These instructions are strictly for using Photobucket, a free Internet image hosting service.  Other image hosting services are probably very similar in the way they work.

  • Capture the screenshot in-game using the camera button (or the "C" key).
  • The screenshots will be on your computer under:
    • C:\Users\*Your User Name*\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Screenshots in Windows Vista
    • C:\Documents and Settings\*Your User Name*\My Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Screenshots in Windows XP
    • C:\Users\*Your Name*\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Screenshots in Windows 7
    • Users > *Your User Name* > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Screenshots (for Mac OS X)
  • Go to http://photobucket.com and create an account if you don't already have one.
  • To upload the screenshot, hit the upload button at the top of the page.  Make sure to double check the location the files are being uploaded to.  Photobucket always defaults back to your Library instead of the last album used.

  • Click on the newly uploaded image when it is done to view it.

  • Click on the box labeled IMG code to automatically copy the photo URL.  This code will include everything you need to post a picture on the forums including the image tags.

  • Now...  go to the forum post and put the cursor where you want your image to show up.  Paste the code in that spot. (Control + V)
  • Click Preview to make sure everything looks good, then click Post.
  • Done!!

Alternative ways to get links (useful for loading multiple images):
  • Before you upload, turn on Easy Linking mode by using Photobucket's instructions here.
  • Now click on the upload button at the top of the screen to upload your screenshots.
  • Once you have uploaded the images - click the "View Library/Album Name* button.
  • When viewing your library you should see a list of links under each picture.   Click on the box next to IMG code and hit Ctrl+A then copy the link (Ctrl+C).

  • Paste the image codes into the forum post where you wanted pictures. Preview for problems and Post when ready.
Due to the recent upgrade to photobucket, at the time of this writing, the ability to auto copy with a single click is not available for easy links.   They've said that it is a work in progress and hopefully will be available in the future.

Resizing your photos using Photobucket
There are hree ways to resize your photos with Photobucket.  One way is to set it up so every photo uploaded is made into the same size. The second way is so that you change it per upload session. The last way is to manually change just the ones you want changed.

  • First Way: Go into your User Settings by clicking on your name at the top and selecting it from the drop down menu.
  • Choose the Albums tab under settings.
  • Click on the link under "Upload Options".
  • Choose the 800 x 600 for forum standard. Now all uploaded pictures will be auto resized to 800 x 600.
  • Second Way: Go to the upload page right before you upload pictures to use.
  • Choose the 800 x 600 option for forum pictures.
  • Upload like you always do.   Then when you go to upload something for home, school or eBay - you can change it back to another setting that suits you best.

  • Third Way: Click on the photo you wish to resize from your Library/Album page.
  • Choose the Edit button above the photo.

  • Choose the resize button at the top above your picture.

  • Forum standard size is 800 x 600 so that's what all of your pictures should be when posted. If using these exact dimensions warps the picture, just try to get the width of 800 and let the editing tool choose the correct height.
  • Make any other edits you need to make and then hit the save button.   This will automatically return you back to the image's page where the links are available to right.
  • Follow the instructions further above for posting the image into a forum post.

As always, let us know if you have questions or problems!

Are there any size restrictions?

We ask that you resize your images to 640 x 480, which is the best size to use in a forum such as this.  You can do this within the image tool link that's on every post you make.

And welcome!

I've never tried following this guide actually. Here's what I do:

After uploading the image to Photobucket, first resize to Large(640x480) if it's too big.
Then simply copy the "IMG code" and paste that to your post; no need to use the Insert Image button.

Done.

Here's your picture:

Skip the whole "Post to website" business, I don't know what that's all about. Start all over in Photobucket.

Just click on your pic in photobucket; I opened it by clicking on the first link in your post. To the left is says "Share this image". Copy the code called "IMG Code" and just paste that in your post.

The image tags are required as part of the code for the picture to show up.

There are technically two ways to post images to the forum.  One us using Photobucket and pasting the image code.  The other is to use the "Add image to post" link located below all the smilies when you're typing your post.  This second one was really great until it started automatically putting thumbnails instead of full size images.  I've gone back to using Photobucket myself.

I think I'm going to go the Photobucket route myself. Those tiny photos from "Add Image..." stink.

If the first listing for the chain of where to find screenshots in the top post is supposed to be Mac OS X, then the name should be changed as well as removing the C:

I'd do it, but I want to make sure that's the case.

This one where it says Windows Vista?

  • C:\Users\*Your User Name*\Documents\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Screenshots in Windows Vista

No that's for Windows Vista, heh. And I can confirm it's the same for Windows 7.

