Taking a laptop with you

I read somewhere that the Private Investigator needs to carry a laptop with him/her at all times.  How do you get one in your personal inventory?

Buy one in Buy Mode and place it on a desk.

In Live Mode, click and drag it to the sim's inventory. Laptops are considered portable objects by the game.
