Smooth Stones

Has anyone found out what smooth stones are for? My blacksmith is stacking them up. I am wondering if they are worth keeping.

I had to use some in a quest to 'Whet' a blade. I don't think you can do it any other time though. I just put them in the furnace and if I need them later on I have them.

A merchant can sell them for a pretty penny during sea trade.  Other than that and whetstone, no purpose I've found so far.
