THE WISEWOMAN OF FORGOTTEN HOLLOW

ww.01.16.jpg
My name is Willow Wisely, and I am not a witch, although some have called me that. I merely am a student of herbalism and fortunate enough to inhabit a property in Forgotten Hollow that has magical qualities. I also enjoy interfering in the lives of my fellow Sims -- but only for their own good.

ww.01.02.jpg
My teacher is the renowned hermit Rachel.

ww.01.09.jpg
I met Rachel in Granite Falls. I was trying to escape from an over-friendly bear.

ww.01.10.jpg
Running through the woods, I came across a small opening almost entirely obscured by brambles. That would make a good hiding place, I thought.

ww.01.05.jpg
Inside, I seemed to be surrounded by branches. It didn't matter which way I moved, leaves and branches were in my way. Panic-stricken, I pushed them aside, and found my way to Rachel.

ww.01.03.jpg
When I began studying with her, she asked what I wanted in life.
"Lots of rainbows," I answered. Rachel merely frowned.

ww.01.07.jpg
"Waterfalls?" I said, less certainly.
"Those are pleasant things to want," she said, "but I only take on students who have a strong desire to help others. If you want to become my student, you need to have a clear idea of which Sims you want to help. You don't really need my assistance to learn herbalism, you know. Just gather the right plants, and you can learn almost everything on your own."

ww.01.06.jpg
Hardly any plants were ripe yet, but I managed to find a few strawberries. More important, I figured out what type of Sims I wanted to assist.

"Strawberries aid in producing female offspring," Rachel told me. "For males, you'll need carrots. They aren't in season yet, but you can buy the seeds. Have you had any ideas?"

"I want to help Sims who are just beginning a legacy," I said. "And I also want to help those who want to change their nature. Not everyone who is born evil wants to stay that way."

ww.01.04.jpg
"Excellent goals," said Rachel, "and your house in Forgotten Hollow is perfectly situated.

ww.01.12.jpg
"You can place a wishing well on the lot -- I'd advise adding a mirror for clients who need to calm down.

ww.01.11.jpg
"The sprites won't do much, but they're pretty.

ww.01.08.jpg
"And you'll be close to a fishing spot that does have a waterfall. Rainbows you might have to find on your own."

ww.01.13.jpg
Rachel gave me the wherewithal to build a kitchen in which I could craft herbal remedies.

ww.01.14.jpg
I was also able to provide a guest room for adults...

ww.01.15.jpg
...and a place for Sims who had to be regressed to childhood to work on their characters.

ww.01.01.jpg
"Your first legacy family should arrive soon," said Rachel. "And I also know of a very unhappy Sim that you can visit. He might be a little challenging, but it is probably best for you to start with someone difficult, just to see what you can manage."

My first legacy family was THE first family -- the Newbies (more about them later). And my first Sim who wanted to change was Vladislaus Straud IV. Easy peasy, right?

The Newbies 1

ww.bn.01.04.jpg
I was very excited to meet the Newbies, the first Sim family that many people had encountered. They were thrilled with their new residence.

ww.bn.01.01.jpg
"No blue card table," Betty gushed, "and such a pretty setting."
"I'm surprised you decided on Newcrest," I said. "I would have thought you'd want to be in Willow Creek, near the Goths."
Bob made a face, and Betty laughed. "We didn't exactly move in the same social circles as the Goths," she said.
"Bella was all right, but Mortimer..." put in Bob.
Betty frowned at him, and I realized that Bella might not be the most favorable topic of conversation.
"There are many other places to live besides Willow Creek," I said. "Why did you choose Newcrest?"
"It reminds us of home," said Bob.

ww.bn.01.07.jpg
"And we really like being so close to the trolley line," said Betty.
"You still have to go through a loading screen to go anywhere," I reminded them.
"Yeah, but it's free now," said Bob. "Before you had to pay 50 simoleons to take a taxi."

ww.bn.01.05.jpg
"Speaking of money..." I handed Bob a gift of 10,000 simoleons. "An anonymous donor is making this gift possible for all new legacy founders."

