Not really sure what to say. I'm happy for Kahlee and I grinned at the ghostly burglar. *likes update*

Chapter 7 – Summer’s End.

With a roof over her head and the ability to use any of the facilities on the island, Kahlee concentrated on her gardening much more seriously. It was now her job, and still her only source of income. One thing she did find, was with all the plants she had, it took a full day to harvest and weed all of them. She would have to alter her routine a little. Now she actually had an address, she could finally receive mail too!

Kahlee: “Love letters? Huh… didn’t think I’d made that much of an impression on people.”

That was pretty much the highlight of her day. Kahlee spent the entire time in her greenhouse, collecting the harvest, replanting any of her plants that were now barren and weeding any left. By that point, it was late evening, so she just had something to eat, threw some laundry on, relaxed with a nice bubble bath and then went to bed. The next day was going to be a relaxation day, so Kahlee got up, slapped her tabcast on to brush up her cooking skills, grabbed some breakfast and then went straight to the grocers to sell her produce again.

Shopkeeper: “Well, hello again. Another good bundle I see?”
Kahlee: “Yep! That greenhouse has pretty much paid for itself.”
Shopkeeper: “Any luck with that cheese?”
Kahlee: “Well… it’s sprouted. I’m really not sure what to expect with that.”
Shopkeeper: “I’m sure you’ll crack it.”

Once she got home, the young woman decided to spend a little time outside. She remembered that she’d managed to cast a few spells last year, so maybe playing with her magic a little would be a good idea. She might pick up a new trick or two… so that’s what she did.

Living on an island had its downsides, and one of those was the lack of contact with… well… anyone. Surprisingly, the online connection was very good though, which meant Kahlee could use the computer in her bedroom to chat to people whenever she wanted, so that’s what she did.

That went on until late evening, when she grabbed a bath and went to bed. With her new routine in place, the next day was harvest day. The young witch was finding that tabcast function quite useful, as it allowed her to listen to cooking tips while she spent all day picking the produce from her plants.

That took up all of the day, so visiting the grocers to sell it all was delayed until the next day.

Shopkeeper: “By the watcher! What are you feeding your plants?”
Kahlee: “Nothing unusual.”
Shopkeeper: “Then how are you getting so many? And the quality is amazing!”
Kahlee: “You know… I think they just like me.”

Retreating back to her little home, Kahlee decided to play some games on her MultiTab…

…and chat with a friend.

Kahlee: “Hello?”
Gabrielle: “Hey there, stranger! How’ve you been?”
Kahlee: “Oh, hey Gabrielle. I’m surviving… busy mostly. You have no idea how much time that garden takes, you?”
Gabrielle: “Oh, I can’t complain. You should get out more! Seems like you spend more time on that garden than with people.”
Kahlee: “Well… it is my job now… and it paid for my house…”
Gabrielle: “That’s beside the point! Go and socialize.”
Kahlee: “It’s leisure day soon, isn’t it?”
Gabrielle: “Yep.”
Kahlee: “I think I’ll go to the festival…”

Once the phone call was done, Kahlee went outside to work on her magic some more, which actually paid off as she discovered a couple more spells.

After that, it was back to bed… which was probably for the best. In the very early hours of the morning, she had a bit of a helping hand.

Burglar: “Maybe this will prove I’m sorry…”

…resulting in a very confused Kahlee.

Kahlee: “Hang on… I didn’t put all this in here. Where did it come from?! And why are there less leftovers than last night?!”

Unfortunately for Kahlee, the washing machine had decided it’d had enough from her repeated loads of laundry. In honesty, she was still getting used to the novelty factor of actually being able to wash her own clothes. She grabbed a screwdriver and started fixing it straight away.

After that, it was the usual routine. Harvest the garden, replant anything dead, weed whatever was left and then off to bed. The next day was Leisure Day, and she had promised herself that she’d get out and about. First stop? The bath!

Then she put on the cooking tabcast, fully aware that she had reached the last of the lessons. This would master her cooking skill so she’d be able to cook absolutely anything, provided she had the recipe, of course. On her way out, she noticed the cheese plants were ready for harvest, so she decided to grab them.

Kahlee: “I can’t believe this actually worked…”

Then she swung by the grocery store to drop off her produce, followed by the consignment store to see if they had anything interesting.

Unfortunately not, but Kahlee intended to go back again later. Next was a trip to the festival, where she discovered that she was actually really bad at skating…

…then home for a power nap. She wanted to go deathfish hunting tonight.

At first, Kahlee got the feeling they really didn’t want to bite, and made a note to buy the book telling her what bait she needed.

But her persistence eventually paid off!

That was the first of two she managed to catch before going home to sleep again. Her next day was of the more boring type: Get up, shower, breakfast, harvest, replant everything, weed the garden then back to bed. Being a gardener was a lot harder than she realised, especially with the amount of plants she had! Kahlee figured she was going to have to see if she could employ some help or something at this rate.

