How to use Midas Touch?

I've consumed a Midas Touch elixir. I've got the "Golden" moodlet. However, I can't seem to get anything to turn to gold by touching it.

I've laid out all my lettuce and tomatoes which I've grown, so that I can pick them up one by one. It doesn't do anything. I've walked over and picked up my newspaper and tried to read it. It stays paper.

What gives?

I don't believe you can make veggies gold, it's a special interaction on things. You don't just touch it, you can click a chair and see a Midas Touch interaction. It's more for valuable things. You can also turn Sims with it, but only temporarily.

I find that they sell at the elixir consignment store for a lot of money, and I profit from them in that way, particularly when my alchemist sim makes them him/herself.