Since I had brought up the subject of legacies, I went ahead to acquaint them with the rules:
The Watcher would control only one Sim in the household, but she would pay attention to all the Sims whenever the household had gained 10 points. Points would accumulate as follows:

Their aspirations couldn't be changed until they were completed, and the designated skill had to be maxed before a new designated skill was chosen. Their children had to be given traits according to the day on which their birthday fell, going by the following calendar:

ww.bn.01.06.jpg
"Have you thought about what skills you'd like to work on, and what jobs you'd like to take?" I asked.
"There are so many options," said Betty. "I love music, so I guess I'll become an entertainer, but I don't know which instrument to play. I guess the violin -- I never had a chance to learn that."
Bob and I looked at each other. "Good time to walk the dog," I said.
Bob wanted to become a veterinarian once he had enough money to open a clinic.
I gave them a list of traits that they could pick for their lot. They weren't required to pick anything negative, so they chose Homey, Great Acoustics, and Training Ground.

ww.bn.01.02.jpg
As I left, Betty was beginning to practice the violin.

ww.bn.01.08.jpg
Bob was making friends with Buddy and getting ready to take him for a walk.

ww.bn.01.09.jpg
It wasn't long before the two of them were ready to add to the family.

ww.bn.01.11.jpg
Betty made the unhappy discovery that giving birth was more difficult now, but at least she didn't have to produce a bassinet in addition to the baby.

ww.bn.01.10.jpg
Bob was totally freaked out about the whole process.

ww.bn.01.13.jpg
But he could relax -- Betty had the situation well in hand.

ww.bn.01.12.jpg
They named their little daughter Barbara, Babs for short.

ww.bn.01.03.jpg
I heard her happy gurgles as I walked by their house in Newcrest. It was near the bowling alley, something Bob told me they were very happy about.

Oh man, this brings back memories.  The Newbies are looking good.

I really like your premise for this story (or stories).  What a clever way to write about the lives of multiple sims!  I'm already trying to figure out what the Wisewoman will do with Vlad.

Thanks! I've decided not to wait for witches, but to use the herbalism skill and some other things. Vlad's chapter is coming up soon.

Willow Wisely 2

ww.ww02.01.jpg
"I have this recurring nightmare," Count Vladislaus Straud the Fourth told me. "I am approaching this mansion. It is not quite as large as my mansion, but a respectable size, worthy of my lineage.

ww.ww02.02.jpg
"Inside, I find a beautiful maiden settling down to a sleep of innocent dreams.

ww.ww02.03.jpg
"I awaken her, and she comes downstairs with me, wholly trusting and not the least afraid, friendly even.

ww.ww02.04.jpg
"But there is a momentary trace of fear in her eyes when I place her under my power and she realizes that she cannot escape.

ww.ww02.05.jpg
"I slake my terrible thirst, sinking my teeth into the neck of this beautiful creature.

ww.ww02.06.jpg
"Pulling away, the sight of the wound that I have given this harmless, innocent being fills me with so much shame, so much horror..."

ww.ww02.07.jpg
Vladislaus sobbed uncontrollably for a while. "I can't continue as a vampire," he said. "This has only been a dream, but what if I meet the woman some night when an overpowering thirst is upon me? What if the dream becomes a reality?"
"You might --"
"Don't tell me that I could turn her into a vampire," he said angrily. "Yes, I have the power, but she would hate me forever if I made her a monster like myself. Is it true that you know the cure for vampirism?"
"I don't know the cure, but I know that it exists," I told him, "and I believe it can be found in the pages of one of my books."

ww.ww02.08.jpg
Vladislaus studied in my house for several days, growing more and more frustrated. "I know all this stuff," he told me crossly, why do I have to read it again?"
"To prepare your mind for the cure when you find it," I said. "It's no good just reading the formula; you have to have the power to implement it."
He sighed. "I don't know whether it will do me any good to cure myself. I'll still be an ugly, evil, unlovable old  fellow fit for no one's company but my own, when I want to be my beauty's protector, champion, and knight in shining armor."
"I think I can do something about that," I said. "If you like, I can regress you to childhood. You'll retain your love of music, but you won't be evil and unsocial anymore."

ww.ww02.09.jpg
With this hope, Vladislaus returned to his studies with a renewed vigor.

ww.ww02.10.jpg
One evening he called out to me that he was attempting the cure.

ww.ww02.11.jpg
He swallowed the potion...

ww.ww02.12.jpg
His scream of agony brought me running downstairs. "I'm fine," he gasped. "But now is the time to take me back to childhood before I get too settled in this new form of existence."

ww.ww02.13.jpg
Vladislaus did not change his personality completely. He was still an old-fashioned gentleman. "It's a pity there isn't an aristocratic trait," he told me, "I guess I'll have to settle for being a snob. And I'd like my other trait to be vegetarianism. Meat holds no appeal for me. As for my character, I'd like to develop good manners and emotional control."
"What about responsibility, empathy, and conflict resolution?" I asked.
"Let's not get carried away," he said. "I don't want to develop more empathy; I feel guilty enough as it is. And responsibility is for servants. I don't know about conflict resolution; I'm not used to considering anyone's wishes but my own."