Maybe just add the one for Mac, Metro? Or PM it to Pam.

It's pretty much the same path for OS X but there's no C:

Users > *Your User Name* > Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 3 > Screenshots (for Mac OS X)

I'll make the edit.

Testing from Photobucket ... original source Mac O X.  I resized before uploading to Photobucket, and then copy/paste the Img code.

Did you move the picture to a different folder in Photobucket?  It has to always stay in the same place for it to show up on the forum, or you have to change the image link after you move the picture.

I just put the one pic in there to see if it would work, when I hit the preview, it was in there.  Will try again, I am not real familiar with photobucket, if it doesn't work, will just keep using the dumb little thumbnail, lol.  Will try again and post it to see if I can fix it.

Ok, trying again. Made new album, saved it, named it and see if it works.  Let me know.

Wow, on my end a little big, will resize if this is working.

I do the bulk download to do all of my pics and just below where they download to, find where it says max image size and right next to it click on "more options" and a small box will come up and you choose what size you want your pics and then click save and it will size all of your pictures without doing them one at a time.  I just found this out a couple of weeks ago and sure saves alot of time when you have 20 pictures to size.  Hope this helps.  Only thing is, everytime you upload, you have to change it again, which is no problem, that only takes a second.  Good luck. ;D

Photobucket now have an easier method that now stays the same each time!

When you go to the photobucket website you will see a green button with Upload on it, click that to get to the screen below:

Before you click Select photos and videos first choose Customize your upload options to get this screen:

Now select the picture size of the forum which is 640x480 or lower and press save. You can now upload your photos/videos and it will be automatically saved, the best thing is though that photobucket seems to have remembered that I set it to 640x480 and I haven't needed to change it since I tried it so now all my pictures and being uploaded and re-sized to 640x380!

Hope this helps some of the story tellers who use photobucket!

I didn't know where to put this so I just added it to the existing thread on posting images to the forum.

Will this be affected by the in-game screen resolution? i.e: Will the pictures come out fuzzy or anything? I once had that happen, but I think I was on the lowest resolution. I now play on the second highest. (I dislike the very highest, it came out fuzzy on the gallery when I tried to upload screenshots)

It all depends.  I have a 23.9" monitor that can do a 1920x1080 resolution so when I upload to photobucket it auto sizes them proportionately to 800x450.   The gallery did the same thing where it will try to keep the proportions of the photo while still doing the size you want.

I've never had the gallery or photobucket make any of my photos fuzzy though when it came to resizing unless I resized them myself incorrectly.

Did you press "C" or click the camera icon while in the game?  Are you sure you went to the right place to find the images?  It's located at C:/Documents/Electronic Arts/The Sims 3/Screenshots.

Yes, I used the C button. It didn't show up on the files, but it showed up on the launcher.

It's a little bigger than we like but there are instructions on page 2 from Thomas on what to do when using Photobucket.

That post was from like 2010, so its updated and its not like that. http://s1357.beta.photobucket.com/
Thats the new photobucket and its different. If you want to resize it, you have to edit the picture, click on adjustment, click on resize and then put it to ?????? width and height.  :'(

The instructions have now been updated for the new photobucket.  Please let me know if there are any problems you can see with the instructions.

Easy resizing that was formerly done when you uploaded images is a thing of the past unfortunately as legitpicklegirl10 pointed out.

There has been another update to the work in progress that is Photobucket.  You can now have the website auto-resize all uploaded photos.  To get this option is now included in the instructions in the first post.

I'm sorry but what size do I need to put it to? 640x480? There's been many different posts saying different heights and lengths.

800 x 600 is what the swap shop rules and story rules both say.

@Tandreal:

You need to make a separate topic for that. It's of topic for this thread.

A better way to test what you've got is to use the Preview button (next to the Post button).  It will show you exactly what your post will look like and you won't have to make actual posts to test it.  :)

Also, make sure you're getting the image tags, either by copying them from Photobucket or by using the Insert Image button here.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I've uploaded my pictures, resized them, but I can't click on the IMG thing to copy it. It's grayed out.

Can you get the plain image url? Then you can type out the [img] tags yourself and put the url where it should be.

I'll try that. I thought copying would be easier, less chance of an error on my part.

Okay, I went back in and reclicked and resaved some settings and it's working now. So much better than trying to type all that.

@mpart, I think you chose the HTML option instead of the IMG (the bottom one). If you copy that and paste it into your post, the picture should show up.
