Freckles
« on: May 13, 2011, 06:10:26 AM »
Here is the question I've been seeking answer to for months.
Are freckles inheritable? I have read people's experience with them, results vary - some say yes, others no. So, after all, are freckles on a Sim created in CAS inheritable? Will their child(ren) have it?
Thanks for your help.

I'm sure it'd be just like other facial features. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't.

Really? Another question arises then: what are the chances of getting freckles?

I think freckles are a bit like red hair - they can be inherited, but aren't common.  In my Clan Douglas Dynasty, the founder had red hair and freckles.  Only one of the 7 subsequent generations had red hair, and none of them had freckles.  The other thing about freckles is that they really only show up on very fair skin.  On darker skin it would be hard to notice them unless you really zoomed in close.

That is quite interesting. Seven generations and none had freckles? Hm. Maybe they are indeed not inheritable?

I think the real test for heritability for freckles would be to create two parents with freckles and see if their children inherit them.  If the freckles follow a simple model of inheritance and are expressed as the result of a recessive gene, and if nobody else in town has them (like if they weren't programmed to pop up on their own in townies), it's unlikely that the children of a single freckled sim would inherit freckles unless, down the line, they married a distant relative who also carried the freckled gene.  This is all assuming, of course, that the freckles follow that model of inheritance.  It would be easy for them to do so, since there's only two options, freckles and no freckles (for each type of freckles), but we know by now the rest of the genetics certainly do not follow that sort of comprehensible model.    If two freckled sims do not produce freckled children, however, I think it's safe to say they're not heritable.

My dynasty founder and her husband had freckles, the child didn't inherit them, doesn't prove anything in and of itself, but it does point to: freckles are recessive and hard to pass down if you can at all.

I'd love to see a child born with freckles if anyone has a picture ;D

That is, umm, quite disappointing, let me tell you. :-[ So that means I read right the other day: freckles aren't inheritable. I really wanted a child born with freckles, but I guess freckles are just not made for them. Am I wrong? I never create toddlers/children in CAS, so I don't know. Help is appreciated.

I just created two freckled Young Adults with very fair skin and gave them 6 children in Create-a-Sim.  Sadly, I have to report that not a single child had freckles.  How disappointing.

Add freckles to the list.  That is disappointing.  It would have been nice to have such a genetic item . . . geneticized.   ::)

Yes, that is disappointing. I always wondered if it was possible for a child to inherit freckles.

So if freckles can't be inherited, that means that moles/birthmarks are in the same situation, right?

That is disappointing. I have birthmarks and freckles in real life, and I would have liked to see my sims inherit them like I inherited mine.

I give all my sims freckles, since they make sims so pretty/cute. I have never had a single child with freckles. Neither do they inherit beauty marks. It is possible to inherit moles (I have the same moles as my dad), freckles, etc in real life, so why not in Sims?

That is very disappointing. This is where real life beats Sims. :P