ww.ww02.14.jpg
As he left for school, I realized that Vladislaus might benefit from having a companion nearer his own age. My original plan had been to take in the Sims who needed me one by one, but it might be better to have several at a time.

ww.ww02.15.jpg
Consequently, I added Malcolm Landgraab to the household. He couldn't stop being evil, but at least he didn't have to grow up to be dastardly. As for being a snob -- the girl at school that he had a crush on had told him that his family would never be as old as hers nor their property ever as large. Even if he could persuade the girl to marry him, Malcolm told me, his snobbishness would destroy any chance of happiness. So he moved in and tried to beat Vladislaus at voidcritters.

ww.ww02.16.jpg
My other resident was Katrina Caliente. I had intended to add Nina, but Katrina intercepted me. Her daughters were always becoming dynasty and legacy spouses, she said, but no one wanted her because she was too old. She'd spent her entire life looking for love in all the wrong places, etc., and she wanted a second chance. This time around, she wouldn't be as angry, and she'd become an actress.

ww.ww02.17.jpg
The three of them soon settled in. It worried me that Vladislaus couldn't gain any weight. His stomach still had difficulty processing food. I hoped it was something he'd grow out of, or maybe he was still adjusting from the vampire cure.

ww.ww02.18.jpg
One morning he gave me a big hug when I came downstairs and thanked me for taking him in. That's the kind of moment you live for. You can't expect them to happen, of course, but the joy when they do occur is that much sweeter.

What a cute framing device!

Also, it's interesting to see what you're doing with Vlad and them; I'll be curious to see how it plays out.

Thanks! I do like playing witches, and it occurred to me that rather than wait for Maxis to provide some, I had most of what I needed to make my own.

That's quite an eclectic household!  It's nice to see Katrina get a chance, and Vlad as a child is kind of cute in a Gothic sort of way.

The Calientes 1

ww.kc01.01.jpg
One evening when Katrina asked for my help with homework, I gave her some advice, too. "Homework help is a great way to become friends with someone," I said. "And you do want to become friends before getting romantically involved, don't you?"
"I don't know," said Katrina. "That doesn't seem possible for me. I'm, like, a 'love at first sight' kind of woman."
"And how well has that worked for you?" I asked. Katrina didn't have anything to say. "There are three eligible bachelors living over in Oasis Springs," I told her. "They're all older than you currently are, so it won't be possible for any romance to develop. Go do your homework there, and see what happens."

ww.kc01.02.jpg
The first young man Katrina met was J Huntington III. "I'm not sure I'm the best person to help you," he said. "Math was never my strong point."

ww.kc01.03.jpg
"That's okay," said Katrina. "If my homework is perfect, the teacher will know I had help. I just need to make fewer mistakes than usual."
By the time she finished, she and J were good friends.

ww.kc01.04.jpg
"I think I'm ready to age up," she told me at breakfast.
"Not so fast," I said. "You want to develop some character, don't you?"
"I don't know," said Katrina. "J is really good-looking. If I don't grab him, that cute girl in his house will."
"Developing empathy would help you become a better actress," I said. "And the way to develop empathy is by doing volunteer work."

So Katrina spent Saturday at soup kitchens and nursing homes. Her manners took a hit when she dozed off while an elder was telling her about the days before computers, and her responsibility dropped when she put too much food in the soup at the soup kitchen, but her empathy steadily rose.

ww.kc01.05.jpg
Early Sunday morning, she was ready to become a young adult.

ww.kc01.06.jpg
It didn't take long for her to get J to agree to get married. I was much impressed, especially as J tends to be noncommittal.

ww.kc01.07.jpg
I tucked a Simvarius violin in Katrina's backpack. If I'd realized how expensive land in Del Sol Valley was, I would have made it two. After buying their lot, she and J had enough for a cooler, a tent, and a bathroom, and that was about it.

ww.kc01.18.jpg
I gave them some time to settle in before going for a visit. Katrina had a bunch of photographs to show me.

ww.kc01.15.jpg
"The views around here are amazing," she gushed. "Even on a cloudy night, Del Sol Valley is gorgeous.

ww.kc01.16.jpg
"And here it is at sunset," she continued. "I've been able to pick up some spare cash by selling pictures.

ww.kc01.08.jpg
"Of course, what really sells is if you can get a shot of a celebrity. The tabloids will pay a lot for that."
"Are you sure that's a good idea?" I asked. "Sometimes celebrities don't like being photographed without their permission."

ww.kc01.09.jpg
"I know," said Katrina. "She got back at me by having her picture appear in The National Simquirer with the caption, 'Judith Ward's New Boy-Toy?'

ww.kc01.10.jpg
"But J assured me there wasn't anything in the story and I believe him.

