I did some experiments on this awhile ago.  Unless it's changed, the genetics at the time of conception are what goes to the new baby.  I had a fat Sim get pregnant while fat and her child was fat.  She lost weight and became skinny and got pregnant again.  That child was skinny.  I've always had that same result.
Granted this was my first time, but I have to agree with Pam. After I got Antonia and my son married and pregnant, I moved them out. Last night I changed household so I could check on them. Here are their triplet girls:

And this surprised me too, before I used the body sculptor on her, I'd say she was at least 350 pounds. She must be working out or something, because she has not gained it back!

Test it again by changing the hair colour will results in a child with the latest colour.
No matter if you will paint it purple with silver layers or bright brown. It turns out that the DNA doesn't have any sim-family history or something like that.

I've done that, too, and the new hair color has never gotten passed down to the the next generation.  It always goes back to the original color of the parent.  Have you gotten a new color to show up in a child, Leto?  How long ago did you test it?

I also have a beef about skin-color! I started a legacy (before Ambitions) where the heir had to be dark green like the founder. I have noticed since I installed Ambitions that if say a dark green or blue marries a white, the kids aren't either dark green/blue or white, they're mixed! My family in Twinbrook are dark green and all the kids are light green or white! I haven't played my legacy since I figured that out! If they can't fix that, my legacy ends with whoever it was on before Ambitions!  >:(

I remember reading that genetics was one of the things "improved" with the release of Ambitions.  Children will more realistically resemble their parents with features, and skin tones will be more of a blend instead of one color or the other.

Awwwww that sucks! So I guess my Adams Legacy is over  :( FYI I don't think it's an improved feature! I like my dark green/blue/red people!

So, with the improved genetics, does that mean that hair colors are also blended for the offspring? I had a brown haired father marry and have kids with a blond. Both kids were red-haired.

I know that if I streak the moms or dads hair, the kids hair will be streaked when they get their hair.  I always thought that was pretty cool.  I saw one of the Grisby's, I see what you mean.

That's a little weird if you compare it to real life since red hair is actually a version of blonde hair, but with a larger amount of reddish pigment. It's not a brown-blonde mixup (brown hair is darker, not redder).

There are still some quirks with hair colors.  I have two reddish-brown haired parents (Hank Goddard and Tamara Donner) who have a black haired baby.

I've noticed that too, and I agree it's a nice feature.

Also, I've had two light blonde women in Sunset Valley, and all their children (5) had the same color as their mothers, though their fathers were Leighton Sekemoto and Marty Keaton -- I made him leave Justine.. I mean, Petra, my sim, did  ;D

I thought it isn't possible to get fat sims pregnant. What does it look like? By the way I have a household of 3 sims, all roommates. All lazy, fat, disgusting, hopeless romantic slobs living in piles of old ice cream cartons. (They were all skinny at first) They all ate like, 30 buckets of ice cream and maxed out the weight bar in CAS. I have to have two maids (TWO, don't know why it ended up like that) clean up after 3 slobs. And they only get 125 bucks! Poor maids. Anyways, I am unable to get the only girl pregnant with one of the boys. The boys always say "Ewww! Giana Hash sure is being creepy!" or the reject the first kiss. Now I'm just wondering if anybody will love her, she has tried to woo 6 men so far and they all think she's creepy.

Nope, all females (YA - A) can get pregnant, but I have never had a fat Sim be preggers.

On the Hair subject, colour can skip generations, Jerry (Gen 5 Heir) has brown hair, but his parents are blonde, his grand-mother was brown haired., His Grand-father black haired. So From Gen 2 the blonde gene has skipped gen 3 and gone to 4, then Gen 3 brown hair has skipped 4 and gone to 5. Complicated or what!

Of course a large Sim can get pregnant.  Why in the world would you think otherwise?  And they look like any other pregnant Sim...  they have a bigger belly and walk leaning backward a little.
