A LANGERAK EXPERIMENT IN HARMONY

Prologue

My name is Griselda Langerak. I’m a genius and a daredevil, a heavy sleeper with a good sense of humor. I don’t like taking my clothes off, probably because I’m originally from Moonlight Falls, where it’s always cold and damp. My lifetime wish is to be a Renaissance Sim, my favorite color is green, and I love veggie burgers.

You may have heard of my mother, Quatra Langerak. She’s somewhat famous for inventing the time machine.

Also, she’s kind of notorious for failing a dynasty attempt. Anyway, as soon as that happened, she got married to her high school sweetheart, Joshua Gilbert.

They moved from Lucky Palms to Moonlight Falls, so my dad could study magic.

He’s a witch, and I inherited my witchiness and green eyes from him, the rest of my features from my mother.

Here’s my one and only baby picture.

The rest of my childhood is a blur. My parents were both elderly, and they died soon after I was born. I spent my formative years in an orphanage – not a nice one, like the one Mr. Payne was involved with, but a rather bleak place. When I left, the administrator handed me a letter.

My darling daughter,

How I wish I could have been there while you were growing up! Alas, the damp winds of Moonlight Falls didn’t agree with me at all. They say I’m not likely to recover from my latest bout of pneumonia. I hope I prove them wrong, but if I don’t, I’m writing you this letter.

My one regret is that I wasn’t able to continue the dynasty I was in. Had I succeeded, you would have had a place in the universe and some goals to achieve. You would have been, in a small way, famous.

Unfortunately, you won’t be eligible to start the kind of dynasty that I was in, but there are two others you can choose from – the Immortal Dynasty, and the Life States Dynasty. The choice is up to you, of course (and you may not even want to found a dynasty), but I would recommend the latter. While your father and I were living in Moonlight Falls, we observed that there was a good deal of friction between the different life states. I’m hoping that you and your family can demonstrate that different types of people can live together in harmony – even vampires and werewolves.

It’s not easy founding a dynasty. You have to start with a small house on a big lot; you have a lot of requirements to fulfill (1 non-normal friend, 2 career rewards, 3 unique opportunities, 4 lifetime rewards, 5 big wishes, 6 skill challenges, 7 objects you’ve made, and a partridge in a pear tree – joking). But I know if anyone can do it, you can. I don’t have much advice to offer, but I suggest you start in Twinbrook, where the schools are better. The climate’s a little warmer, too.

With all the love in the universe, Mom

So here I am. The small house has been built.

And now I’m about to apply for a job as a private investigator. Wish me luck!

Chapter One – Third Eye Private Eye

Someone tried to burgle my house the very first night I was in it. I don’t think that was very friendly. Luckily I woke up in time (someone must have been watching over me), and called the police.

After a brief altercation, the burglar was taken off to jail. Maybe Twinbrook is a friendly place, after all.

I live on the outskirts of town, and my nearest neighbor is Juan Darer. Since my job requires me to go all over town, I’m glad I have a broomstick to travel on.

My very first client was Anna-Liza Riddle. She was upset about something someone said about her on the Internet.

My most recent client is DeAndre Wolff. He wants me to find a ring he lost. Unfortunately, he went to work before I could dust his house for fingerprints. But I happen to have a picklock that the burglar dropped the night he “visited” my house.

There aren’t many different life-states in Twinbrook. I’ve met quite a few people because of my job, and so far I’ve encountered only one vampire – Lincoln Baker. However, I did meet someone interesting – Goodwin Goode.

My great-great-great-grandmother was a Goode, so that makes us distant cousins – distant enough for romance, I hope.

Goodwin is just an ordinary human, but that’s different from me, so I went ahead and proposed. There’s no telling what he might be by the time we get married. He’s a hopeless romantic, a great kisser, and family-oriented, so we should be happy together. Nevertheless, I want to wait until I’m sure that I want to be married before we actually tie the knot.

Chapter Two – Upset!

Well, so much for harmony. I am so mad I can’t even think of what to say. Or rather, the only words I can think of are ones that I can’t use. But I should back up and start at the beginning.

A few days ago, one of Twinbrook’s eligible bachelors, Wei Keane, invited me to a party. While I was talking to him, I suddenly realized how much I wanted to marry Goodwin.

I went home immediately and invited Goodwin over. We got married by the mailbox, just the two of us, in a private, happy ceremony (sniff!)

The next day, Goodwin went off to fulfill his lifelong dream to become a firefighter. He said his co-workers are a little strange. Justin Kayes is a werewolf.

Shyla Curtis, who used to be a paparazzi, is a zombie.

With co-workers like that, said Goodwin, he’s just as soon go fight fires. But other than that, he was very happy with his job and very happy to be married to me.

That night, I played chess with his former roommate, Sinbad Rotter, who hinted that Goodwin wasn’t quite as good as he made out to be. “Ask him about the girl who sent you a wedding gift,” he suggested.

That morning I looked in the mailbox, and sure enough, there was a “congratulations on your wedding” card from a Jenni Something. I asked Goodwin who she was, and he said, and I quote, “Um…well, er…um.”

It turns out he has TWO DAUGHTERS with this woman. I actually met them because they were all AT THIS HOUSE that I went to in the course of MY JOB. (Sorry about all that shouting. I’m fine now, really.)

To say that I was upset is putting it mildly. I asked Goodwin why on earth he hadn’t married her. He said she hadn’t wanted to get married because her parents were divorced, and she didn’t want to spoil the relationship by getting married. And then he met me, and I proposed, and he was just so overwhelmed that he accepted.

So now I don’t know what to do. If I divorce him right now, I fail this dynasty.  I have to wait a while because I’m nowhere near ready to have an heir. Anyway, this all explains why I didn’t throw him out on his ear. (Plus, he is a great kisser.)

And he keeps saying, “Anything I can do to make it up to you, sweetie, just say the word.”

He may have wanted to phrased that a little differently!  :P

Though I am curious, why would divorcing Goodwin fail the dynasty?

My impression is that then he would be just a helper rather than a spouse. Or maybe that's Griselda's impression. Anyway, he'll stay until she fires up a wish for divorce (can't remember how many LTHP that is).
