What Happens If You Don't Teach Teens to Drive?
« on: June 07, 2011, 04:02:12 PM »
My current family has three teens, and between school, work, homework, and keeping their motives stable, there's no time to teach them to drive, even on weekends. What'll happen when they age up?

I haven't gotten that far yet. I'm guessing they will know how as a YA.  I can say that a teen will jump on a motercycle and drive like a pro with no lessons.

If they age up to YA they should have no problems driving on their own.

When they learn with a parent, they receive a Driver License reward in the mail which is nice.  It really doesn't take long to teach them and you can do it in 3 parts.  You can also just let them drive with one parent and take care of the rest of the family with the other so no time is really lost.

My one teen learned one weekend morning with his mom while his dad took care of the rest of the family.  Mom was finally able to get out of the house and both mom and the teen received a nice moodlet :).

I think it will be like potty training - even if you don't train the toddler they still know what to do as a child.

My second teen waited forever until he became a YA and now he can drive just fine.  Sure am glad his folks kept grounding him or he might have run away!

Also it doesn't effect whether or not you can choose a trait when they age up - not like the toddlers. For teenagers it is still dependent on their school performance.

The worst that can happen is they have to ride around in a cab until they age up. :P

That is really hard on the dating bit don't you think ;)?  Thank goodness our Simmies can now form a date-group and meet up somewhere.

I bought one of my teens a scooter and they didn't need a license to drive it.  At least they were able to get around town faster than riding a bike.

@ RunAmokSims - not sure if I would have trusted him with a motorcycle though as he was a very rebellious teen.

I didn't potty train one of my kids and she wet herself if I didn't tell her to go to the toilet ;)

I didn't have my parents teach their twin teenage daughters to drive because they just couldn't find the time.  The girls dive off in mum's car every chance they get now they are young adults.  No problems except mum has to catch taxi cabs whenever she goes out.

Mum taught little brother to drive when he became a teen.  I was curious so I followed them.  Hair raising to say the least.  Good thing I made sure they both carried death flowers because there were way too many near misses.

Lol.  Good thing sims can't die from a carcrash, otherwise, all mine would be dead when a car drives right through them when they are on their bike.

That would be embarrassing!

As for the teen driving thing, they DO assume the driving role after they age up to YA. I just tried it with my teen girl and it worked, but I don't know if it's different for rebellious teens or male teens.

My male teen who wasn't taught to drive by his parents, drove fine when he aged up.  He was child number 5, so there just wasn't the time.  I don't know if he can be classified as rebellious but he did have a few mood swings that were annoying because he kept wanting to skip school and boobytrap the shower... is that rebellious or did I miss something?

No offence to all you teens out there; but, that's part of the teenage years (at least it was for many of us when we were teens). Food fights, mood swings, etc.
