BEFORE THEY WERE (IN)FAMOUS

1. The Class of '00

If you could go back in time and start over, would you? Even if it meant going to high school again? Or especially if it meant going to high school again?

Six Sims were offered the opportunity, along with a large glass of water from the River Lethe. Here they are in front of their new house in Evergreen Harbor: Bella Bachelor, Bob Pancakes, Nancy Landgraab, Geoffrey Osteer, Eliza Hastings, and Mortimer Goth. They don't have jobs or children any more. They don't have spouses. They are free to repeat their past mistakes decisions or to go ahead and take that road not taken. At the moment they have no skills or responsibilities -- just aspirations. Geoffrey, Eliza, and Mortimer all are Goal-oriented. Bella wants to be an Admired Icon. Bob wants to Live Fast, and Nancy plans to become a Drama Llama.

But they can't escape being Sims, which means that they do things like assembling for conversation in the bathroom.

And setting themselves on fire when they try to make lunch. Bella wasn't the only one to go up in flames; Geoffrey did it just before her. As a result, Nancy and Eliza are now afraid of fire. The only way to get rid of that fear is to extinguish some flames, but the other household members are sticking to salads for the time being.

That night Bob pulled his first prank - breaking the toilet in the upstairs bathroom. He has to do two more and get sent to detention, which means getting caught.

At school the next day, the Class of '00 dominated the room. It's the Watcher's fault. She meant to send only two, but the two she chose ended up being the two to go to the rabbithole. It's early spring in Copperdale, which is why everyone is wearing their winter coats.

Mortimer started the day in the middle of a growth spurt -- a hair growth spurt. He hoped no one would notice, but of course someone did, calling out "Hey, Snidely Whiplash!" And someone else suggested, "Put two wheels on it, and you could have a bicycle." Teenagers could be so cruel.

By the time he finished lunch, there wasn't enough time to shave, even assuming he could figure out which bathroom was for boys (key -- green stalls are girls' restrooms, red boys', and gray mixed).

Bob's mustache needed trimming, too, but no one gave him a hard time about it. No one even noticed.

By the end of the first day, everyone had signed up for an after-school activity. Bella was in Drama Club, Bob in Scouts, Eliza in Chess Club, Geoffrey on the Football team, Mortimer in Computer Club, and Nancy was a cheerleader.

At school the next day Darling Walsh was late to class so they ("don't you dare call me she") plopped down on the floor when they came in. It was the most exciting thing that happened in class that day.

By the middle of the week, the three girls all had crushes. Bella had a thing for Wolfgang Munch at school. Nancy's crush was on Bob.

Eliza had a crush on Mortimer, which made her sad, because he was sad so much of the time. One good thing about pillow fights and chess games was that you didn't have to actually talk to your idol.

Final exams were scary. Bella sat at the back of the room so no one would notice if she started crying. Ms. Coombs made Bob sit at the front where she could keep her eye on him. Sofia Bjergson gave up on her exam in the middle, and Greta Laurent just stopped writing. But Bella did well, and Bob aced his.

The next event was even more scary -- prom. "Nancy asked me, and I said yes," said Bob. "I told her it was good that she asked because I would never have dared ask her. And she said, 'You're humble. I like that in a man.'"
"Then Bella asked Wolfgang Munch in the cafeteria, and he turned her down in front of everyone," said Eliza. "But when Geoffrey heard about it, he asked her, so they're going." Eliza looked at Mortimer. "So how about it? Would you like to go to prom with me?" "Er, no," said Mortimer.

Karma? When Mortimer tried to make breakfast the next morning, the stove caught fire. Nancy was on it. The only way she could get rid of her fear of fire was by extinguishing one, and this was the perfect opportunity. Plus, she saved Mortimer's life.

"Too bad you weren't there," Nancy said to Eliza later. "Maybe he would have been so grateful, he'd have asked you to the prom."
"Nancy!" Bella scolded. "But really, Eliza, you might ask him again. Maybe having a near-death experience will make him see things differently."
"No way," said Eliza.

