Origin Gifting?

Does anyone know if it is possible to gift via Origin across the regions (EU, US, AU)?

It is my understanding you can't buy games for friends outside of your country or region.

It is suggested to purchase the game from a trusted online retailer and gift them the game code that way, if possible.