ww.kc01.17.jpg
"There are two pictures that will never appear anywhere," Katrina assured me. "This one of J...

ww.kc01.14.jpg
"...And this one of the three of us."
I almost fell off my chair. "You had a baby?"

ww.kc01.13.jpg
"Yes, and J was in quite a panic about it," she laughed.

ww.kc01.11.jpg
The costume designer at DSV Studio was the first to notice she was pregnant, Katrina told me.

ww.kc01.12.jpg
Luckily she was in a commercial where her looks didn't matter so much.

ww.kc01.19.jpg
And later she was in one where they could pose her behind a ship's wheel. "I wish they wouldn't keep giving me brown hair," said Katrina, "but they say my flaming red hair is too memorable -- they want viewers to remember the product, not me."

ww.kc01.20.jpg
Before I left, Katrina insisted that I meet Hugh. She says I'm his fairy godmother even though I am definitely not a fairy.

The Landgraabs 1

ww.ml01.02.jpg
I cannot say that I am happy about the way Malcolm has turned out. I feel that I have failed him. Perhaps if I had regressed him all the way back to toddlerhood? I had thought that we could keep his snobbishness and get rid of his evil tendencies, but it was not to be.

When he first arrived, he went straight for the doctor toy, and I thought that he might want to develop some empathy. But no -- Malcolm was briefly interested in becoming a doctor because they made lots of money. And he decided against the career because he doesn't like the sight of blood.

ww.ml01.01.jpg
I think what worries me about Malcolm is that when he does do the right thing, it's for the wrong reason. You can understand it when someone does the wrong thing for the right reason -- like Katrina dozing off in the middle of someone's story that she was making an effort to listen to. But I don't think Malcolm developed a responsible character because he wanted to be helpful to people. Once he had the trait, he insisted upon being aged up to teen.

ww.ml01.03.jpg
And then, when he found out that somehow this resulted in his having an F average at school (which I agree with him was most unfair), he wanted to become a young adult. So here he is -- evil, a genius, and ambitious. I very much fear it's a worse combination than what he would have gotten if I'd just left him alone.

ww.ml01.07.jpg
He immediately went over to the Fyres' house and became friends with Morgan.

ww.ml01.06.jpg
The next day, he invited her over so that she could become a young adult, too.

ww.ml01.05.jpg
After that, Malcolm worked quickly, moving from flirtation...

ww.ml01.08.jpg
...to proposal...

ww.ml01.09.jpg
...to wedding.

ww.ml01.16.jpg
And finally, to impending parenthood.

ww.ml01.10.jpg
Also, Malcolm moved his parents into the household. I'd like to think it was because he had missed them while living with me...

ww.ml01.14.jpg
...but I suspect the reason might have been the almost 300,000 simoleons they brought with them. Moira, I know, was a little taken aback to find them in her bedroom.

ww.ml01.15.jpg
Malcolm built a small cottage for them on the property, and I do hope everyone will get along. One good thing is that there will be plenty of people to look after the baby, because I can't imagine Malcolm going out of his way to change diapers.
He plans to go into politics.

ww.ml01.04.jpg
Back at home, Vlad has been moping around because Katrina and Malcolm have moved out, and he's "all alone."

ww.ml01.11.jpg
He's begun dressing up as a bear, and only feeling happy when he's in his bear suit. I think a psychologist would say that he feels vulnerable now that he's not a vampire anymore.

ww.ml01.12.jpg
One good thing is that he's able to eat a whole meal now without getting sick.

ww.ml01.13.jpg
Vlad wants to be aged up as soon as possible, but he does see the wisdom of waiting until he's at least a B student. He doesn't want an F like Malcolm got.

The Curious Brothers 1

ww.cb01.11.jpg
I was walking through Oasis Springs the other evening, wondering if I ought to interfere in anyone else's life considering how disappointed I was in Malcolm, when I noticed that the former Landgraab house appeared to be occupied. "I don't remember there being a telescope on the roof," I said. "I wonder..."

ww.cb01.04.jpg
It had been a long time since I'd seen Pascal Curious. "What are you doing here?" I asked.
"We moved in a few days ago," he told me.
"But why here?"
"We fell in love with this house the moment we saw it -- all those lovely flat roofs. We could each have our own telescope if we wanted."

ww.cb01.09.jpg
I followed him inside and met his adorable little daughter Cosma.

ww.cb01.01.jpg
She lurched towards me with the awkwardness of someone who had just learned how to walk.
"It's amazing that she'll be able to visit Sixam some day," said Pascal. "And who knows? Maybe she'll meet her other parent. That could never have happened before."