Since the next day was her day off, she planned to do nothing. Of course, fate had different ideas, and she noticed a special seed on the corner of her island, along with some other normal seeds.

Of course, she wanted to know what it was, and planted it immediately.

Next, another trip to the grocers to drop off her produce. That earned her enough cash to be ‘promoted’ as far as the city were concerned. They also had a trophy for her, which Kahlee collected from city hall and then displayed proudly in her bedroom.

As for the final half of the day? She cast the Conversion Ritual on some of those spare seeds. One turned into a nice piece of silver.

The rest turned into nice plantables that actually made good fertilizer, so she used them on the special and rare plants she had in her garden. At least they were useful in some way. When she finally went to bed, Kahlee was fairly content and pleased. It was the end of summer and Autumn was now setting in.

Thank the watcher for that greenhouse!

Wait, Deathfish, Cooking Skill, and Special Seeds. It sounds like Khalee's making ambrosia. It doesn't help that I saw your post on the board for funny stuff this morning. So why would Khalee want ambrosia? She can't remember her immortality!

Maybe Kahlee could get herself a green baby dragon to save some time with the harvesting.  Not that I want her to have lots of free time, particularly now that she can cook ambrosia and is practising her spell casting  ;)

She actually popped a wish to "Catch a Deathfish" when she hit level 10 fishing, so I figured I'd let her.

Then she found 2 special seeds while I was running around. Funny thing is, when I picked them up, she popped 2 more wishes.

1) Grow a Life Plant
2) Grow a Perfect Life Plant

AND she's popped wishes to Learn Ambrosia and Prepare Ambrosia... O.o

Chapter 8 – Life Begins Again.

The start of Autumn brought with it another strange occurrence, or at least a strange one for Kahlee. Her spiritual “helper” was busy in the garden again, trying to help cut down the time she spent out there.

Aside from that, most of Kahlee’s day was pretty normal. She was very surprised at finding more random fruit in her fridge… and part of her spaghetti missing, but she just went about harvesting her plants, weeding them and making sure everything was generally alright. While doing this, she had a tabcast on to help with her charisma skill, since she actually had time to go out and visit people now. After a good sleep, Kahlee grabbed a shower and then went off to sell her produce. Upon arriving home, she got a phone call from one of her friends.

Kahlee: “Hello?”
Akoni: “Hey, it’s just me.”
Kahlee: “Hey Akoni. How’s things?”
Akoni: “This living alone is getting boring, but otherwise fine… wait… what’s that noise?”
Kahlee: “…the sink.”
Akoni: “Need a hand fixing it?”
Kahlee: “Nah, I’m good. I’ve gotten pretty handy with a wrench.”
Akoni: “Ahhhh, alright. Are you going to this party later?”
Kahlee: “Haven’t been invited to one… but since today is my day off, I might crash it if I can find it.”

The invite turned up fairly quickly after that.

Kahlee: “A party at Gabrielle’s? That must be what Akoni was talking about! I am so there.”

It was a nice way to end the day, a party at a friends house, meeting old friends and making new ones. Almost as soon as she walked in, Kahlee was jumped by Gabrielle.

Gabrielle: “You came!”
Kahlee: “Well, you did tell me I needed to get out more.”
Gabrielle: “I’m still surprised you came. I know what you’re like for working on your garden.”
Kahlee: “Ah, today is my day off. I work on the garden every other day now.”

The two chatted for a while and generally caught up on their lives, then it was time to mingle. For once, Kahlee found herself approached by a somewhat attractive man. Normally it was the other way around.

Matteo: “Good evening.”
Kahlee: “Hi there. And you are?”
Matteo: “Matteo… and you?”
Kahlee: “Kahlee. Nice to meet you.”
Matteo: “Likewise. So, what do you do?”
Kahlee: “I’m a gardener. What about you?”
Matteo: “Night work.”
Kahlee: “…night work, huh?”
Matteo: “That’s right.”
Kahlee: “Would this be the ‘sneak around and pilfer stuff’ type of night work?”
Matteo: “Uh…”
Kahlee: “Well, if it is, don’t try your luck on my island.”
Matteo: “…why’s that?”
Kahlee: “The last burglar who tried is now in an urn.”

Such a charmer, but despite that they actually got on reasonably well, and Kahlee went back home with a new friend that evening. The next day was work day, so the young witch just spent most of the day in her greenhouse harvesting everything, then grabbed a shower and chatted with a random person on her computer, followed by some sleep. In the morning, her little helper came back.

Burglar: “I wonder if she’s worked out what’s going on yet…”

Kahlee: “What the… there’s more banana’s in my fridge! And where has that spaghetti gone?! …hang on…”

Since today was selling day, Kahlee intended to go straight to the grocers, but she spotted something in her garden which needed to be investigated.

