats. Cheating is tempting and it's hard to discipline yourself to not use those infamous "Ctrl-Shft-C" commands. I'm sure that all forumers here have cheated at one time or another especially because some cheat codes are there to help you (like ResetSim when your sim gets stuck). What I recommend - if you have the strength to do so - is to make your own Sim (just one to break yourself into it) put them on the legacy lot (you know the one, the one that leaves you with 1,800 to start) and give yourself a goal that's more towards what you cheat to achieve. Like: "I will earn X amount of Simoleons"
or
"I will find a way through insertmethod(elixirs, potions, Lifetime Rewards) to control my Sim's needs"

A challenge is great if you can stick with them. I highly recommend the challenges we have here. Just remember that this game is about enjoyment, do what you enjoy.

Just... don't. I know it sounds pretty obvious, but for me, when I quit cheating, I went cold turkey. I still cheat now though, usually only to try to fix bugs in the game. I am of the personal opinion cheating makes it too easy. I like The Sims to be a challenge.

Of course, as others have said, it's a personal choice. If you don't want to cheat, stop pressing Ctrl+Shift+C. If you do want to cheat, do it.

Mostly I cheat with CAS to give the townies better clothes, hair, sometimes different traits or lifetime wishes. I don't use money cheats, since I like to start out in a starter house and build my family over generations. I just a nudge of the mood slider bars now and then. I'm not good at challenges anyway. I get too caught up with the storyline I'm playing out to remember all the challenge rules.

Fun thing to do is CAS the zombies as they stand outside during a full moon. Give them a whole new look when they head home.
