I'm missing something obvious. I have mixologist level 8, 2 star celeb. He created 11 unique drinks, and served around 300 of them, mostly at home practicing, most of them are now perfect or outstanding. He moonlight in hot spots every night, he ordered a lot of same drinks and still he hasn't learned any recipe!? I would really use a hint here.

He needs to purchase a speciality drink from any of the clubs before he can 'learn' the recipe.  It is almost like him asking that other bartender to specifically make him a Cherry Casanova and then he watches and learns.

Since you said he has purchased drinks before, look in the skill journal under Mixology and scroll to the bottom.  It should list the drinks that he has learned.  The more learned drinks the better as it helps him work in the swankier clubs.  I hope this helps you.   :)

My Sim is at level 6 Mixology and level 2 Celebrity and he has learned 2 drinks so far.  He has only been to one club twice but ordered a different drink each time.
Good luck to you.  ;)

And I checked, depending on ingredient, popular name also get "Lifegiving" or "with Twist" etc. additions in names. I just made Burning Flaming Waylon :D

So glad it worked for you.  Some simmies are slower than others to learn anything and we have to keep pushing them to learn.  Just like little children.
Your drink name sounds delicious -  ;D

Wow Anuksha! That's some great information on the different drinks. Too bad you don't get any good moodlets from life fruit or flame fruit though.

So far my sim has like 20 unique drinks.  Everytime she makes a drink it is unique and sometimes another sim won't get anything, what seems like forever.  I guess we have to be patient, but I am the type, I want it now, lol. :)

Salty it seems to be same like inventing, I usually break the action and send Sim to do something else if after few Sim hours no recipe come out. Sometimes I get 3 or 4 recipes in that time.
Sophie, it would be nice to get some moodlets too, since having different name isn't that much of a big deal. But getting 4 days out of 1 life fruit without any cooking skill is really great. And also great thing is that once you reach beginning of life stage, you still get additional days, and nothing is wasted. That is great addition.

My sim went to a dance club for the first time, and chose a drink at random. When she started to get really tired, I looked up the name of energy drinks, and she ordered one. It didn't give her any energy boost. Wasn't it supposed to?

No; it should have given her a 5 hour moodlet that doesn't let her pass out even if her energy is completely depleted.

Interesting. It was near the beginning of the game, so maybe the mixologist at the bar wasn't experienced enough.

From Carl's article, I learned that mixology works well with the pursuit of celebrity. Has anyone tested the effect of the Party Animal trait in Late Night? I'm wondering whether it's become more useful in the new environment.

I do have a five star celebrity and she has maxed her mixology.  I am not sure the two really compliment each other, but I do know, this sim dances all of the time and when she is sleeping, she gets that little dancing dude figure in her thought bubble, lol. :)

I've read Carl's Guide and also the Mixology chapter in the Prima Guide, but I have an unanswered question: how do you know when you need to start stocking the bar, and with what ingredients?

LlamaMama, that question made me check it in game and now I'm more confused than before :(
First, I took the same Sim that in one game used harvestables, and start checking, but he kept using regular ingredients even after maxing mixology, then gardening, and then cooking. After that I sent him to moonlight and after only one night moonlightning (I stocked that bar but didn't get a chance to use ingredients) once he was home, he was using harvestables stocked in his bar at home.
After that, I start new game with same Sim and send him to moonlight as soon as he hit level 2 (it is not possible before). But he didn't start using ingredients until level 6 mixology, and after 3 nights moonlighting. He did use it in community bars, when I stock and chose manually ingredients for next drink, and he got some nice tips and comments for those drinks.
So it is not clear for me neither, but trick is to moonlight and possibly use harvestables (or bought one) while moonlighting first and then at home. You don't need to garden, cook, learn popular recipes nor to create new drinks. I would like to hear other experiences since this is still not so clear for me.
