Editing existing games/towns with Late Night
« on: October 31, 2010, 08:13:31 PM »
Is anyone else finding this insanely frustrating? Putting the new lots on for Ambitions was easy, but I can't get the space in my favourite game at Sunset Valley to add all the buildings from Late Night.

If there is a way to edit the size of the lots using world editor, can someone pretty please tell me how? I have to try to find space for what seems like a zillion 64x64 lots to put in buildings that are rectangle and really don't need that much space.

I thought that was only a Bridgeport problem.

Bridgeport is 'missing' buildings, so when you get an opportunity to do something at Doo Peas Tower for example, you can't because Doo Peas Tower isn't there.

I'm trying to put Plumbob Pictures Backlot and the bars into an existing game in Sunset Valley, and have discovered the space issue. I've bulldozed quite a few empty houses and lots but it's driving me mad.

This is one of the confusing things you just have to figure out in the new town.  It's now  Steve's building complex.  At least that is where you go for the business/journalism stuff.

I have managed to stuff all the new buildings here and there in my sunset valley town but it wasn't easy. I ran out of room for the last of the apartment buildings, and most of the new lots don't meet the road.

I'm pretty sure the only way to add roads is using the Create-A-World tool, but then you're playing a whole different ball game.

It really is no big deal once you get the hang of it.  I've been remodeling Twinbrook for ages.  I added a lot of lots.  lol  You just go to Edit Town BEFORE you start your game with your Sim.  (It's ok if you are playing a game with your Sims already there, just hit Edit Town before you start playing them.)  Then choose the CAW thing.  The one for bulding lots is at the bottom of the queue.  Select the size lot you want, it will NOT match already existing buildings, which is a royal pain, so you have to choose a lot size that is bigger and expect the building you place to be in the middle of that lot.  Driveways and walkways will not match up so you have to extend them, and sometimes they will not quite reach the road so you have to try a different spot.

Once you've got the size selected, slowly go over the terrain until you find a green lit cursor.  If the terrain is uneven you are going to have to do a LOT of terrain modification using the terrain tool, but don't use it until after the building is placed.  That is the tricky part.  Finding flat land that isn't underwater or something is hard and so is finding an area big enough for what you want.  So it takes a bit of fiddling around and a lot of time and patience but you CAN remodel an area to suit your needs.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

@Joria

I just found the world edit tool and I've been experimenting tonight. I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this.

Does CAW work with the latest version?  I tried running it after getting LN and it said "wrong version" etc.

I got irritated enough trying to edit Sunset Valley that I downloaded the World Builder tool and began a new large island.  All the public and new city buildings are in, but I haven't put in any single family houses yet, and I'm not happy with the Gym I designed.  It's really rough still.  No spawners or anything, very flat.  Not sure I got the camera routing correct.  I like Sunset Valley, and hadn't wanted to demo it for the new stuff.  I may have to though, because I'm not sure how long this island is going to take to complete.  My twin and I were kicking Sim'd up names back and forth, so if it ever sees the light of day, Sima Sima is the name. LOL.  Until then I redesigned my main Sim, and dropped him in a new game in Bridgeport.  I'm seriously digging those muscles they can have now.   :D  Of course I've lost all interest in my other Star, and his family, since they can't really do any of the new things right now.

Any advice is welcome for redoing Sunset Valley without having to start with a fresh Sims family though.  How much do you change?  How did the editing of the lots go, especially the ones with the unlevel terrains?

*hugz!*

I hope when they release the patch they will address this problem among the other many problems. Hopefully they'll make it like Ambitions where the lots are already in place. Otherwise I'll go bonkers editing Sunset Valley everytime I start a new game. @_@

You don't really need to edit it every time you start a new game.  Just make your edits to the town, then save the game (without actually choosing a household to play).  Then every time you want to start a new game, just load this saved game, choose your household and start as normal.

Make sure you give the saved game a meaningful name so you know it's the one you use to start new games with!  I find it very easy to get confused.

Man I am glad that I'm not the only one having the issues with the towns. I didn't bother trying to put Bridgeport in my other towns. I just brought my family from Sunset Valley over to Bridgeport. However that caused me to pull my hair out because there were no lots available to place my 64x64 lot. I finally had to move the graveyard. I was really not trying to get into that CAW tool. I'm not very good with things like that. I lost patience with the create a pattern tool. But I am seeing through everyone else that I'm going to need to get over my fears and use the tool. :(

I've never used the CAW tool.  Too much for my tired brain to deal with.

Today I decided I wanted some hot spots in SV.  Oh, boy was I in for a shock!  I happily went along putting in appropriate sized lots, (a ROYAL pain because nothing wanted to match roads and there was only so much space----I used the something or other Point space, bull dozed all existing lots and went to town), getting as much flat space as I could.  Not much available.  EA is hill happy.  Almost all of the hot spots require huge lots because they are all weird sizes, like 46 x32 or something else strange.  So, I got the large lots placed and put buildings on them  Of course, the terrain all went wonky, with only one exception.  I tried to flatten the lot and smooth edges but you cannot do that!  You get a message saying the homeowners association won't allow that!  So unless I move a bunch of perfectly good and happy houses elsewhere in SV, on newly created lots that I CAN smooth, and then use the now empty old lots for the Bridgeport buildings, I won't have the Bridgeport buildings.  I opted for a Bridgeport free SV!  If I want some discos, dance clubs and dives I guess I have to build them myself and hope it works.

Joria, you can put 7 out of 9 BP buildings in already existing lots in SV (and keep it functional) but that mean bulldozing many SV buildings and homes including Alto's, Landgraab's and Goth's place, maybe even Park, Old Pier Beach and some of the fishing spots. But you can place at least 2 of smaller buildings on already existing empty lots (One next to Agness, 180 Redwood pkwy, and one next to Coffee home, 455 Sunnyside blvd). I guess supermastering mixology won't be able in SV but some hot spots for dancing and outing can be placed without any problem. It also look weird to have all those tall building in small town environment such as SV so having Grind and Brightmore, and maybe Banzai Lounge on one of the large lots is quite enough, at least for me.
Where did you post photos of Bridgeport you are remodelling? Knowing your great building skills it must be great!