So Bella had a talk with Mortimer. "Go on, ask her," she said. "I know how she feels. It really hurts when someone you have a crush on turns you down."
"Yeah, but it's really awkward spending time with someone who has a crush on you when you don't reciprocate," said Mortimer. "And besides, I'm a terrible dancer."
"You could ask to go as friends," said Bella.

So Mortimer asked Eliza. "Good!" said Bella. "We'll all have fun together."

One might think that Nancy would be the happiest person at the prom since her crush had agreed to go with her, but she got cross because he started checking his phone instead of talking to her.

She got up and went to talk to other people -- and show off her dress.

Bella looked around for Wolfgang Munch and didn't see him. So he'd been lying when he said he was already going with someone else, the rat.

Eliza knew that she looked pretty good in her dress. She looked across the room, and there he was, her new crush, Rohan Elderberry.

At the end of the night, Bella was named Prom Queen (no surprise, since her housemates had all voted for her). But no one would admit to having voted for Nancy as Prom Jester.

Coming home, Geoffrey and Eliza climbed up the trellis. They didn't need to sneak into the house, but it was more fun than using the front door.

Thanks! I don't usually play these Sims because usually they're all grown-up. I did do a challenge based on Bob and Eliza a couple of years ago, and I gave the Goths a haunted house right after we got Paranormal. They're all more fun as teens, though.

2. Sunday and Beyond

Sunday after prom was for doing homework (Geoffrey) and practicing dance moves (Mortimer).

Homework could be frustrating sometimes, especially when your housemate wouldn't let you copy hers. Given Geoffrey's temper, Eliza decided that her depiction of anger should be sold as soon as she finished it, rather than sitting around the house putting people in a bad mood.

Sunday was for trying something different, like playing chess if you were a football player, or practicing cheerleading if you were Bob.

Unfortunately, Sunday was also for attempted cooking. "That's it," said the fire chief. "Don't replace your stove until you're all level 3 cooks." And since replacing the stove was eating into their finances, the household agreed. "Salad is better for us anyway," said Nancy, and Bella and Eliza agreed. Bob learned how to make steak tartare.

At school that week, the only exciting thing was Career Day, and that wasn't very exciting. The posters on the wall in the auditorium gave Nancy something to critique ("Tacky, tacky, tacky"). Mortimer decided against becoming a chef or a mobster (yes, Jacques Villareal was there to tout the criminal career, complete in his fedora). Becoming a conservationist sounded worthwhile, but overly strenuous.

Bella decided to throw caution to the winds and make a promposal sign to show Wolfgang. If she asked him on Wednesday, surely he wouldn't have made any plans yet. But at the last minute she chickened out.

Wonder Day arrived on Thursday, and everyone got a break from school. They still had to go to the Wonder Day service, however. Mortimer and Eliza were the first to leave the house.

Bob, Nancy, Geoffrey, and Bella soon followed.

That afternoon Bella sent Wolfgang a happy text, and he suggested meeting at Hare Park. They played a game of chess together which Bella lost.

Wolfgang was on the verge of leaving, but Bella whipped out her sign. "Yes! he said yes!" she reported back to her housemates.

Friday was exam day, and Geoffrey and Eliza almost missed their final because someone had pranked the whiteboard. Ms. Coombs cleaned it off, but they were the only two people in their class to show up. Geoffrey did well, but Eliza aced her test despite all the stress she'd been feeling.

And finally it was time for prom. Mortimer had a crush on Sofia Bjergson. She agreed to go with him, but she did not have a crush on him, and got quite cross when he got overly romantic in the photo booth. "My hand slipped," he tried to explain, but after their first dance, things went downhill.

Bella was thrilled that Wolfgang actually showed up.

She was determined to kiss him, having brought along a piece of mistletoe for that purpose. Wolfgang was surprised, but not displeased.

When the winners of Prom Queen and Prom Jester were announced, no one was shocked that Bella had won for the second time.

Everyone congratulated Bella and Hugo Villareal, but Wolfgang was busy with his phone when she came off the stage. Mortimer stepped in with "May I have this dance, your highness?" After all, what were friends for? "You do know that he's mean and gloomy," Mortimer reminded her. "I know," said Bella, "but I keep thinking that maybe I can cheer him up a little."
Mortimer couldn't help remembering a line from Lochinvar. A laggard in love and a dastard in war, described Wolfgang perfectly in his opinion. He just hoped Bella would get over her crush soon.