Kahlee: “So that’s what this plant was! That gives me an idea…”

After selling up her stuff, a quick trip to the bookstore was in order, and then she came home to read her new purchase.

Kahlee: “Huh… so that’s how you make it… and that’s what it does. Interesting.”

Since the garden had been partially harvested already, that meant Kahlee had a lot of free time the next day. She’d managed to gain a little bit more skill with her magic after using the conversion ritual on the various different seeds that she’d found, which meant she could now use her magic and her handiness skill to upgrade various different items. Of course, the first thing she upgraded was her sprinklers.

That night, she prepared a rather special meal and left it in her fridge.

She didn’t have to wait long for the results. Her little helper was quite persistent in lingering around the place.

Burglar: “Oooh. This looks good. I think I’ll grab this.”

Burglar: “That was lovely… wait… what’s happening?!”
Kahlee: “AHA! I thought it was you!”
Burglar: “…uh oh.”
Kahlee: “Sit down.”
Burglar: “…yes ma’am…”

Kahlee: “So… been playing around in my garden, have we?”
Burglar: “…yes.”
Kahlee: “Why?”
Burglar: “I wanted to help.”
Kahlee: “And why did you want to help?”
Burglar: “Being dead gives you time to think, and I felt bad for stealing your tent.”
Kahlee: “I never expected to hear that…”
Burglar: “…so if you thought it was me… why did you make that meal?”
Kahlee: “Everyone deserves a second chance.”
Burglar: “…not much of a second chance.”
Kahlee: “Why do you say that?”
Burglar: “I died! I have no money, no job, no house and no friends.”
Kahlee: “Sound familiar?”
Burglar: “…sounds like you when you were dumped here…”
Kahlee: “Yep. So I’ll make you a deal.”
Burglar: “…what?”
Kahlee: “First, what’s your name?”
Burglar: “…Nevada.”
Kahlee: “Ok Nevada, I’m Kahlee. The deal is this. You can live here, but you have to help out in the garden. You’ll be responsible for harvesting until you get some skill, then you’ll be helping with the weeding too. We work on a day on, day off schedule. What you do in your free time is up to you, but I expect you in the garden on the specified days.”
Nevada: “Wait… what’s the catch?”
Kahlee: “Like I said, everyone deserves a second chance. I was given one, now I’m giving you one. Don’t disappoint me.”
Nevada: “…ok. You have a deal.”

And so that’s what they did. The day of Nevada’s resurrection was one of Kahlee’s work days. She passed the young woman her MultiTab so she could start learning gardening instantly, and then they both went out to the greenhouse. For the most part, this agreement worked very well for both women.

The evening soon arrived, and it was time for their meal and a quick chat.

Kahlee: “So… what happened to you?”
Nevada: “Huh?”
Kahlee: “Well, you don’t look like you’re very far out of your teen years… what happened?”
Nevada: “Oh. Mom died when I was young, so it was just me and my Dad. He… got involved with the wrong crowd.”
Kahlee: “He was a criminal too?”
Nevada: “Actually, he was a henchman. Their life expectancy isn’t exactly great, but he hoped to get promoted before anything bad happened.”
Kahlee: “I’m guessing that didn’t happen.”
Nevada: “Nope. So I had to make money somehow… stealing seemed the best option at the time.”
Kahlee: “Well, you don’t need to do that now. We’ll get you back on your feet.”
Nevada: “…thanks…”

And while the two women slept, someone else was less than pleased at this new situation.

I've been following this story as a silent reader, and I have to say, I'm loving how this is turning out! Your writing is captivating, and this chapter is no different- what a plot twist! Still, I'm very glad for Kahlee, and poor Nevada- at least she's gotten a second chance for redemption herself.

Thank you for this lovely update, and I can't wait to see what else you have in store!

Thank you, everyone. :D

I have to admit, I'm surprised and pleased that the writing style isn't boring or irritating. I'm still trying to find my feet with that a little. I've actually had this update sitting on my laptop for a while, but Phoebe/Alyssia and Anna needed updates first.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should update Phoebe/Alyssia or Anna... I've already got material for one of them.

That was quite a surprise that Kahlee resurrected Nevada.  It was very nice of Kahlee to do something like that.  Can't wait to see what Grim has in store for both girls now  :D

That last line. *giggles* So yay Khalee, go be awesome and be nice unlike your past self! I don't know why, but I've started to think of Nevada as Khalee's apprentice. Oh, and nice reason for the ambrosia.

Ooooohhhh... Very interesting! Really curious to see where this goes.

What has she done to deserve this? Loved that shot where she was wailing. Paints her as an over-the-top dramatic sim. ^_^

I have to agree usually I'm not into stories but this sounds pretty interesting.
