Apartment Living
« on: October 30, 2010, 03:46:05 AM »
Hi I just thought I'd share some interesting things I've noticed with my first family in an apartment (in Sunset Valley). I have noticed 3 things so far:

1 - The other residents seem to be uncontrollable sims like maids, firemen, and even the paper boy.

2 - someone has been leaving books in the entrance hall that I can simply add to my sims inventory.

3 - having to take the paper all the way upstairs again to read it is very annoying.

Anyone have anything else to comment on?

The fact that NPCs actually have houses now is awesome :). It makes it that bit more realisitic. Also, have you tried placing a park bench outside the apartment? It'd save you running upstairs to read the paper.

I try to get the paper on my Sim's way home from work.  I have to stop her "Going Home" queue and have her read the paper, but it's working ok.  I don't think you could place a park bench outside the apartment building.  We're not allowed to put down anything outside of our unit.

I had a repo man living next door.  It's interesting how they worked out the neighbors.

I've had the books, too.  Some are pretty expensive and just get sold.

If I forget to get the paper, I just go down and grab the paper and put it in their inventory and then go back up and they read it.  Beats taking the sim back downstairs to get it. :)

There should be a cheat code that allows placing things there but I'm not sure which one.

@Saltypaws

I am so glad you shared that tip for the newspaper. It is so much easier that way. ;D

I thought it was funny, my maid lived next door to me and every day he would leave his apartment take the elevator downstairs then he would come upstairs and clean my apartment then he would go downstairs and then back upstairs to go home. I never noticed him actually going anywhere else and I never tried to socialize with him since I was focused on other things. It was just so funny that he wouldn't just come from his apartment to mine without going downstairs!

Ugh, I see the babysitters don't work in apartment buildings. :(  Every time I call one, she just gets trapped in the lobby, in the black space by the elevator.   Between the lack of gigs, the empty nightclubs and the elevator issues, I'm afraid my enthusiasm for Late Night is quickly waning...

EDIT:  oh hold on - false alarm, I think.  Apparently the apartment door was locked.  Still doesn't explain why the babysitter was trapped in the void, instead of stopped outside the door.  But hey, at least it's not a bug... I think, I hope. :)

I noticed the books too!  Sometimes they show up in my family inventory, not just by the entrance.

For the newspapers, some buildings have benches in the lobby area.

I agree, it was clever to have NPCs live there.

I added a couple high-rises to my little world that I created (faster loading and all) and a noticed that a lot of people live there, which is really nice because now I don't have to worry as much about building/placing houses for sims to move into.

I dislike that all the High Rises are odd Lot sizes and not just the standard, it means buldozing lots and not getting the little clusters I like.  :-\

I wish it was more like apartment life in TS3. There were multiple apartments in each building to choose from. Since I need a second bedroom for my butler I would like more options in the nicer buildings.

I thought it was odd that you couldn't get a butler in most of the apartments since they don't have 2 bedrooms!

Do you mean The Sims 2?  TS3 is what we're playing now.

I'd like to move a few sims in Sunset Valley to a newly built block of flats. I've already evicted 2 families and put them inside the building. I've only been able to dd 6 of them in there. It's a bit of a problem because I'd like to save space in SV and add those new and fancy bars, discos and whatnot and so I have to look for big spaces. Apartment blocks require a bit of space themselves and that's why I'm asking about moving sims in. Is more than 6 sims possible? If I move those guys in there will all families have their own flats or will they live in the same flat? It would be stupid if they had to live in the same flat :/

Speaking technically, no more than 8 Sims can occupy any lot/household.  Now, speaking about the new apartments/flats that came in Late Night, Sims can only live in the one unit at the top of the building.  There are other Sims who live next door, but they aren't playable Sims or townies.  Those Sims are NPCs (Non-Playable Characters) like repo men, maids, etc.  The vast majority of the apartments/flats are quite small, usually with only one bedroom.  There are a couple with 4 and 6 bedrooms, but that's it.

I hope this is helpful.
