Does this look like my files are corrupted? Please help.
« on: March 15, 2011, 11:39:10 PM »
Ok, having some serious problems now.  Houses are somewhat distorted when I place a saved house I built.  As far as I know, I don't have any 3rd party cc, but I have downloaded some patterns.  I can remove all the patterns I have including ones from this forum.  I know we are as careful as we can be but even the best of us could pick something up and infect others unknowingly, and there are some who do use 3rd pty cc and mods but don't always say so up front.  So, here are some screenies of the weirdness I'm experiencing.  Could one of you who are more familiar with this kind of thing tell me if you think it's due to corrupted files and I need to uninstall again, or due to cc?  It's really making things very difficult as it's slowing my game down as well as causing the distortions.

I apologize for the small pictures you must click to enlarge, but the gallery has not been working for me.  The distortions are the off white slabs coming out the sides of the building.

No.  That happens from time to time during the process of building something, then rebuilding it, then re-rebuilding it again (and again and again lol).  I get this a lot.

You can use the hammer tool to delete those funky sections that are sticking out, and it won't have any ill effects on your game.  You might get more later as you continue the build process, but you can remove them again.  Make sure, as you delete the sections, that you rotate the camera a couple of times to make sure you get them all.  Those sections are 2 dimensional (they have width and height, but no thickness), and if your camera is angled in certain ways you might miss a couple of pieces.

I have no idea if there's a way to avoid this, but deleting them isn't really all that big of a deal.

Since this has never happened to me before in any build I've done I really feel there is something wrong that needs fixing.  I just don't know how to fix it or what to fix.  Going around and deleting funky additions is not a cure, though it sure does make for a temporary solution.  Still, it makes me think I should not be adding anything to the swap shop.  I don't want to spread any damage if there is something wrong that could affect others.

This happens to me very occasionally, and deleting those sections have never caused any issues.  One of the houses it happened on was my Dynasty house.  It only happened once, when I was first building it.  That game is still going on, and works just fine.  It also happened a couple of times on my first legacy house, and I deleted them and went on with the game.  The reason I don't have that save anymore has nothing to do with glitches, bugs or file corruption.  The hard drive it was on burned out, and I wasn't maintaining backups on a flash drive like I do now.  But before that hard drive burned out, I played that particular family for 9 generations.

Likewise, I have built probably more than 100 houses since the base game came out, and those are the only times it's happened.  I wouldn't be telling you that you had nothing to worry about if I thought there was even the slightest chance that there was something to worry about.  In my experience, while it's a rare occurrence, this is just something that happens.  The chances are really good that if you delete those sections, it will be a long time before you see something like that again...if you ever do.

Hosfac is right Joria.  I have had that problem before myself and freaked out.  I was talking to my sister and she told me the same thing happened to her and to get rid of it, just use the sledgehammer and it takes care of it.  It may not happen again, I know I didn't have anymore problems with it.  At least try and see if the hammer works.  It should work fine.  I am not sure why that happens, but it is just one of the mysteries to this game, like so many other little mysteries.  Good luck. :)

Well, the hammer certainly does the trick.  It appears it is just this one building that keeps on doing it.  Every time I install that building on a lot, it makes that weirdness and not always in the same spot.  It also lifts windows up so they poke through the next floor up part way.  Not the entire window, just part of it.  It's not that attractive a building.  Just a rectangle that goes up four floors on a 10x15 lot.  Much prettier inside than out.  I'm really thinking of just saying the heck with it and start over with a different style or something.

If you've saved it like that, it would probably be like that any time you plop it down.  Have you tried deleting the old one from your bin, then saving the fixed one?

Likewise, I've had it interfere with placing objects inside and outside the house...although I always found them and got rid of them before trying to put windows in it.

You know, I clicked on this thread, though "that's odd", went into my game and had the exact thing happen. For me, it happened when I placed a sloped lot on an empty flat lot. From your screenshots, it looks like your house is also on a slope. Perhaps the terrain height is responsible?

I have this on my Jade Dynasty Mansion. It's a bit annoying but I am thinking of a rebuild already... :-X I don't know what causes it, it appeared after I put my windows in and so I tried taking the windows out and it didn't fix it. So it's not just lots you place down, I got this from a building from scratch project.  :-\

I don't know what causes it either, but I know that using the sledgehammer gets rid of them.  ;)

Yeah, I am going to scratch my Dynasty House and build a new I think, I will say if this glitch happens after a knock down and rebuild job.

Exactly!  It was fine until the windows went in.  I've fixed it, and then gotten rid of the original one and saved the fixed one but it still does it.  It doesn't seem to matter if I put it on a flat or sloped lot.  It's always the same with the weird slabs and windows going up.  The lower floor doesn't do that.  Only after the second and third floors.  Ah well, Hosfac's hammer idea works fine.  lol

Well we didn't use the same windows and I am unsure as to which floor mine causes the problem, I think it could be the second because I re built the windows downstairs.  :-\

I know I've had it happen on the first floor and second floor both, although I can't say with all certainty that it started appearing when I was placing windows...but that's entirely possible.

So do you think it's a particular window causing the problem?  I personally have never seen this, but my poor sims just get basic boxes to live in, and I know I haven't used most of the windows available in the game.
