A bit off topic but my maid (it's a dude actually :P ) stopped doing the laundry since I've got myself a hamper! I located it near the laundry machine and the dryer. He just washes the dirty dishes and goes home. Even if the hamper is full he doesn't care. When my Sim left the clothes on the floor he did his job. Hampers seem to spoil that slacking idiot.

I think there was something about that Maids only do one part of a multiple action queue, Laundry is 3 Parts on it's own but a Hamper can make it 4. (Put Clothes in Hamper, Wash Clothes, Put Clothes in drier, Put away clean clothes.) I always make my sims do it when they can because otherwise it piles up. Just like my room...  ;D

It seems maids in Sims are pretty limited :/ Good thing they don't cost much so I don't have to worry about those dishes on the table ;)

Edit
I've hired a maid guy (!) and he does everything he is supposed to do. He does the laundry even if it's in the hamper so it seems like my previous Hidden Spring save was buggy.

In that case it could just have been your previous maid was a slacker, the ones the game hints tell you to keep an eye on. Oh and another point was that someone suggested that a Maid will do a better job if you are watching them and that they are more likely to slack if you are say at the park (You not your sims) I can't remember the decision on that though.

Samoth me and my sims are almost always at home in my Immortal dynasty so there is honestly a minimal effect of how "hard" or "not hard" the maids work. All maids hired so far in the dynasty are pretty much permanent slackers, almost nothing seems to get them to do what I hired them for.

I know about the "not being watched" part. In my previous save I had a laptop in my house. If I scrolled somewhere else than my house the maid kept surfing the net instead of doing her job. The one I have now is doing his job well.

Maids are terrible. If you have room, get a butler, because they seem to work more.

It depends on the traits if they work hard or not work at all. Probably the maid described above was a computed whiz, or what that traits is called. You can check that to let a Sim know the person (or add them to your household, check if that and don't save afterwards).

I don't hire maids, or worse, butlers.  I just do it all myself.  ME, not my Sims.  Just pause the game for a few seconds.  You can't make the bed or wash the laundry but you can pick it up and put it in a hamper, clear a table and put the dishes in a dishwasher, and throw out spoiled food in the trash, put away toys and books, etc.  Takes a few seconds for me to do it and saves my Simoleons for my Sims to spend.
What?  Grannies can't play games?

I do the same. I put a hamper in each bedroom and bathroom and the sims do the lauandry.

@KatLuvr, I wonder how many of us were maids and never knew it.   ;)

I agree with Joria, too.  I've found that unmade beds don't seem to have the same effect as dirty objects or trash, so I worry about those the least.  For the stuff I can't do, I make it a point to include a quick sweep of the house in one sim's daily routine for the kitchen and bathrooms.  If anything, though, these are something maids in my game will do.

As far as laundry goes, I've never had a maid start laundry themselves.  Once my sim starts it, however, the maid will take care of the rest as long as s/he's still present when the cycles finish.

I know it's a pain, but if you're attached to having a maid (I know I am in some families), fire the one.  A new one will show up and hopefully be better.  They can't be much worse.  I've done this in the past and after sorting through two or three duds I've always found a decent maid who gets most of the cleaning done most of the time.

Slightly offtopic, but to cover all that: you also could dump in a sim with the neat trait (and perhaps perfectionist too). Such a sim will 9 out of 10 do laundry, washing dished and all that on full auto-mode.

I think maids do the laundry when the moodlet for clean clothes/sheets runs out. I need more observation to confirm that thou.
The guy at my sim's house does the laundry sometimes and some other times (when the hamper is full) he picks up dirty clothes off the ground and drops them again. I don't understand this :/

Sometimes, when there are many piles of clothes or many hampers to empty, the sim will get lost in the middle of the chain and drop the action from their queue.  It's annoying if you've taken your eye off of them and are counting on them to do as they're told.  The silver lining is that whatever laundry they've consolidated remains consolidated in one pile on the floor.   ;)