ww.cb01.05.jpg
I watched him read her to sleep, and then I had to use the bathroom. "Did Vicund and Lazlo come with you?" I asked.

ww.cb01.06.jpg
Unbeknownst to me, Vidcund came and settled himself in the bathtub.

ww.cb01.07.jpg
I was definitely shocked when I emerged.

ww.cb01.08.jpg
"They're both here," said Pascal. "Lazlo wants to become a master chef, and Vidcund got a job in business.

ww.cb01.03.jpg
"He's already met one of his co-workers, Jade Rosa.

ww.cb01.02.jpg
"These days he wants to be a serial romantic, so he was excited to find that he was already working with one of his future conquests."

ww.cb01.10.jpg
"I'm still a little surprised that you boys would have chosen Oasis Springs," I said. "I thought for sure you'd want to move to Strangerville."
"Well, finding a house with nice flat roofs already was a big factor," said Pascal, "but we also met someone who was just perfect for Strangerville. We didn't want to get in his way, so to speak."
"Really? Who?" I couldn't help asking.
"He made us promise not to tell," said Pascal. I still had lots of questions, but it was getting late. The Curious Brothers here in town -- I couldn't help wondering how Vidcund would fare as a serial romantic, and Lazlo as a chef. I hoped he would remember to wash his hands before cooking.

Someone perfect for Strangerville? Can't wait to see who it is--and see if my hunch is correct.

@reggiko, I have a suspicion that your hunch might be correct. More soon.

The Goths 1

ww.cg01.01.jpg
I met Cassandra Goth one afternoon when she came home from school with Katrina.  "Is it true that you have a well that grants wishes?" she asked me.
"I do have a wishing well," I said. "It grants some wishes, but sometimes not in the way that the person wanted."
"If there's someone I want to marry, can it give me that?"
I shook my head. "If you want a boyfriend, it can provide that, although possibly not in the way you want. You'd be better off relying on your own abilities and personality."
Katrina soon filled me in on the object of Cassandra's affections. "She's got a crush on Don Lothario," she said. "Totally unsuitable, of course, but that might be part of the attraction."

ww.cg01.02.jpg
Not long after Katrina moved out, I got to meet Don. He was walking by the house when I was surveying my broken clothesline, and he helped me fix it. "You help people who have problems, don't you?" he asked. "Big problems, 'what should I do with the rest of my life kind of stuff,' right?"
"Yes," I said. "Do you have a problem?"
"It's this whole noncommittal mindset," he said. "I'm tired of working sometimes as a waiter and sometimes as a street vendor and sometimes subbing for a lab assistant. And I'm even kind of tired of being a boyfriend to many but a husband to no one. I know you helped Katrina work through some of her pre-arranged issues, and I was wondering if you could help me, too."
I reminded him that Katrina had been regressed to adolescence. "I don't know about that," said Don. "Let me get back to you.
He called me back that very evening. "My draft notice arrived in the mail today," he said. "You can't regress me, but could you help me make a few changes?"
"I can try," I said.
"What I really want to find out is what my future career path should be, once I get out of the military," said Don.
"I can arrange for you to have a dream that will give you some guidance," I told him.
"Excellent!" he exclaimed.

ww.cg01.03.jpg
The next morning I was a little surprised to see Cassandra Goth in my kitchen. "I know you've got Don here," she said. "I want you to make me older so I can marry him."
"Slow down," I said. "Do your parents know you're here?"
"I told them I was going to get you to help me lose my gloominess," she said. "I don't want to be a Debby Downer any more. And I also want you to make me beautiful so that Don will fall in love with me."
"I don't do physical transformation," I said, "just psychological. But you're already quite pretty."
"Pretty isn't good enough," said Cassandra. "I want Don to be filled with overwhelming desire when he looks at me."
"No you don't," I said. "He's already experienced overwhelming desire for a great many women. You want to start out by being his friend."

ww.cg01.04.jpg
I told Cassandra that she could stay only if she agreed to follow my advice. "Try asking him for help with your schoolwork," I suggested. "He can't flirt with you because of your age, so you'll both get a chance to know each other better." To tell the truth, I thought it might cure Cassandra of her crush.

ww.cg01.05.jpg
They finished building her electricity project together. Cassandra was disappointed in the result. "It just gave off a few sparks," she said, "kind of like the way we reacted to each other. Basically a fizzle."

