Is lagging isolated to a single game file?
« on: November 27, 2011, 01:58:08 PM »
I've never noticed this before, but after playing for a while yesterday, the game started lagging. So I went back to an earlier saved game and played that - and did not experience any lagging. So then I went back and played the first file again, and sure enough it still was lagging like crazy. This got me thinking that maybe lagging is connected to that very game file, does anyone know if that can happen?
I always thought lagging was because of the processor and other things connected to the hardware of the computer, but my computer is way over qualified to meet the requirements for sims 3 and with my little experiment mentioned above it does seem connected to the specific game file and some kind of problem in that file. Does anyone have any experience like or unlike this?

You might want to check if the laging save is a lot larger than the none laging one. Sometimes lag can also be caused by stuck sims somewhere in the town you are in, try reseting all sims and see if it is that is what is causing the lag.

Good to know! Thank you, I will check the file sizes and see if that can give a clue! :)

Update: Just looked at the two files and they are pretty much the same size, so that probably isn't it then..

I have a laggy game file that seems to be the only one.  Another game file I loaded and played had no lag. :P  I'm not sure but used to play a saved game in Riverview that became so laggy I just stopped playing it.  After a few weeks, I tried it again and it was fine.  I'm not really sure what causes this but if I have it, I just leave them alone and maybe it straightens itself out. :-\

In my Dynasty file, I've noticed alot of lag. It's in RiverView and even when the game is not paused, the game clock won't move for 1-2 real time minutes. It's been getting worse the more I play too. I had done the make me know everyone cheat and one of the sims pic is invisible, I'm wondering if that could cause it? I'm thinking about doing resetSim * to see if it helps.

That's not really an option for me, as I can't leave my Dynasty unplayed!!

@Esther I've read somewhere that a lot of gnomes can cause lag. I guess it is when they move around. I don't know if it is true though.

@Esther, if your lags are that long, I'd definitely recommend picking a point where nobody important is doing anything important and using reset sim.  I would have done it long ago!   :o

@makeupinternet, my experience is the same as yours.  I play two families at the moment.  The one in Barnacle Bay lags often.  It's usually just for a few seconds and then it gets started again, which isn't too much of a bother (yet).  That family is actually just a single sim living on a small lot.  Her house isn't even finished yet.  The second family is in Appaloosa Plains.  Despite having four members and being on a much larger lot, it very rarely lags.  I'm sure the game in BB is trying to do something, or fix something or someone, and for some reason problems happen often there, but not in AP.

:'( Not my gnomes!! Well, I guess I could put them in the family inventory and see if it makes a difference. If it does I suppose I'll have to sell them all. The headstones should be fine though since they don't move right? I'll try the gnomes and if there is no change I'll resetSim *. Now that I think about it, all my dynasties have done this, and I would have loads of gnomes on each file so that has to be it. Poor gnomes.  :'( Thanks guys!

Well, I might have a little more clue about what causes lag. Although this won't help my Dynasty haha. I started a new game in SV and played as the Goth's. It would lag horribly and the game just started. After a few in-game days I also got sick of the ghosts breaking stuff, so I reset all of them and put their graves in the family inventory. It stopped the lag!! So I guess gnomes and ghosts make games lag.

I always assumed that the longer I played a family, the more objects in their home, and the larger number of generations and household members just inevitably ended up in a super laggy game file. I thought it was the processors too.

It's good to know there are some things I can try to save my Seven generation Sekemoto family with a huge garden, and a house full of collectibles. I put it up on the sims exchange, because I thought the only way to save them was to back them up on the cloud, and put them in a new save file.

Does the resetSim * cheat reset every sim in the neighborhood and house? Or do you have to reset each sim individually by name?

Wow that's like a soft reboot or the whole town! Cool.
