Showtime Problem
« on: March 17, 2012, 01:24:16 PM »
I installed Showtime last night and so this morning I started playing. After about 20-30 minutes I got the black screen and then I was at the desktop with a message saying that Sims 3 had stopped working. I got the options to close the program or check online for the solution and close the program. I clicked the solution one and it just said it was checking for the solution for a couple of seconds and then it just closed without any other message. I thought it was just my computer being weird (since this has happened with other programs) but I've tried it again multiple times with the same result. Can someone please help me?
If at first you don't succeed, call it version 1.0.

If you go to your Sims 3 folder that's under My Documents (if you have XP) or Documents (if you have Vista or 7), you should see an error log.  Open that and see what it says.

I looked and there was no error log there.

It is xcpt files. It is at the bottom of the sims3 files. One of them will be a text file

I clicked on the xcpt files and 2 I couldn't open and the other 2 had some text and then an assortment of letters and numbers. Should I copy and paste those here?

Hi, Alex51299.

It looks to me like you have a system running Windows Vista with only 1 GB of RAM (memory). From what I can tell looking though the files you posted, it looks like the game is running out of memory. You may need to consider adding more memory to your system. Looking at the back of the Showtime expansion, the minimum memory requirements are 1.5 GB for Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Both files you posted show high memory loads of 97% and 93%.

EDIT: Both errors are memory access violation errors -- a program is trying to access memory already in use or locked by another process. In the first instance, TS3E.EXE was the culprit (the main Sims 3 executable) and the second instance was d3d9.dll, which is a component of DirectX.

If possible try updating your system to at least 2 GB of memory, but I would suggest 4 GB if the computer will handle it. Pretty much any desktop from the past 5 years and any laptop (not netbook) from the past 4 years should be able to handle 4 GB of memory.

If you don't know what type of memory your system needs post the make and model here (ex. Dell Inspiron 510) and I may be able to look it up. :)

Hope this helps.

Flynn

How do I get more memory? K can't afford to get a whole new computer.

Well, most people who've known me on here probably think I've dropped off the face of the Earth, and I don't mean to suddenly jump back on here - I've been lurking for a long time - and I know the exact answer to your problem. It's not necessarily Ram that you need, I've had a crash log analyzer on my desktop for ages once Sims stopped producing very good patches (and I'm certainly no expert at reading the crash logs) but yours under the "Exception Info" says <unknown Module> which means your computer feels like Sims is trying to access important memory and will use it incorrectly (though it won't) so it intends to shut down the program immediately. (Only mine would take seconds within starting the game up for this to happen, I know the solution. This is what's called a DEP crash - Data Execution Prevention. Most people usually recommend you update your "drivers" for the graphics card you have. The graphics card is a glove and your drivers are the hand. You can't make something work with a clumsy hand. You'll have to check out your graphics card website for that... Anyways how you can handle this for now while doing that is follow these instructions (note the names of my things may be different, due to the fact that I'm on Windows 7:
1. Go to your Start Menu and open up the Control Panel (if it's not right there for you, you can type it into the search bar).
2. You'll want to find something similar to System and Security (it should have options like Firewall, Updates, Backup and Restore... etc) and find System, (You may just have a System folder, just go with what sounds closest).
3. Click on Advanced System Settings.
4. A window should open, the top tabs should say something like "Computer Name" "Hardware" "Advanced" "Remote" "System Protection" and you'll want to be under the "Advanced" Tab.
5. Find "Performance - Settings" (this will be in the middle of the Advanced Tab, not towards the bottom or anything you may expect).
6. ANOTHER window will open (Oh the joy of lots of windows), this will have tabs that say "Visual Effects" "Advanced" and "Data Execution Prevention." If you can guess, we want the last one.
7. There should be two options to select from (as in put a check mark for or fill a bubble in for one or the other). You want the one that says "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:"
8. Press "Add" below the box for all the exceptions. (I promise this won't mess up any other part of your computer, you are just telling your computer that Sims will be responsible with your Data).
9. (Here's where it gets a tad gritty) You'll want to go to your Sims files via your C Drive. (Not the one in your Documents!) So C Drive, then Program Files. You'll want to navigate to your Bin file - however I'll work with you all the way there.
10. In your Program Files folder, you'll want to find Electronic Arts. From there, click on "The Sims 3" folder, just the base game should work.
11. Find the "Game" folder and open it, you'll then want to open the "Bin" Folder (yes two steps, but I don't want to take up an entire page with a whole bunch of silly steps).
12. Now scroll all the way down, you'll want to click on "TS3" (it should be TS3.exe). Do NOT click any other one. (I don't think anything dramatic will happen, but I don't think any other one will work necessarily. I haven't tried, but I know this one is the main launcher).
13. Once you've selected that, hit open.
14. Now hit "apply" and "ok" at the bottom.
15. Enjoy your Sims. :)

Sorry if this was long, and I hope it works, if you have other troubles I can send you a link via PM as to not disturb forum rules. Good luck, and if you need any clarification I can boot up my old Desktop (Vista) and do my best to give you some answers. :)

You shouldn't need to buy a new computer unless you have a very old system. Computer memory isn't too expensive these days, depending on the system you have. Desktop memory is cheaper than laptop memory on average.

I generally buy memory from one of two places, depending on price and what's in stock. NewEgg.com and Geeks.com. Both have good pricing and service. Geeks is usually cheaper than NewEgg, but NewEgg has a better selection.

Can you tell me what type of system you have? I'll check to see how much memory it can handle and what type of memory it needs. Thanks. :)

@LivvieLove - Good suggestion on the DEP. I'm not entirely sure it will work for this problem as Alex is running a 1/2 GB under the minimum requirements for the game. But it can help alleviate some of the crash symptoms.

@Alex - try LivvieLove's suggestion and see if the game continues to crash. If not, you may want to consider more RAM in the future, but it should be playable (albeit a little slow) for now. :)

I have a M1530 Dell Laptop. Oh and I followed Livvie's instructions, but the game still crashed. But this time it crashed about 3 seconds after the game finished loaded.  :(

I'm sorry to hear the DEP setting didn't help. :(

Good news is, your laptop will take 4 GB of memory. The memory is called DDR2 667 MHz (PC2-5300) 200-pin RAM and runs between $25 and $30 for a 2 GB chip. I found this chip on NewEgg.com for $27.99 per chip with 99 cent shipping. Crucial RAM is a little more expensive, but has a very good reputation.

Laptop memory for the most part is pretty easy to replace, but if you are not sure what you're doing, taking it to a local repair shop with the memory in hand shouldn't cost very much. Or, take it to your favorite geek and offer him/her a coffee or such for their efforts.

In the meantime, reversing the DEP setting should get you back in the game for a little while longer. :)

Hope this helps.