3. Up Close and Personal

It's late spring in Evergreen Harbor, and the town is beginning to look quite pretty, now that a couple of initiatives have been passed. It's also time to go into a little more detail about these Sims. You might think you know them, but do you know everything about them?

Bella Bachelor is a good kid and romantic. Not surprisingly, she likes romantic music but dislikes S-pop. Her favorite colors are red and black, and she prefers a polished look. She's afraid of fire. She is currently a B student and is working on the Admired Icon aspiration. She's a member of the Drama Club.

Bella wore her crown to bed the night after Prom. It hadn't been a perfect prom; things could have gone better (i.e., more romantically) with her crush Wolfgang. But any time you're named Prom Queen, that's good and worth savoring the moment as long as possible.

The most exciting thing that happened the week after Prom was going to the ThrifTea store and seeing one of her outfits being worn. True, Bella hadn't expected to see a guy wearing it, and she didn't think pink was a good color for Rohan Elderberry, but she realized that once an outfit was listed on Trendi, it was out of her control.

The second most exciting thing was going to the cafeteria and finding that the cafeteria worker didn't show up that day. The principal was annoyed too.

Mortimer Goth is outgoing and creative. He likes alternative music and has learned to like romance music. Having a housemate who plays it ALL THE TIME will do that. His favorite color is black and his least favorite is yellow. He enjoys dancing, painting, and writing. He likes the hipster, polished, and rocker styles of clothing. He's afraid of fire. An A student, Mortimer has the goal-oriented aspiration. He belongs to the Computer Club.

Mortimer's big moment was the discovery that he enjoys painting. "What does the spider represent?" Molly Prescott asked him when she came to look at his work. "Fear of the future," said Mortimer.

His other big moment was surviving a lightning strike. Luckily he got inside before he could get hit again, no thanks to the Watcher, who didn't even notice.

Eliza Hastings is a materialistic perfectionist, which perhaps is why she's also a chess master, an A student working on the goal-oriented aspiration. She likes S-pop music, the color green, and the preppy style of clothing. She's afraid of fire. Her favorite activities are fitness and painting. She is Captain of the Chess Club and works as a Sim Influencer.

Eliza's weirdest moment this week was having lunch with the principal. She and Geoffrey weren't in trouble; the principal was just trying to get to know the students on a more informal basis.

Another weird moment was going to Career Day. Eliza plans to complain to the School Board about having a known criminal (Jacques Villareal) providing information about his career. Was this a joke?

Hands-down, Eliza's best moment was being named Prom Queen. In fact, Prom was a transcendent, life-changing experience, maybe.

Nancy Landgraab is a materialistic snob who keeps hoping that the decor in the house will eventually meet her standards. She likes pop music and has learned to like classical. Her favorite color is purple, and her favorite styles are polished and preppy. She is an A student and is working on the Drama Llama aspiration. She is afraid of fire.

Nancy is on the cheerleading squad and is gradually improving her routine.

Sadly, even painfully, she's at that level of skill where she's able to attempt difficult moves like a back flip, but not skilled enough to complete them without mishap.

Geoffrey Osteer is outgoing and good. He likes classical music and the colors blue and red (coincidentally the colors of the Copperdale Whomps, whose football team he is on). His preferred styles are basic and preppy, and he dislikes the rocker style. Although his aspiration is goal-oriented, Geoffrey is still a B student. His favorite activities are fitness, handiness, mischief and video gaming. He dislikes dancing. Geoffrey is the only person in the household who is not afraid of fire.

To his disappointment, there was no one at Career Day talking about a career in firefighting. A visiting chef informed him that you could build cooking skill and avoid accidental fires simply by reading cookbooks. Who knew?

Fitness is important to Geoffrey so he enjoys jogging.

Geoffrey's moment of truth came when he grew a beard, and still no one in the house noticed that he had facial hair. He decided to shave everything off.