That night Don had the "guiding" dream I'd promised him. He told us all about it at breakfast.

ww.cg01.08.jpg
"I was a pirate, I'm ashamed to say," he started, "and my crew captured a beautiful young maiden who was out on the sea on her yacht. When she was brought on board, she fainted dead away from terror.

ww.cg01.07.jpg
"I caught her in my arms as she collapsed and I gave her mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.

ww.cg01.06.jpg
"When she regained consciousness, I introduced myself and asked if there was anything she wanted."

ww.cg01.11.jpg
"'My freedom,' she said icily. Her contempt for me and the other pirates was obvious.

ww.cg01.10.jpg
"Stung, I attempted to placate her. I wasn't really a pirate, I told her, but an undercover agent who had infiltrated the gang. I promised that I would restore her to her people as soon as my mission was over. 'See that you do,' was all she said.
"And that was the end of my dream," said Don.

ww.cg01.09.jpg
"What did the young woman look like?" asked Cassandra.
Was it my imagination, or did Don's cheeks slightly redden? "Her hat had a veil on it," he said. "I couldn't see her face very clearly."
He turned to me. "I guess I'll have to have another dream tonight. I really don't want to be a pirate, and that seems to be the only career that was in my dream."
"Not true," I said. "You told the young woman you were an undercover agent. The military will give you some training for that, and you can make even more progress later."
"Hey, that's right," said Don.
With Don satisfied, I made a birthday cake for Cassandra.
"Do you think Don thought the young woman in his dream was me?" she asked.
"I'm sure of it," I said. "I saw the way he blushed."

ww.cg01.12.jpg
With a new hairstyle and an outfit that didn't shout "schoolgirl," Cassandra was enough to inspire passion in any young man, let alone one as susceptible as Don.

ww.cg01.13.jpg
Don soon proposed to her. I overheard some of his speech: "Cassandra, I've played the field so long that I don't even know where the goalposts are..." I quickly withdrew.

ww.cg01.14.jpg
Cassandra accepted.

ww.cg01.15.jpg
They pledged their vows at the arch in my backyard.

ww.cg01.19.jpg
The two of them bought the Oakenstead lot in Willow Creek and decorated it in red, white, and black.

ww.cg01.16.jpg
Cassandra got a job as a critic, while Don quickly moved from raw recruit to private. Hardly had they settled in...

ww.cg01.17.jpg
...but Don was panicking and Cassandra was having a baby.

ww.cg01.18.jpg
He had good reason to panic: Cassandra gave birth to twins, Cornelia and Claudia.

ww.cg01.20.jpg
Don recently assured me that he's very happy, even if he is living with three women again

Willow Wisely 3

ww.ww03.01.jpg
Despite missing Katrina and Malcolm, Vladislaus was mostly a happy child, especially when he was drawing or playing his violin. Digesting food was still a problem for him, though, and I began filling his pockets with carrots and strawberries, as uncooked fruit and vegetables seemed to be the only thing that didn't make him sick.

ww.ww03.02.jpg
One day he was late coming home from school and showed up very excited. "I found her!" he told me. "I found her and she doesn't hate me!"
It turned out that he'd been invited to the house of one of his schoolfriends, Max Villareal. "I almost turned away when I realized that the gate was the one I had passed through in my dream," Vladislaus told me.

ww.ww03.03.jpg
"Inside, I met Luna, and she was actually quite friendly to me. Unfortunately, she thinks of me as a child. Do you think I could be aged up to teen now?"

ww.ww03.04.jpg
I didn't think he was ready yet, but his pleas were so sincere that I gave in, only to find that he couldn't become a teen in the normal way, by blowing out candles on a cake. Even the cake at the restaurant didn't work. "It's because I used to be a vampire," he told me. I had to use a stronger spell, but he did achieve the same age as Luna.

ww.ww03.10.jpg
With Vladislaus a teen, I could do a little more without worrying about leaving a child alone at home. I visited Johnny Zest to find out if there was anything he wanted. "I'd love to find out who my own true love is," he said. "I'm doing okay financially, but I do wish I had someone in my life. I want somebody to love; I need somebody to love; I would love..." I left with the chords of Jefferson Airplane throbbing in my head.

ww.ww03.11.jpg
Later in the week I visited Travis Scott and Liberty Lee. They were fine, just fine, they assured me. Travis had to leave for work about an hour before Liberty did. As soon as he was gone, Liberty asked me if I could get rid of Summer Holiday. "In a good way, of course," she said. "I don't want anything bad to happen to her, I just want her out of the house. I'm in love with Travis, and I think he might fall in love with me, but it's never going to happen with Summer around. She's got these big blue eyes and that helpless doe-caught-in-the-headlights expression...And both of them would be miserable if they got involved with each other. Summer would always be pouting because Travis would be playing on the computer instead of paying attention to her, and Travis wouldn't have anyone to explain his strategy for The Refuge to, because Summer would get bored."
I told Liberty that I would see what I could do.

