You could always try one of the challenges. You are not allowed to use cheats. You may want to, but, you will also want to follow the rules because there is no point in registering your score if you know you didn't earn it. Take on a short challenge, some of them are fun to do. Once you learn how to play without cheating, you will find the game is more fun, and more challenging. There are many ways to make things easier for yourself, such as the moodlet manager, so plan your way to getting the benefits you want quickly.
For example, If I want the moodlet manager as fast as possible, I would make my lifetime wish something easy to achieve. (example: menu maven or swimming in cash. - There are many simple, non-cheating ways to make lots of money very quickly, reading cookbooks doesn't take long either). Part of the fun of this game is working out what gets you to whatever goal you have set as quickly as possible, without cheating. Depending on which EP's you have, you can make a million in just a few sim days if you know how.
I usually play a single sim, however, I did the Baby Boomer Challenge early this year and enjoyed constantly having a house full. Obviously, no cheating. It did get hectic. but, it was fun - except the night when the burglar called and I had to send the kids to school late the next day.
I would also suggest using a small town map such as SV initially as then you won't be tempted to use the teleport cheat.