Bob Pancakes is a cheerful genius. He likes retro music and also likes romance. His favorite color is brown; his favorite style of clothing is basic. Although he likes cooking, he is also afraid of fire, having set himself aflame once. He also enjoys video gaming. He started out with the live fast aspiration but changed to goal-oriented because he dislikes mischief. Bob is an A student, and he switched to Computer Club when he found that being in Scouts wasn't helpful with his aspiration.

Bob's life changed on Love Day when he realized that he had a crush on Eliza. Quickly he made a promposal sign and asked her to go to prom with him.

The two of them took a friendly picture together in the photo booth, Bob having learned from Mortimer that romantic advances could backfire.

After complimenting Eliza on her mighty fine garb (it was Talk Like a Pirate Day), Bob sat down with Eliza for a short chat. "I thought you were involved with Nancy?" Eliza began. "When did the two of you break up?"
"We were never really a couple," said Bob. "She told me she thought I should go into politics because I had the 'common touch,' and that's not something I'm interested in. Actually, my school project on robots has given me some ideas, and I'm planning to go into engineering. But that's not glamourous enough for Nancy, so she's moving on."
Bob hoped that Eliza would say that making robots was glamourous enough for her, but she didn't.

"Care to dance?" he hastily suggested. The dance floor was full so they went out on the terrace. A light rain was falling. They didn't stay long, but it was long enough to be the happiest moment of Bob's life.

A short while later, Bob had another happiest moment of his life -- dancing with Eliza after she'd been named Prom Queen. She was thrilled, and he was thrilled for her. The evening couldn't have been more perfect -- not even for a perfectionist.

4. After the Prom

Eliza went to sleep that night with her crown on.

She also put up the picture of herself and Bob from the photo booth. It was next to the one she had taken at her first prom -- what a difference! Then she had been with someone who didn't particularly want to be with her, but last night she had been a queen in feeling as well as name.

The next morning at breakfast she and Bob agreed that they wanted to keep the magic going.

They went out on a date at Totter Park in Copperdale. From there they walked to the Pier. They both felt a little shy about going on the Tunnel of Love ride, so they opted for the Haunted House. Too late, Bob remembered that he was afraid of the dark.

Embarrassed, he hurried back to the park before Eliza could say anything about his screaming. "I got this for you," he said, handing her a rose.

Eliza was pleased with the rose, so Bob decided to make a move. When she didn't push him away, he figured it was time to take things to the next level.

First kiss.

And yes, she agreed to be his girlfriend. Could life get any better?

That evening Bella decided to throw a party. Bob tried to bake a cake for her, but the stove caught fire again. Even so, she achieved a gold level party, and a pretty good (i.e. expensive) reward. What with the wall mount radio and the phonograph from prom, they didn't really need a big stereo. Bella agreed to sell it to help pay the bills.

Monday afternoon Bob got a phone call that took him completely by surprise. Did he want to graduate early? Absolutely, he said. He immediately applied for scholarships and got a part-time job as a short-order cook (well, table cleaner, but he would work his way up).

On Tuesday, Eliza got the same phone call. She also applied for scholarships and took a job as a store clerk. She immediately began stressing over whether she would get accepted at University.

"Of course you'll be accepted," Bella assured her. "I think it's amazing the way you and Bob have figured out what to do with your lives. You're just so much more mature than the rest of us. I have no idea what I'm going to do."
"Oh, please," said Mortimer, who was in a bad mood. "We're only teenagers. We're not supposed to have our whole lives planned yet."
"Don't mind him," said Bella. "He's just cross because you and Bob got early graduation and he didn't."
"Well, I have been an A student longer than any of you," Mortimer grumbled.

Prom was approaching, and Bella decided that she would give Wolfgang a chance to ask her. She wasn't going to ask him again, but if he -- or anyone -- wanted to go with her, she would say yes. But Wolfgang didn't ask her.