ww,ww03.12.jpg
My third stop was in response to a text from Brant and Brent Hecking. "We heard you were lining up legacy founders," Brent (or maybe it was Brant) said. "We just wanted to make sure you had some diversity."
"Like, are any of them ethnic or gay?" asked the other one.
I confessed that so far the best I'd been able to manage was a cured vampire and a Sixamite toddler and said that I would be delighted to include them if they were interested. "Do you plan on adopting or do you want to take your chances with the Sixamites?" I asked.
"Oh, we'll adopt," said Brant (or maybe Brent).  "I'm assuming we'll be able to keep Rosie?"
"Absolutely," I said. "But you will have to move to a bigger lot."
That wasn't a problem for them.
After I left them, I realized that I now had all my legacies ready to go, except for the one in Strangerville. I wished that Pascal would give me the name of the person who was interested in it. I couldn't think of anyone more suitable for Strangerville than the Curious brothers, and it worried me a little.

ww.ww03.05.jpg
When summer arrived, I was able to go back to Granite Falls to collect more herbs.

ww.ww03.06.jpg
Fireleaf was still harvestable, and I was able to take cuttings of a few unidentified plants. I also collected a few bugs and hoped that I would soon be able to make some remedies.

ww.ww03.07.jpg
On my return home, I added fireleaf, chamomile, and noxious elderberry to my garden.

ww.ww03.08.jpg
Vladislaus was practicing the violin. I'd suggested he do that to develop his emotional control. And he could improve his manners by paying more compliments, I added.

ww.ww03.09.jpg
The person he most wanted to compliment was Luna, so he went over to see her. His warm weather outfit unfortunately betrayed the knobbiness of his knees and the sharpness of his elbows, but Luna didn't seem to mind.

ww.ww03.13.jpg
She came back to the house with him and blew out the candles on the cake while I aged up Vladislaus in the only way I could. It turned out that all his work on developing good manners had been for naught as they didn't show up as part of his character. Indeed, I could have spared myself the trouble of regressing him entirely. But he thanked me anyway for trying to give him a proper upbringing and said he would always look upon me as his mother.

ww.ww03.14.jpg
The Romance Festival was going on in San Myshuno, so the two of them took off for that. The love guru, or whatever he was, told them they shouldn't waste any time.

ww.ww03.15.jpg
So Luna and Vladislaus got married, right there, at the Festival. And I do hope they'll live happily ever after.

The Strauds 1

ww.vs01.01.jpg
I didn't see Vladislaus for a while, but one evening I got a phone call from him. "I'd like to see you," he said. "I'll be at the Shrieking Llama, if you have a chance." When I arrived, he was playing the violin.

ww.vs01.02.jpg
"Thanks for arriving so promptly," he said. "I picked this bird-of-paradise flower for you, to add to your garden. I can't stay long, but I wrote you this letter to let you know what was happening in my life." And with that, Vladislaus left. Curious, I opened the letter on the spot.

ww.vs01.03.jpg
Dear Aunt,
As I'm sure you've heard by now, Luna and I had a heat-of-the-moment wedding at the Romance Festival.

ww.vs01.09.jpg
Luna is adorable, beautiful, loving, and affectionate. Although she is not my intellectual equal and is somewhat childlike, I truly feel blessed that she agreed to marry me.

ww.vs01.04.jpg
And I am making friends with the rest of the family. She has two brothers, Hugo and Max. Hugo loves to cook, but Max's favorite activity seems to be trolling the forums.

ww.vs01.05.jpg
Her father Jacques has retired from his criminal activities, which is a relief. He is what is described now as "erratic."

ww.vs01.06.jpg
I would be inclined to use the term "totally bonkers," myself.

ww,vs01.07.jpg
During one particularly electrifying thunderstorm, I noticed him taking a shower in the rain.

ww.vs01.08.jpg
To my horror, when I looked out another window, I saw that my darling Luna was doing the same. I very much fear that she has inherited her father's condition.

ww.vs01.10.jpg
While she doesn't go out in public in her nightwear, Luna is disinclined to take an umbrella with her, even in a heavy and thunderous rainstorm.

ww.vs01.11.jpg
And the day will soon come when we have a little one to take care of. I don't need to tell you, Aunt, that I am very concerned. Your servant, etc., Vladislaus

There was a second page to the letter -- a second letter, I discovered.

ww.vs01.14.jpg
Dear Aunt,
I missed my chance to give you my first letter, so I'm adding this one to it. I've decided against becoming a professional musician, for several reasons. Instead I took a job as a gardener, with an eye to becoming a botanist. I doubt that my digestive system will ever adapt to normal food, so I've decided to grow my own fruits and vegetables. And as long as I'm doing that, I might as well make money from them.

