Dead owners

What happens to pets when the owner(s) die. I know you can't make a family of just pets you have to have an adult.  I want to make specific dogs (Mine) and be able to adopt them throughout the game. I chose the Animal Adopter LW. If I create an owner for them then kill the owner off, what happens to the dogs?

The social worker comes and takes them away, and then it takes to the start up screen (the one where you either choose household, create a family, et cetera). Hope this helps and welcome to the forum :)