Bella spent all of exam period grousing about it. About everything. Sure she was pretty and popular, but there wasn't anyone who had enough of a crush on her to ask her to prom. And she was the only B student left in the house, now that Geoffrey had gotten an A. And she didn't know that she liked anything except romantic music. And she was just sitting here when she should be taking an exam which she would probably fail. She got up to go use the computer, but an unseen hand pushed her back into her seat. She got up to go workout, but the unseen hand intervened again. Finally Bella took out her exam booklet. She answered 2 questions before the bell rang.

"It was terrible," she told Bob and Mortimer while they were playing chess. "I realized there's nothing I enjoy doing except maybe helping old people during beach clean-up. And I can't make any money doing volunteer work."
"You'll figure it out," Bob said consolingly.
"You just need to do your homework," said Mortimer. "You can't get an A just by looking pretty."
"Thanks Dad," Bella said crossly.

That evening, Eliza enrolled for a distinguished degree in history from the University of Britechester. Her scholarships covered all four of her classes (including an elective in knitting), but she had to stay at home.

Bob signed up for a distinguished degree in physics from Foxbury Institute. He was thrilled that he would learn robotics in one of his classes.

The next day was Prom day. Eliza and Bob both had to work that night, and Bella hadn't been asked by Wolfgang or anyone. Mortimer didn't want to take a chance that he would alienate Sofia further.

But Geoffrey noticed that Nancy was feeling a little blue. She hadn't said much about Bob and Eliza, but you didn't have to be strongly empathetic to figure out that her feelings were a little hurt. "I know it's a common trope," he said to her, "the football star going to Prom with the head cheerleader, but would you like to go with me?"
"Oh yes," said Nancy. "It will give me a chance to show off my designer dress."

Once inside, Geoffrey had a glass of fruit punch while Nancy circulated. He didn't enjoy dancing, but at least he could get a meal here. They had some pretty fancy stuff, not just baked chicken.

Nancy came over and suggested that they get their picture taken in the photo booth. At which point Geoffrey had a revelation. Nancy was stunning. She was the most gorgeous girl there, the most gorgeous girl anywhere, and that included Bella Bachelor.

The rest of Prom passed as in a dream. He was named Prom Jester, but Nancy was Prom Queen.

And even though Geoffrey disliked dancing, he took a turn around the floor with her. "You were the only possible choice," he told her. "No one else even comes close."

That night Nancy slept in her crown.

And Geoffrey kept on his jester's cap, dreaming that the bells jingled in time with the music that he and Nancy had danced to.

5. And Then There was One (Left in High School, that is)

Nancy and Mortimer were both doing so well at school that they were offered early graduation, after Monday's class.

Nancy immediately took a job as a barista, but Mortimer decided that he could make more money from painting. Since he's produced a couple of masterpieces that have sold for more than 2000 simoleons each, that was a good decision. Mortimer is majoring in Language and Literature and is taking an elective on Selvadoradian Culture, while Nancy is majoring in Art History.

Meanwhile, lovebirds Bob and Eliza were busy with homework and their jobs.

Eliza was taking an elective in knitting.

Bob was working on his degree in physics.

Every so often they would take a break from their studies and discuss the future. At the end of their first term, Bob's A pluses and A minuses averaged out to an A. Eliza's only A was in knitting, and she resolved to work harder. On the other hand, she did reach the top of the retail sales job, while Bob was still just a fry cook.

Bob put his expertise to work one morning to fix eggs and toast for everyone, but Mortimer's attempt at cooking destroyed the stove again.

Near the end of the week, Bella was given the option of early graduation, which she took. She immediately applied to university, although she had no idea what to major in. That left Geoffrey as the only one still in high school.

Geoffrey decided to stay in high school and complete his goal-oriented aspiration. Nancy helped him improve on his fitness and football throwing.

Geoffrey also started live-streaming the game Crypt Keeper.

He invited Nancy to the prom again, and this time, she voted for him to be Prom King.

But his happiest moment came when Nancy told him that she had a crush on him.

They went through the Tunnel of Love after prom, but someone tossed them an avocado in the dark, which was a bit weird.

Their relationship survived the attempt at avo-cuddling, however, and Geoffrey and Nancy are now boyfriend and girlfriend.

But our first lovebirds are not doing so well. A few days ago, Mortimer developed a crush on Eliza.