ww.vs01.15.jpg
I'm also raising bees. Bonding with them means that I get a few stings, but I'm sure it will be worth it.

ww.vs01.12.jpg
As you've probably guessed, though, ensuring a steady food supply isn't my only reason for becoming a gardener. With Jacques and Luna both erratic, that means there is no one that could really be trusted to leave with a baby. Hugo and Max are both in school much of the day, and Max, I have to tell you, worries me. He has a laugh much like Malcolm's.

ww.vs01.13.jpg
I'm doing what I can to give him a good upbringing -- tucking him in at night and helping with his homework (he's currently getting D's) -- but he'll never be someone who's good at looking after children. With the garden, I can stay at home as much as I want. And to be honest, I don't really enjoy playing the violin in public. I worry too much that people will be whispering, "Isn't he still a vampire?" "No, they say he's cured, but I don't know." "Once a vampire always a vampire," etc.

ww.vs01.17.jpg
Anyway, children there will be. Luna let out a cry of shock and pain the other night.

ww.vs01.16.jpg
When I arrived on the scene, she had already given birth.

ww.vs01.18.jpg
We have a beautiful little girl, Celeste. Looking at her, I don't regret anything.
With gratitude and love, Vladislaus

The Zests 1

ww.jz01.01.jpg
When Vladislaus left, I invited Johnny Zest to come for a visit, and while he was with me, I arranged a little "blind date" dream for him with Summer Holiday.

ww.jz01.02.jpg
She came over to see me one afternoon. "Ugh," she said to Johnny. "You sound just like this guy who was in my dream last night.

ww.jz01.03.jpg
"He was a terrible guitar player. He thought he was a singing cowboy or something, but he was totally out of tune and looked more like someone from a dude ranch than an actual cowpoke.

ww.jz01.04.jpg
"And then he started hitting on me. Luckily I woke up before it could get any worse."

ww.jz01.05.jpg
"Oh really," said Johnny. "Well, I dreamed I was in this old-time Western saloon, waiting for the barmaid to show up so I could wet my whistle with some sarsparilla.

ww.jz01.06.jpg
"And when she did show up, she had this stream of excuses and kept saying 'Lips that touch wine will never touch mine,' even though I told her it was sarsparilla I wanted, not wine. She looked kind of like you only prettier."

ww.jz01.10.jpg
"I do hope that's not who you're trying to hook me up with," Summer said as she joined me in the kitchen.

ww.jz01.08.jpg
"I heard that," Johnny called over his shoulder. "'Bye."
Summer had to go to work, but she confided that she was moving in with me for a while. "I think Liberty and Travis might get something going together if I'm not around. And yeah, I'm hoping you can work the same kind of magic for me that you did for Katrina and Cassandra. Only I'm looking for someone with a little more swash to his buckle than Johnny if you know what I mean."
To say that I felt like a failure was putting it mildly.

ww.jz01.09.jpg
A couple of hours later, I got a text from Johnny. At Mus in DSV. Just met fantastic woman.

ww.jz01.11.jpg
I should explain that although I don't have electricity (which makes it really hard to get clothes dried), I do have a modern phone. Anyway, a few minutes later another text came through. Name's Candy Bear, Beer? Whatev. She laughs at my jokes. I'm in love.

ww.jz01.12.jpg
A few days later, I got a very long text from Johnny:
Got a house in Del Sol Valley & moved in with Candy...

ww.jz01.14.jpg
Also her sister Yuki. Last name is Behr... Yuki's in high school.

ww.jz01.13.jpg
Candy & I got engaged...

ww.jz01.15.jpg
Married...

ww.jz01.16.jpg
And Candy's pregnant.

ww.jz01.17.jpg
This is our house. Come see us! Thanks for everything.

ww.jz01.18.jpg
Johnny paused before adding a P.S. I do mean thanks. If I hadn't had the nightmare with Summer, I wouldn't have realized how lucky I am with Candy.

ww.jz01.07.jpg
I didn't know how Summer would take the news that Johnny had gotten married to someone else. True, they hadn't seemed to hit it off, but lots of romances start with conflict. "It's no big deal," said Summer. "He wasn't really my type. I'm looking for a guy who's more heroic, if you know what I mean. Someone epic, legendary."
"Oh," I said. I racked my brains, trying to think of someone in Willow Creek, Oasis Springs, Newcrest, or Brindleton Bay who was single and heroic. I couldn't think of anyone even remotely close to epic or legendary.

ww.jz01.19.jpg
"Ding dong," someone called from the front door. "I heard y'all have a little problem down in Strangerville with zombies. No, it was triffids. Something like that."

Ah. I never played TS3.
