Children playing instruments
« on: September 25, 2011, 05:45:55 PM »
I'm trying to get my child sim to get started on her musical skills - guitar, bass, piano and drums, but she can't seem to interact with any of the instruments when they are placed on the lot.

Is it a feature that children cannot play instruments, or am I experiencing some kind of glitch?

No children can't play any instruments. Teenagers can though.

How come they can have the "virtuoso" trait then?

It's one of those things that doesn't make any sense. Like hydrophobes drowning.

I gave her the virtuoso trait when she aged up, which made me think that she could play instruments and that's why I wandered if it was a glitch or not. Maybe the trait helps her learn more quickly from music skill books? It's kind of annoying that she can't play instruments yet, I had planned out a musical bedroom for her.

The trait does help Sims learn musical instruments more quickly. I remember taking piano lessons when I was 4, so children should be able to play some instruments...would be nice.

As a toddler did you have your Sim play the xylophone? That will give them a boost when she/he starts as a teen...lvl 3. I don't believe there are any musical toddler books, just writing, painting and logic?

That was my reasoning as well, real-life children often start learning instruments at a very young age.

As a Toddler my sim maxed the xylophone, and then when she aged up to child I gave her the virtuoso trait. I was wandering whether or not to teach her with adult skill books (like the ones for gardening, logic, cooking etc), but now I realise there aren't any books like that, I was getting confused with the musical composition books.

I guess the virtuoso trait is a bit useless to her, until she ages up to teen.

Virtuoso is actually available from birth.  As a toddler, a Sim with the Virtuoso trait will learn the xylophone quicker than a normal toddler.  As a teen, if the xylophone was maxed, picking up any instrument will start your Sim at level 3.

I'm pretty sure my last kid who maxed xylophone started guitar at level 3 but drums from scracth (which was annoying as I aimed for him to be a drummer). Was I mistaken? I can't test this now because I don't have any children on my games currently.

When my sim ages up to teen I will let you know, she's already maxed xylophone as a toddler. I'm planning for her to have the One Sim Band LTW.
