Help with which computer to buy - chance of a black friday deal?
« on: November 16, 2018, 04:37:02 AM »
Hi All,

I am looking to get a good PC that I can easily run Sims 4 and 3 as well as other PC Games like Championship Manager and Rome Total War (my hubby's choices...).  I would also want it to have Office software for the kids homework etc.

I am in the UK and I don't have a particular budget in mind (as I aim not sure how much they cost these days)- willing to push it if you think it is needed.  I was thinking up to around £1500.

I would like something that is a little future proof - so not the bare minimum in specification.

Is anyone able to help?

Thanks

T

HI there!

I'm not sure the prices in the UK personally but there are pretty decent computers that stores are starting to sell to cater to the gaming market. I'm not sure if you happen to have a Best Buy...? They are on the higher end of the price market most of the time however they have started to sell completed gaming PC's at a pretty decent price. Websites like Newegg.com are a good place to start for research purposes because they have a lot of specs and customer reviews on products so you can cross reference that with places they are sold in store or online to get the best price and value for your money. That's what I did. I looked at the items I wanted and cross checked and also waited for sales or open box discounts.

There is also a website that lists the order in which you should purchase items for the best value, I will find it in my bookmarks and edit my post. :)

I'm not familiar with the different stores they have in the UK, so I searched on Amazon.co.uk and wasn't able to find much. But here's what I was able to find:

PC Specialist Omega Impact II Gaming Desktop (Black)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Specialist-Omega-Impact-Gaming-Desktop/dp/B01M32CX5O
Price: £839.78

- Intel Core i5-6500
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Graphics
- 8 GB RAM
- 2 TB HDD

============

PC Specialist Omega Impact IV Gaming Desktop - (Black)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074H65M3F
Price: £778.72

- Intel Core i5-7500
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Graphics
- 8 GB DDR4 RAM
- 1 TB HDD

============

Vibox Sniper 10XW Gaming PC
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vibox-Sniper-10XW-Gaming-Warthunder/dp/B00JLMU2JW
Price: £999.99

- Intel i7 Quad Core Processor
- Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 Graphics Card
- 16GB RAM
- 120GB Solid State Drive and 2TB Hard Drive

I'm not sure what I'd go for out of these 3. Meaning which is best computer for the money.

All in all I'd go with the first one, as it's got a good video card, good amount of hard drive space and system memory.

The last one (Vibox) is kinda too costly in my option, as it only has a GTX970 graphics card. However, if you like this one best you can always upgrade the video card later.

That's what we usually do. Pick the best one, and then upgrade parts later if/when needed.

You may be able to find something of similar specs in your local electronic store.

Wow. With £1500 you'll be fine!

Personally I'd go for the Ryzen 7 2700X with Vega 56. The GPU isn't too bad, it's about the same as a GTX 1070 (slightly better, but not better than the 1070Ti) and the Ryzen 7 2700X is the CPU I'm using which runs Sims 3 and Sims 4 great, plus the fact it's 8 core/16 thread is FANTASTIC for games with a lot of AI calculations to do (like Rome: Total War).

Hope that helps. :)

If I were to be picking between these three I'd be looking at the best video card. The best video card in this bunch is the GTX1080. Overkill for Sims. However for other games and for future proofing it's good.

It may be a good idea to consider getting a bigger SSD and hard drive. As 240 SSD and 1 TB hard drive can fill up pretty fast. These can be purchased separately and added later.

I'm not finding much on actual monitors via amazon.co.uk

Acer R271bmid 27 Inch FHD Monitor, Black (IPS Panel, 4 ms, ZeroFrame, HDMI, DVI) = Deal Price:    £124.99
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01BSIL4W0

You might need an HDMI cable to help hook it to the computer.

There are bigger sizes if you prefer.
