Can my neighbourhood "die"?
« on: November 10, 2010, 05:03:02 PM »
After I've installed Late Night my neighborhood started to "die" quite fast (3 people in 1 week). It's not anything unusual since I set the life span to 190 days. I'd like to know if the game will generate new sims after the old ones die? I wouldn't like to encounter a situation where all my neighbors die and I'll have to move to Bridgeport.

Story Progression will sometimes kill off Sims if there are too many in a neighborhood, but it will also keep Sims in your neighborhood, it is the complicated and sometimes odd way story progression works. So you shouldn't have to worry.

The vanilla story progression is.. well, wonky, at best. Still, it *should* make sims procreate every blue moon, and spawn people whenever it needs to create co-workers/bosses/service npcs/mixologists/bouncers/etc; lastly, every once in a while if the neighborhood is too down (or even if it doesn't *sigh*) it *should* massively create a bunch of immigrants.
Note that this doesn't mean that the new immigrants will be able to buy any lots, so having a few cheap ones around doesn't hurt.

DISCLAIMER: *Should* = if your neighborhood isn't borked and already in it's way of exploding in a Big Fiery Ball Visible From Space.

@TGBlank:  I don't think everyone knows what BFBVFS is.  Abbreviations like that aren't good on this Forum.

@Monolito:  Your town won't die.  New families are generated frequently.  If you read the daily newspaper, you'll see the names of the new families, births, marriages, and deaths.

In short, play for a sim week more or so, if the place is still empty or if you start seeing odd bugs like duplicate people or glitched family trees, start over. Once the trial period is done and there's some signs of recovery, you *could* speed things up by bringing in a few families through edit world.

I haven't seen any bugs in my nighbourhood yet. The people died abroad as well. I was starting to wonder if it's possible for the town to die out.

Pam -> thank you very much for this advice! I canceled my newspaper service and, to be honest, never read it before too much ;)

I had done the same thing and then realized what all I was missing.  Sometimes it only tells you about a sports game if it's a slow news day.  If you have Late Night, it also tells you where the hot spots are for the night.

I had a little problem with my paper - I couldn't find it on my lot! I've got a butler (a...girl! She sleeps in my sim dude's bed with him XD) and I was afraid she throws my papers away as soon as they arrive. Luckily - she didn't. I used the "check news" option but it only told me about the sports game. I hope it will tell me about hot spots in the future because I tend to get into empty clubs :/
Last night I went to Plasma with 2 celeb stars. I befriended the bouncer and got in. After the club got closed I was told I'm not allowed in!
I teleported back to my house and my sim had to ride all the way back to Plasma so he could be kicked out of it. The club was closed and so he couldn't get in to get kicked out. That's just too stupid!

I have a Sim read the paper every day so I can track what's happening to my NPCs (I sometimes create families and move them into spare houses, just to see what they do).  Unfortunately, my paper is full of obituaries and new families moving in.  I very rarely get babies born outside of my legacy household, so the individual families of the neighbourhood do die.  The neighbourhood itself stays populated though.

I've played for around 2h and 20 of the people my sim knows died! That's really over the line! I wish NPC families could raise kids in order to keep their family line. Guess Maxis hasn't thought about it :/ Maybe in Sims 7... :P

My games are still spawning babies and the old townies get old and pass away, leaving their heirs behind.  I think in one game, I have Bella's granddaughter in it, from when she married Moritmar.  They had two children and they had children.  I only remember this, because I saw Bella walking around holding a toddler and she was elder.  I decided to change active households and it was her grand daughter.  I kinda kept an eye on them through the generations and it has been really interesting.  So I know mine are having kids, at this time, who knows what later will bring.  I have not played enough of LN as of yet, to see how the spawning goes.
Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because they taste funny?

It seems different people have different experiences with this.  I don't know how the code is weighted to encourage new marriages and families.  I put about a dozen families into the town before starting my legacy.  The 4th generation of my legacy family is now a teen, and only one of my previously created households remains, the daughter of a Sim I created as a toddler.  She looks like she's destined to die a spinster, so that will be the end of my creations.  There are a couple of NPC households that the game spawned near the start of my Legacy who seems to have better luck with marrying and breeding, but in general, the neighbourhood is being kept alive through new immigrants rather than the 'founding families'.

In my Dynasty family, the Wolff family has continued for four generations.  There are four in the current generation, so hopefully it will go on to 5 generations.

That's impressive!  I don't think any of my NPC households have managed more than one baby per generation.  I'd love to know what prompts the game to have new babies born so I could try and force the issue a bit.  Recently, I went through some of the empty houses, putting cribs and potties in.  Then I created four married couples and moved them into town (never making them the active household, of course!).  So far, nothing!

In my Barnacle Bay game, Shorty-John, as an Elder, married Misti Tolliver as a YA, and they have an infant who's been an infant for like a week. I've gotten three notices so far that Shorty-John is an old man and about to expire, so I've tried getting him over to meet his son Riesling.

Now I wish Shorty would just die. :)
